It's amazing that they caught this happening. I was there, 6 feet away from where it hit in the gift shop thats right on the other side of that wall where the bus hit. The glass shelves came shattering to the ground, and the building shook. My first instinct was that it was an earthquake, and everyone just froze for 10 seconds. After that they rushed us out and closed down the shop. I've got some great pictures of it close up, in the wall and of the house it sideswiped on the way down.
I volunteer there. Thank goodness nobody was hurt. People take pics on that spot all day. It ruined the Aquarium sign that's been there since it opened in '84.
I remember going for a jog and running by this accident about 15 minutes after it had happened. I was listening to my Ipod so I thought it had just stalled. Didn't realized it crashed until today, major bummer for that to happen. Good no-one was hurt. Now this will be made into another Speed movie with Keanu Reeves.
Bunyip, what you may not know is that is world renound and AZA approved aquarium is responsible for millions of people choosing to save our oceans - the inhabitants are ambassadors for their species and are treated with the utmost respect in both their living conditions and it their health care - a bus crashing into the outer bay (if successful in breaking the big tank) would have killed the animals in there! Grab a Seafood Watch card if you love the oceans so much - don't rail on the aquarium.
DUDE OMG I WAS THERE standin with my girlfriend and We see a buss Coming Full Speed almost Hit us through the Glass.. But luckly the piller was there...
A lot of that 'hostage' sea life would not survive the accident. Not to mention that not all species kept there would be salt water creatures and would die pretty much within the week
wow, wat a dumass. anoither "activist" who just sits around talking, and not even about important issues. stop being a wanabe animal activist and go do something good for the world if u want respect. bitching about things will get you nowhere
At least I am trying to make a difference for these imprisoned tank creatures. Today, I woke up, made a cupa coffee, went to work, came home, etc. What do these fishes get to look forward to each day? Swimming in their own carp, getting photo flashed every few mins and not having a gallon of privacy.
most of the animals in the aquarium have been rescued because they wouldnt have survived in the wild, and others have been raised there and probably wouldnt survive in the ocean if they were released. on the photo issue, during aquarium hours its light outside so the flashes have almost no affect on them.
most of the animals in there have it BETTER than animals in teh bay because theyre quaranteed something to eat more than twice a day & they dont have to worry about getting eaten
the outer bay exhibit is on the other side of the aquarium...
like 1/2 a block away from where the bus hit.
if the bus had "breached the wall" it probably would have killed visitors in the gift shop before running into and most likely killing the sea otters or going right out the other side into the great tide pool where its oil and gasoline would have leaked right into the bay...
so actaully its a good thing the bus didnt breach that wall...
The crash video actually starts when the buss was half way through the intersection. The first indicator for us that something was wrong was the crashing noises of it hitting street signs, and then when people were literally diving out of the way. Then it came into view. The buss then hit a curb or a building and just about tipped over. By that time I had the phone shooting video it had already corrected it self.
It was an empty, runaway bus. Fortunately no one was hurt. The aquarium remained open, and repairs to the wall are nearly complete.
City officials in Monterey are now requiring bus drivers parked uphill to take extra safety precautions: putting chocks under the wheels of their buses, of course; and possibly relocating bus parking to another street nearby where buses won't be pointed downhill.
Ken Peterson, Communications Director, Monterey Bay Aquarium
I was in the theater when this happened. I heard a big boom and later i walked out and saw a bus in the front of the museum.
