@Harald136 "Neo Caliban Grides". Full version of this early incarnation (later to be done more free-jazz style on Elton Dean's first solo album) is released on "Grides" (2006, Cuneiform).
Ian Anderson is so right about music now - it really isn't cool to be either remotely 'rocking' onstage or play a solo: if you move around a bit or 'get into it' that's apparently 'old hat' or embarrassing and if you want to play something emotive that's 'unnecessary'.
Carl Palmer is an amazing drummer, and whom I to disagree with him? But I think time keeping is very important. Once you get keeping time down, you can develop your style
It's weird how music is split into different categories nowadays - but one thing is for sure - bands like Yes and Genesis drew the same crowds as Sabbath and Zeppelin at the time - and the same people would not have crossed the road to see Soft Machine, Egg or Hatfield and the North - not in Newcastle anyway - I saw all three bands play to a lukewarm response - whereas the others were treated like heroes.
@NeilThompson30 totally agree. while sabbath became sth different I'd agree I'd have seen them as prog early on at least. but yeah - i'd have happily gone to see yes or genesis or led zep (only in fact saw genesis, but was into them all). but i was v young when they were about ... and soft machine were never so big...I was never really aware of them. in a similar way i remember a few people went to see gentle giant, for example, but most people, self included , hadn't really head their stuff.
Wouldn't Bowie be considered somewhat progressive during this time? Man Who Sold the World didn't have the technical skill of Yes or Genesis but it was definitely kind of prog, as was a lot of his later work
It's called "Hoedown (Taken from 'Rodeo')" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. You might recognize the melody from the "Beef: It's What's for Dinner" campaign.
Is that Dave Mustaine, playing drums at 6:14?!

That's right. Music ain't music without 15 minute guitar solos, knives in keyboards and compound time signatures. Woot! Excess!

ELP surprised me when I first heard them because I didn't know there could be something on par or even better than king crimson
