**NONE OF THIS SPY STUFF IS NECESSARY. HERE ARE THE OPTIONS**

a. keep the HDD. put it in another machine and continue using it as before.

b. If it's large size (3.5 inch) and you are moving to a laptop/netbook, just get a powered HDD enclosure for 5 bucks and continue using it.

c. If your identity/info are so special: remove the driver board (attached to the underside of the HDD), snap it in two and dispose of it carefully. Many days later, dispose the HDD carefully.

I run dban once on autonuke, install a copy of xp and then do updates to it, then go back to dban and use dod. That way if somehow they can recover anything, its just data from the new copy of xp, not any of my data.

The only real way is breaking the HDD. There always will be tools that can recover the data no matter how many removal passes you do.. DOD.. Gutmann.. its always going to be recoverable by some program in the future.

You have to make sure the wipe algorithm is robust and through. Most wipe programs have such algorithms. (government protocols are generally good for this)

There is dd with linux, example "sudo dd if=/dev/sdx1 of=/dev/zero" will whipe the drive with zeros. There is a challenge for 10,000 to recover a drive whiped with zeros and this challenge hasen't been answered but DBAN works as well. What ever works for you :)

You wrote over the data 7 times? That's a bit extreme! It is enough just to overwrite it 3 times. Overwriting it 3 times makes the data irrecoverable. You don't need to do anymore than that.

He is a professional at computer examination and forensics so I will pretty much take for granted most of the stuff he tells me and from what I've seen through his work. He says up to 3 overwrites is recoverable so I believe him if he has the ability to sniff and detect data that has been overwritten up to 3 times.

Anyone have any ideas of how to fix a partition that Ubuntu reports as having I/O errors.

I used CHKDSK /R and it reports no faults but because Ubuntu believes the partition is damage load time is significantly increased and Ubuntu does not display the drive location when loaded from a live cd.

I am curent intsalling Ubuntu on a different partition.
