Call it what you may. Down Syndrome kids will always be dependent on someone. Only thing worse is an Autisic child because most of them never progress beyond the toddler stage in mentality. I have personally seen many Autistic children go on to be extremely successful with support and interventions. They are only a ball and chain if you don't love your own child. If you knew Autism, many of them are actually brilliant. The disability affects your ability to socialize and communicate. My sister has down syndrome. She is not a burden on anyone. She is as dependent as a 17 year old. She has a job and she can take care of herself. The only burden is her needing a ride to work.

I know there are different degrees of Downs and Austism, but most of the autistic kids I've been around have been very low functioning. We have a family friend who has a grandson who is 21 but acts like he's 2. He lives at home, can't talk, can't use a fork/spoon, craps himself and strews it down the hallway and is a nightmare to deal with. My Mom has been around this kid and thinks it's horrible that his parents are strapped w/him. His parents' marriage has suffered greatly because he's there.

How about HAVING the special needs child, then actually taking care of the SPECIAL NEEDS child, they are called SPECIAL NEEDS children because they have SPECIAL NEEDS. The tabloid magazine cover photos show him "asleep" as well. What questions exactly should we wish to ask about this 5 month old with Downs Syndrome? Cindy McCain is a compassionate individual (whether she is out of touch because of her wealth or not), who has given birth to and raised children of her own.
