I was born and raised in the 'commission' area of Waterloo - I lived in the 'Captain Cook' flats. A year ago I did my own tour after many years. No much had changed. Most vacant land had been appropriated for private residential apartment blocks. an interestiing mix of working and middle class now. Still retains the charm and memories for me. Unfortunately though, I wasn't able to ride the lifts in blocks - ah, that brings back memories!

How much rent do the people living in the block pay? I earn the minimum wage, try to hold on to 2 casual job (38+ hours a week), go to uni (14 hours a week + assignments) and look after my pregnant girlfriend and pay taxes. The only govt benefit we will get is the baby bonus, which might just cover the cost of a pram, doctors bills and a cot. But still so many people, who live in housing commission don't work and want something for nothing, it doesn't seem fair to me.

Some need housing commission like single parent families, and then there are those with no good reason to be entitled to this accommodation. There are those in housing commission that make money on the side stealing from people, and then when the cops try and arrest them for it (e.g Hickey and Kelly) they throw a hissy fit and riot. Why should I be paying more taxes so that people who don't respect the law and won't work should live in property more expensive than what I can afford?

Sorry your right Hickey was not chased because he stole something he was chased because he had a warrant for his arrest over an assault, a breach of an AVO and drug possession, how dare the police enforce a warrant! Furthermore the Coroner found that the police were not chasing Hickey when he came off his bike. Other evidence suggests that Hickey often rode his bike recklessly. Anyway if the police were chasing Hickey he had a WARRANT for assault. If someone had assaulted you would you expect the police to arrest them or not? (1) The cops did not kill him, he killed himself because he either ran from them or was riding his bike recklessly like he had on other occasions. What happened to Hickey was a tragic accident! (2) He was not chased there were two caged vehicles in the area looking for a violent bag snatcher had earlier that morning had knocked an old woman to the ground. One had stopped and checked Hicky out, that is all. No lights and series were put on, no pursuit or following took place. Go through the evidence submitted in the Inquiry and educate yourself! I know about the Palm Island case. Those injuries received were from the cop jumping on the man who died when he tried to restrain him. You are right about a few things

1.Cops have a duty of care to those they arrest. But the cops can't be held responsible for all deaths in custody as long as they take reasonable measures to protect them.

2.Racism does exist, but from my experience Police at least in the areas work don't racist target aboriginals and beat them up for being black. There may be some racist cops but most aren't.

I am willing to admit that Hurley possibly, deliberately killed him but that case which ever way you look at it is a one off, not a police trend. Also the Australian newspaper which has been my main source for this has been campaigning to see that Hurley gets charged and he has been. So I think it is safe to assume that the Australian has publish atleast honest and fair reports if not has been bias against Hurley.
