If music is "haram" then why has Yusuf Islam chosen to use his gift to create songs to teach children about Islam, the Qur'an and Hadith? Why would Allah give you a gift and instruct you NOT to use it? That makes no sense.

I think if Napoleon is more accurate, there has always been a happy marriage between hip-hop and Islam. I've witnessed young men influenced by groups like Public Enemy and Malcolm's autobiography convert to Islam and remain very strong. I've seen converts to Islam who were once illiterate want to read more and more. So, I would say that if Allah gives you the gift of music, are you using the gift to uplift? My brother, don't go to the extremes. Islam allows many things and it also prohibits many things. Stick to the permissible and you will be okay. There are loads of halaal food to eat and drink, playing sports is permissible as long as you dress properly and pray on time and in congregation. Why watch movies when you can read books that are way more educational etc? You can listen to the Qur'an as much as you like, and you sit and read and hang out with your Muslim brothers. There are lots to do.

Do you know Arabic? It is really beneficial to learn Arabic. Wallahee, many of the brothers that know Arabic - you never see them bore themselves out, but rather they have access to enormous amounts of knowledge and there is always something to read and entertain oneself with. I myself am trying to learn the language, and in sha' Allah in the future I will be able to benefit from it. Learning Arabic is obligatory for Muslims, our whole religion is in Arabic.
