Hi, we are a band that are heavily influenced by the kinks! If you could please spare 2 seconds to listen to a band that are still trying to play real music then check us out at our channel.
I know this band since... I don't know, EVER , .. and I'm very surprised , looking at all the comments that people knows it because of How I Met Your Mother. Very strange, because the kinks are just AMAAAAZING !!!!( And I am French so everybody knows them, no ? ) I love this song ! It's one of my crazy friend who listen it all the time, it just makes me happy :) Victoooria ♥
its pretty sad people come to know this song from how i met your mother.. and yet although i used to love it like most of kinks stuff, i was reminded of it from himym..cool story bro
I saw the Kinks four times between '75 and '79 in Kansas City. Johnny Cougar, Blondie and Cheap Trick were among the opening acts.
I also saw The Who twice and the Stones once in that time. The reason I love The Kinks? They didn't punch the clock and give some rote performance. As you can see from the vid, Ray, Dave and the rest of the band always wanted to make sure you had a great time.
Ray is singing the Banana Boat Song but Mercury also borrowed the "Weigh-o" call and answer from Jamican Mento Folk, a precursor of Reggae and Ska. The "Weigh-o" call is still used at the end of the market day in some parts of Kingston, Jamaica, mostly for the tourists benefit. It essentially means "get your shit together and get done", be it your working day or a concert.
Great Song / God Save the Kinks! There will only ever be one Ray Davies / and no substitutes will do / he has the most distinctive voIce / there is such a purity in it / the tone / its a beautiful english boy with a touch of the bad english boy! Just love him to pieces / Rosie. Mermaid@rincess9
I saw ray maybe 15 times over 40 years and on those nights when the planets aligned, Ray and the Kinks were the greatest band performance in the world. Ever.
And two of those beyond belief performances were Schoolboys and Storyteller.
This looks like one of those nights. My friend George Arthur saw Preservation in New York and said it was even better than Schoolboys. Those were the days my friend, we thought they would never end... Never underestimate Ray and his ability to create...
I had the great pleasure of seeing The Kinks in 76, 80, and 83. They are the most under rated band in rock history. The 67 album, "Something Else" is the equal of Sgt. Peppers. "The Village Green Preservation Society" is even better. Ray Davies is a true genius. His observations of English society are literary and soulful. I started going to Kinks shows in the '60s and they were so fucking good....great band from a great era of music..wish they could carrry on forever..may the sun never set
I was there -My father was a cop in Providence - a sergeant and my gilfriend at the time got to go backstage as my father had the "detail." A group of great guys who were super rockers. They weren't much for publicity stunts and outrageous behavior like the Stones so their "acclaim" factor suffered but their music speaks for itself . Thank you for this wonderful post and man did it bring back some precious memories of a time when great was great, good was good and crap was crap (read rap) .

@BerkeleyMews7 I WAS at this show half my life ago. It was fantastic. See also All Day and All of the Night and Where Have All the Good Times Gone. (BTW, Flock of Seagulls opened!)
Actually, they never had an official farewell tour, and they toured for about 15 years after you saw them in SB...I should know, I saw them in Berkeley at the Greek Theater in 1981, Cow Palace in SF in 1983. San Diego in 1985 at SDSU, 1986 at Golden Hall in SD and 1988 in Berkeley Community Theater.
I caught the Greek Theater show too...Ray said there's a funny smell out there..when people smoked at the shows. Also caught them July 1978 at Seattle Memorial Stadium..much better than the headlining Beach Boys;Seattle Coliseum 1983:Paramount Theater summer 1985.
Dave Davies is a great unheralded guitarist.Did he heal from the stroke?I hear Ray has a superb solo band.Kinks are very brilliant:)
@elpolarbear haha I remember that Greek show in Berkeley...Ray: "I smell drugs out there!", that was Sept '81, with Joe Ely opening, I remember people tossing toilet paper from above, they were on fire that night, as usual
@kinksboss1 Ah yes,Joe Ely and that line.1981 also brought us Ozzy's first tour with Randy Rhoads..ok,another thread.he was at Day on the Green July 4,1981.OMG,the memories come flooding back.I recall Ray Davies had a solo tour 3 years ago.
dad seen em live in detroit in tha 70s said the best party hes ver seen and he showed me this tun full blast . love the gutair luv tha kinks . fighting drugs drama they happen.
On of the mysteries of my career as a rock and roll fan, having seen the Stones and the Who playing before stadium crowds dozens of times, is why haven't the Kinks haven't enjoyed the same kind of success? They sure as hell have the material and the chops to have earned it...
Never seen that before! How cool was that? Would love to have seen them live, think I really missed an ACT!!! Bless our Ray :) Thanks for sharing this
The Monkees were the Madonnas of the 60s. Madonna presents spectacles and the spectacle is more importante than the music. Rap is reciting poetry to a musical background. But in rock all that matters is the music and that its so loud the bass vibrates your body. The Stones - CRANK IT UP!!!!!!!
interesting that it took Chuck Berry, Nina Simone, Muddy Waters, Ella Fitzgerald, Little Richard, Billy Holiday, Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson were Rap without outside interventions. They were co-opted and a newer strain of bold stinging rhythms had to be concocted. Thus spoke RAP-Hip Hop making and breaking the distance and barriers. The Kinks, The Beatles, The Stones, Pearl Jam, Patti Smith, The Clash they all "swore" that they learned their Rap from the Kings and Queens of American music!
rap is completely shit and madonna is a fn idiot. Kinks who beatles the hollies troggs they could put together a record without swearing or making lewd references. ol madge can suck my ****
what has HIMYM got to do with the Kinks? I genuinely want to know btw as I don't watch it (even tho a big fan of Segal)

On of the mysteries of my career as a rock and roll fan, having seen the Stones and the Who playing before stadium crowds dozens of times, is why haven't the Kinks haven't enjoyed the same kind of success? They sure as hell have the material and the chops to have earned it...

The weren't around as long and too much in fighting and drugs and drama that got in the way.
Maybe poor management.

One of my fav Kinks songs, it's got a great rhythym and has real drive. It's kind of a proto-punk song, except there's no attitude or rebellion. :)

Stop arguing about good / bad music about Madonna / Rappers etc. -----
just watch Dave`s gorgeous smile at 2:21
He enjoys making music -- that`s the point. .... you can feel it and hear it.

interesting that it took Chuck Berry, Nina Simone, Muddy Waters, Ella Fitzgerald, Little Richard, Billy Holiday, Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson were Rap without outside interventions.
