Who is the actor for the extremely creepy old man? He is a magnificent actor, to be able to create feelings of disgust and fear the instant his character speaks. (Is awesome, methinks :D
@MrAbeLink He is a great actor and you make a good point although I can't help thinking he (and or the directors) overdid the creep factor jusssst a little bit. He wasnt initially nearly so revolting in the beginning of the original story haha. Somehow he makes his thinly veiled villainy a little too apparent. Any audience seeing this the first time, having no other knowledge of the story, would know immediately he is being deceptive and has something crooked in mind. haha
we watched this in school, and that old man FREAKED US ALL OUT. we thought that at the end then the crime would be rape and murder or something. it was like, all the girls were feeling nervous and slightly violated, and the guys were feeling awkward.
@halley42 Oh god yeah, I felt raped in the ear whenever he said anything. He made everything sound like a disgusting proposition. Can you imagine talking to him? "I'd like you to recite..your three..times..table."
I wonder if his conscience as a 'chivolrous opponent' is pricking him for letting her go into a situation which he doesn't have enough data to certify as dangerous, but which he has definite misgivings about. Judging by his facial expression at 6:58 he feels uneasy about the fact that, though they can't stop her, they have made her feel reassured and at ease about taking the post.
Weird how Sherlock plays with Violet's hair, guides her out the door and then lays bare in front of Watson a confession worded like that about his misgivings. He is showing an unusual amount of interest and concern for her. He clearly doesn't fancy her any more than he does anyone else, but I can't make head or tail of why he acts that way.
@catherinespark According to William S. Baring-Gould, a Holmesian scholar, Holmes had a soft spot for women named Violet because that was his mother's name.
@RayquazaTex That's true. After all, he found a black pearl in a statue of Napoleon, and a blue carbuncle in a goose. Maybe he thought her future employer wanted to cut off her hair because something was hidden in it - a read garnet perhaps! Just joking...and I agree, that is probably the reason. :)
@yukifan23 I discovered Joss Ackland through listening to his reading of The Screwtape Letters audio-book. Fantastic. I also saw him in a performance on DVD of Shakespeare's Coriolanus.

Joss Ackland is compelling here, but I agree he overdid the creepiness making it obvious from the off that he was the villain.

all my hair fell out when I was 13. If I had hair like that, there's no way I'd part with it. Listen to Holmes, for God's sake.

@catherinespark I assume he did that with her hair to examine it more closely, as apparently it's of some importance to her future employer.
