The thing is, pretty much every kicked today can probably hit a 63 yarder. However, in Tom Dempsey's time, and even these guys time, a really long kick was probably 55 yards instead of 65. :P Just saying, all the kickers can do it, but they are just catching up to the great guys back in the day.
Wish everyone would shut up about it being easier to kick a field goal in Denver. Who gives a crap? No rules were broken. Jeez. A record is a record is record.
a 63 yard field goal in denver is like 53 anywhere else....remember the monday night game agains the giants when rodney williams punted the ball into the end zone from his own goal line (at least 75 yards in the air)....i also remember another monday night game at mile high where giants' kicker brad daluiso put a kickoff through the goalposts....
You want to see guys that can really kick the piss out of a ball? Check Rugby's Paul Thorburn, Francois Steyn, Dan Carter. All 60 METRES plus and from angles too. Go have a look. Legendary stuff.
@Jiltedin2007, so no records of any kind that include air distance traveled should be kept since we are a Mile High??? So we should have no pro sports because we are a Mile High??? Lame arguements there. And I would LOVE to see you kick a field goal 63 yards with 11 defensive players rushing you......
Anyone can kick a 63 yard Field Goal where the elevation is at sky level. So no, I do not count this as the Longest Field Goal in the NFL. Tom Dempsey's 63 yarder still stands as the NFL's Longest.
That's why Jim Rome always called Denver "Williamsport" when the Rockies would play Baseball there.
@Jiltedin2007 Born and raised in Denver. There is not proven fact that balls travel farther here. As for Jim Rome, he's the biggest wimp of all. Thats why he's on the radio and not on the field.
@Thorpe741 You're right, there is no proven fact that a ball carries farther in Denver than anywhere else. Even though the elevation of "The Mile High City" is over 5,000 feet, it really makes no difference. How about if Jason Elam were to come to San Diego and kick that same 63 yard Field Goal and see if it will actually split the Uprights. That ball would not even make it to the End Zone in San Diego (Where the elevation is Below Sea Level).
@Thorpe741 Oh and by the way, Sebastian Janikowski just also booted a 63 yard Field Goal Monday Night for the Raiders against the Broncos. And where was the game played? DENVER!
I am going to write a letter to the NFL, and I am going to suggest to them that all Long Distance Field Goals made in Denver should not count in their Record Books!
@GrazTheFreak Tom Dempsey kicked his "Record Breaking" Field Goal in 1970 for the New Orleans Saints. The Louisiana Superdome was not built until 1975. The Saints played their games at Tulane Stadium until the Superdome was built. Tom Dempsey kicked that Field Goal outdoors on a Cold November Sunday in New Orleans!
In what "Dome" did Tom Dempsey kick it in Jackass?!
At least we know that the ball does not travel very far in New Orleans.
@Jiltedin2007 Tom Dempsey also had a wooden stump foot. I'm sure his stump gave him much more force on the ball. Elam's and Janikowski's were much more impressive.
@GrazTheFreak And another thing I just discovered, the City of New Orleans happens to be the Lowest City in the United States in terms of elevation at 8 Feet Below Sea Level. It is always like that in the Bayou area. If you got yourself an argument for that, I would be delighted to hear it.
Hey dude, Tom Dempsey's kick was in outdoor Tulane Stadium. The Superdome didn't host a regular season NFL game until the Saints' 1975 season opener against the Bengals.
@Jiltedin2007 Thats like writing to the NFL and saying all of Peyton Manning and Drew Bress records should taken out of the books because they play in a dome atleast 8 times a year.
You cant really knock two of the strongest legged kickers in the game has ever seen just because they happend to break the record in Denver. When one of them played half his games there and the other was a divisional rival who plays there twice a year... and could make a 60 plus yard kick in any stadium!
@Jiltedin2007 They always have perfect conditions. In an outdoor stadium you have to account for heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, and condition of the grass... it's much harder to throw and catch a ball when its -20 with a foot of snow on the field. It's called a home field advantage, deal with it. And those extra 3 yards mean absolutly nothing when your kicking into the wind with snow on the ground.
@TheFunkKnuckle The only way ANYONE can shut me up about these Long Distance Field Goals in Denver is if Sebastian Janikowski could also match that feat against the Chargers in San Diego(Where the elevation is at Sea Level).
@Jiltedin2007 Just because he hasn’t made a record field goal anywhere else doesn’t mean he can’t. In pre game warm-ups Janikowski warms up by kicking 65-70 yard field goals in every stadium! Hell back in 2008 he attempted a 76 yard field goal in Oakland. I think if the coach is willing to let him kick a 76 yarder at sea level he can make a 63 yarder anywhere, and altitude has nothing to do with it!!!
class kick. I'm new to american football (from the UK but love to watch it)... but on the screen at 0:38 it says "this attempt - 58 Yds"... What i'm asking is, is this field goal 58 or does it change to 63 for some reason? someone said something about the place holder :S?
Ummmm...It's not a 63 yard attempt, it was 58 yards. #1 he kicked it from the 48 yard line. #2 if you go to 0:36 into the video there is a graphic that shows it's a 58 yard attempt.
Everyone talks about the thin air here in CO. While that does play a factor, what really makes the difference is how damn dry it is here, just look at what the humidor has done to coors field.
