Holy cow! Did some snobbish Italian just call JENNIFER LARMORE mediocre? Were I you I'd listen to some more of her recordings before calling her mediocre. She is fabulous!
@rumezzo well, I have just watched this after stephanie blythe. If you observe, blythe has a heftier voice, and it should be more difficult to sing this, but she managed to produce fuller sound and more vuluptuous phrasing without moving lots of jaws and lips like larmore. I am not sure about the recording but the piano sounds way louder than her.
larmore is so capable and has the chest voice to handle this aria/ i just had wished she had a full orchestra to support her great singing n not just this piano reduction.
Brava, Jennie! Isn't she a great interpreter of Handel - and of Rossini, Donizetti, etc. But I digress. I'm in love with her, but I haven't gotten a chance yet to see her in person, and perhaps meet her. An opportunity to see her in "La Centerentola" is coming up when she does that opera in Atlanta next month. She is the diva for me in the 2000's, just as Dawn Upshaw and Carol Vaness were in the '90's and Frederica von Stade in the '80's. And I still love them, they'll be happy to know.:-)
indeed! this is one of them arias you've heard over and over again...by many different people...some with big names....but you hear one voice where you say this is what Handel would have wanted. thanks for posting.
She may just lack the very peculiar bartolian quality (Bartoli's voice seems to me the most distinguishable of all mezzos), but isn't Jenni excellent (in her own right)! And what a beauty! Her countenance, the charm emitted whether singing or talking! That makes her doubly as delightful, if my digression be forgiven.
This is the best live recording I have ever heard. Such clarity in her coloratura and accuracy of rhythm and pitch. Does anyone have her singing Mi lusinga e dolce affetto from Alcina?
yes, great mezzo. Jacobs was right casting her as Giulio Cesare in the HM recording. This is probably the kind of voice closest to a powerful castrato.
I always trust Jacob's judgement. He always gets the most fitting cast at the moment. Never disappoints. That version is probably the best Cesare on recording.
this air of oratorio is really hard her coloratura is amazing , her voice her precense is one of the best mezzos arround the world , I belive is so amazing like Cecilia Bartoli ... but I'm not sure if Cecilia is a real Mezzo
this was great but cecilia bartoli can spit this out in her sleep although she does have a great dark and rich voice wich i love she is very good but still i prefer cecilia as the queen mezzo sry buts thats just my opinion i am not puting any singer down
Thank you, Sylvie! You're the best. Almost as good as Jennie (who looks and sounds wonderful here). I don't know anyone who sings this aria better. She makes it sounds so effortless, with little affectation and much emotion! JeLa, you simply rule.
Jennifer Larmore is such a great mezzo! She looks very pretty and feminine and yet her voice has all the darkness and heaviness for these male roles. Besides, her coloratura is impeccable!
Larmore has the beautiful, real and natural mezzo voice

mediocre, timbro falso e senza colore

there does seem to be an over-darkening of the voice. But, she has great agility and control.

Larmore is such a good singer. She has such a characteristic timbre. I just wish this one was a bit faster although it still sounds gorgeous.
