  • It's amazing to know that some people still listen to Ms. Hopkin's "Kew Gardens" and "Fields Of St. Etienne" so seriously after all these years, obviously those are very sophisticated and sentimental fans, I'm so proud to be a great fan of Ms. Hopkin from the beginning of her career...

  • Mary's new CD was released this week "You Look Familiar" you can obtain it via her official website maryhopkinDOTcom

She is sounding better than ever.

    all the best

    Pat

  • I heared about it alot...very beautiful

  • I heared about alot...very beautiful

  • The lyrics after---"The sun was warm, across the lawns---Sented---blended, He saw her linger and with her finger"---Etc;

  • Wonderful track from a wonderful singer. I have the very rare 2Cd "Six lands of fantasy" from her!

  • Does anyone know for certain what the lyrics are in the 2nd verse after 'The sun was warm, across the lawn....'?

Its 2 almost rhyming words but for all the years I've listened and sung along to Mary and this song, I still can't make out those 2 words =(

I've put the rest of the lyrics onto Super Lyrics but had to ....? for the spot i'd usualy mumble lol

  • Thanks for the interest, I think these are the words, if not try richpat,

The sun was warm across the lawn

    Scented blended

    He saw her linger

And With her finger open up a rose,

    Standing on tip toes

  • Cool, thanks. I'll update the lyrics.

I'll also continue watching this space =)

  • I have been looking it up with my husband and we found one other possibility. A few forums/sites have suggested those words to be 'Fantare, Lantare' and on further investigation believe Fantare is a place name (in Glenkeen, Tipperary). Lantare, as far as I can tell, is a mystical or magical place (non specific). Although it sounds nice, fits the ideals of the song and also sounds like what she sings...

  • Several other sites say 'Scented. blended' and is probably the correct lyrics as written by Ralf Mctell. Sorry for the essay but I felt the need to share my findings lol.

  • very nice!

  • my goodness. this song is absolutely lovely. Marys voice is so flawless here, here there and everywhere.

  • Hello again Pat

No I have not heard that song by G&L.

I agree their songwriting really matched Mary's vocal arrangments. I feel as if I am in dream at the moment. Only recently moved into the 21st century at home with my new Laptop. The great thing is that my mother Emma (who was 89 on 22/4)has really enjoyed the videos on You Tube and has shown great interest whenever I play any song by the lovely MARY HOPKIN. Mary's music was the soundtrack to my early years. Thankyou Pat for your site

  • I love this video really absolutely.

It's happy for you that your mum is still enjoy YouTube by herself! My mum will be 84 on this autumn 17/9. What my sister has had a book "Bulbs" from Royal Kew Gardens greatly surprised me recently.

Enjoy my ch. too. Newest video is Temma Harbour with G/L from Expo gorgeous MH Show 1970.

    Tommy

  • Almost forgotten how beautiful this recording is. Calm and relaxing is how I feel when I listen to the angelic voice of the one and only MARY HOPKIN. There is no one out there to match the outstanding vocal talents of Mary. She is a beautiful lady with a great gift. Thanks Mary for making some great recordings over the years. Welcome back to the music scene where you have sadly been missed. Good luck with the new CD 'Now and Then'. Love and respect to you Mary, Jessica and Pat

  • lovely comment...

I wish she had recorded more Ralph Mctell and Gallagher and Lyle songs...

have you heard "15 summers" by G&L

I would have loved to hear her sing that..

  • Mary Hopkin is one of my favorite singers. She was one of the best song interpreters. Almost all of her recordings were perfectly interpreted. This is one of my favorite Mary Hopkin songs. I could never understand why songwriters did not write songs for Mary to record in the mid 1970's and 1980's which could have been major hits, as her voice was even better when she matured in the 1970's.

  • Yes I agree...

Have you heard her last 3 CD's?

She has her own label now "Mary Hopkin Music" and has been releasing her back catalogue from 1972 to the 1980's all wonderful songs

    All the best

    pat

  • Yes, me too agree with you!

I have "The Bulbs" translated into Japanese one since 10 years ago, that my sister have bought at a department store downtown Ikebukuto/Tokyo.

H.M.M. Kew Gardens send me a letter of their own at every seasons.

Crockus Carpet in the Kew Gardens maybe now full blooming, arn't they? Sakura trees are of full bloomin today in my town 08/4/09. We eats Satsumas (a Japanese orange sweeter than orange, Satuma is UK-English word. We say Satsuma for potetos for sweet poteto.

  • Come back, Mary Hopkin, with your beautiful voice.

  • That's good to know. I was just referring to her desire to stay out of the public eye, that's all!

  • What a wonderfull song.....i just love it....play it over and over again....thanks so much for posting it...!

  • Yes lovely video.Thankyou. She recorded 3 of Ralph McTell's songs, Silver Birch and Weeping Willow is AN ABSOLUTE CRACKER. Ithink Ralph played guitar on all 3

  • Thanks for that! For over 30 years I've been wondering what the pagoda looks like!!

  • I have recognized that the lilly means "water lilly" since watched this video. There are many flowers originated from Japan in the Kew Gardens!

    Great video! Thank you dovecott.

  • Diving off at a tangent to Kew Gardens, does anyone know of any videos of Mary Hopkin recording with Peter Skellern, Julian Lloyd Webber and others, ie. Oasis (1984)?

  • A beautiful quiet song by Ralph McTell, who also wrote Streets of London and 'From Clare to Here'-I think on the Spiral Staircase album. Most of his songs arent even available on compilations, so thanks for posting this nice version and video.

  • In 2006 a box set of Ralph Mctell was released called "the Journey" on Leola Records its wonderful.

  • Yes, this track is on "Spiral Staircase". I like the song and this version is good.

    Annie :D

  • What beautiful angel voice!

What a nice park Kews Garden is!

What a fantastic melody and lyrics!

Mary DOES CEREBRATING a couple of pretty Griffins' "The Days"!

Flowers we can see in this are now blooming nearby in my town.

I surely want to visit this Kews Garden.

Is this broadcasted in the BBC?

  • Mary is the sweetheart forever.

i met her in the live at Suita Expo'70 Japan.

she was very beatiful and attractive.

  • Certainly, it's a beat supposed to be played by nights at your favourite discoteque with all kinds of special effects no matter how raw were those days, Georgio Moroder's wish!

  • Certainly, it's a beat supposed to be played by nights at your favourite discoteque with all kinds of special effects no matter how raw were those days, Georgio Moroder's wish!

  • This has always been one of my favorite Mary Hopkin songs...nice video too.

  • Love the use of recorders in this. I prefer Ralph McTell's rendition, a beautiful song indeed. Does anyone know who the backing vocalists are in the RMcT version, especially the female voice?

  • The vocal accompaniment on Ralph's version comes from a group called "English Tapestry"

  • Thank you for that Glanilyn, I'd almost given up on getting a response.

  • Someone might mention that this terrific song is by Ralph McTell. You might add his name to the tags. Mary covered several of his songs, and sang on some of his albums.

  • Amazing there are no Mary Hopkin albumns in the shops. She could teach most moderns a thing or two about singing!

  • THey may not be in the shops where you live, but they are here in the UK. You can get most of her CD's on Amazon as well she has a new CD out at the moment called "Valentine" its beautiful check out her official website at maryhopkindotcom

  • As far as I know, the official releases I own are "Postcard", "Earth Song/Ocean Song", "Those Were the Days: The Best of Mary Hopkin", and "Y Caneuon Cynnar (The Early Recordings)". I also got "Live in '72" and "Valentine" off her website. Am I missing any others?
