He didn't use the ending riff because it probably would've taken fucking FOREVER to do it again.... slowly. especially since he spells out every little detail. The whole point of Betcha Can't Play This is to play a (usually) awesome riff, play it again slowly, and let the viewers try to play it themselves. I don't like how he explains it; it takes all the difficulty out of it!!

It doesn't help with coordination, but it does match the guitar. I'm pretty sure it's all cosmetic. Like if he had an all Green guitar with orange inlays, his nails would be green or orange. More likely green because the smaller noticed piece is already orange, and why am I talking about interesting color choices? hahaha

8 is too much to me, but 7 gives you a world of options, like...you can do the heavy stuff seen in more modern metal bands, or you can play in standard and not use that extra string. Or you can incorporate it into what you would play in standard. There's also the extra sweeps, hammer-on arpeggios, slides, etc, that if you're good enough make it more than worthwhile. If not, you might as well just tune down.

I think it was more common 10 years ago than it is today actually. Most newer bands just detune and forget about the top string choices, usually it goes to B standard or lower too, so basically a 7 string without the 7th string... Detuning replaced the 7 string because solos are less common in todays music and it's a lot cheaper. Still there are great bands who know how to use all 6 and then get a 7 because of it, so yeah...exceptions to the rule...
