It sounds alot like something by maybe the Marvelettes?? Anyway, #76 can hardly be described as a "hit". My take on Berry Gordy was if it got to 5 it was a hit, and if it didn't get to 10 you were on probation, unless he was sleeping with you!
EDDIE HOLLAND had several hits for MOTOWN, including this one , then ended his singing and recording career to focus on songwriting with his brother , BRIAN, and LAMONT DOZIER.
Hmmmm, maybe it could have been a bigger hit if the tempo were slowed just a hair, but to me, it still should have been a massive hit for Motown. One of Motown's finest dance records, no doubt about it. There's no way anyone could sit still to this! In fact, to me, this record gives a glimpse as to how Jackie Wilson might have sounded had he signed with Motown (although I do tend to believe now that had Wilson recorded this, it would have been slower in tempo.)
this song is soo great,it should have been a massive hit!I also love the words, its a unique concept for a song and you can't help but get up and dance to this!man, eddie was multi-talented!
Ann Arbors The Rationals do a smokin' cover of this. The Who, The Birds, and The Small Faces covered this song as well. The Brits really dig this one.
I hate the Mötorhead version, but then again I hate Mötorhead.
The High Numbers (not the Who, they did it when they where called The High Numbers), The Birds are good stuff. Don't remember Small Faces having a cover of this one.
I can imagine this record at a slower tempo. But, it doesn't have that great energy and drive. "Leaving Here" was meant to be a STOMPER! It made it to #76 on the charts in early '64.
i prefer it being more uptempo - especially when you get to the call and response bit between the male/female backing singers. eddie's vocal sounds better than some of his other records here too.
Don't listen to the haters. I don't mind a bit of commentary before a video, especially if it's some interesting back story! Thanks.

The Who did a funny version of this song in their early years. It was dreadful, of course, but still pretty swinging.

As far as I can remember, there's also a Motörhead version around. Live, i think. Oh, yeh, a killer version, naturally. :)

When in 1963 was "Leaving Here"? I wonder if it was released during the time of the assasination of President Kennedy?
