Jewelry Making: Leather and Stone Pendant Jewelry Project

i have a stone that ive kept since i was young.. ive always wanted to make it into necklace but im nervous to drill a hole in it an break it. do you ever make your own holes in stone? the stone i have is a rock of Hawaiian red dirt about 1 inch big.. its a softer type rock. any suggestions on how to drill a hole into it??? or is it not a good idea

@Andy49man49 Well if you love the stone you might not want to risk breaking it. But, if you want to try it, tape the stone under wide masking tape down to a surface you can drill through (scrap wood). Make sure it is stable. Use a sharp and fine drill bit and slowly drill through the stone.  Don't rush yourself, the drill bit can jump across smooth surfaces, so you can go right through the tape. Good luck!
