Spent most of my youth body surfing.boarding this break at every single big swell that ever came in. (it gets bigger and nastier.)The single most fun place to bodyboard hands down. Big drops, huge barrels, and a quick paddle back into the lineup. And like Ikrux said the sand is just inches under your board in the barrel. Best time was riding the barrel for a few seconds after it closes out on you, then the wave collapses and you slide up on the sand and ready for the next one.

I was there midday during the peak after they blackballed it, and it was absolutely epic. I saw multiple 100 percent makable, clean, top to bottom barrels 20 ft. plus on the face. It was a damn shame you couldn't surf it, cause it was the best huge Wedge I had ever seen. Bodysurfers weren't going, and it literally looked like maxing Pipe. I think they should do away with the blackball there when it's THAT good, cause it's only once in a decade or 2 that it happens

My son grew up sponging The Wedge. 1 Hr drive, arriving before sunrise till 10am kick out. It takes balls to drop in on those huge faces knowing you're gonna get hammered in 2 more directions before you're through. The body surfers are really fun and hilarious to watch starting at 10am. I have nothing but respect for body boarders. Represent!

FWIW, the boat guys from :35-:40 could be posterchildren for the "Don't let your boat get caught here!", campaign. That is perfect form to get rolled in the channel during a high surf event. Follow the wave with your boat!

Good to see some old school body surfers. Back in the 60's it was a rare sight to see a "belly board" as they were called back then... and you never saw a surfboard at The Wedge. I bodysurfed here from 1963 - 1970. I returned in 1998 to bodysurf here and celebrate my 50th birthday. Good to see my old stomping grounds again.
