AWESOMENESS! I had a tv-b-gone. I used it all the time. It wore out about a year ago. I'm going to go order another kit. I miss being able to talk in a restaurant to people without a loud TV over our heads.
@SheIsJustice It's not really being presented as a prank though, is it? If it was all about having a laugh, fine. It's not the device that is the issue here (it's quite a cool gadget) so much as the attitude of wanting to make everyone bend to your will in the most cowardly, passive way possible.

but zev007 and luscaslayer are right, thats sabotage. TVs in bars etc are'nt there to annoy the people. If you dont like TVs, go into a bar without them.
I actually found a way to use this without being a prick in public. I can use it when my roommate leaves the tv on all night or when she turns it on in the morning for no reason. I wouldn't go to a damn public place to be a bitch though...
Seriously people, have a sense of humor. She's showing something interesting and innovative you can do with clothing. you can just not make this project, problem solved!
Wow, there is a lot of hate in these comments. I have to agree to a point that you could really get some servers in trouble by continuing to turn off the tv, but as long as you are not a dick about it, this is a pretty fun project. Thanks for the idea!
I think this project is fascinating, but much more in the framework of an April Fools prank that you use on a friend rather than something to solve the "problem" of going to a restaurant or bar with a TV. It's good for mischief, I suppose, but you're really just creating a hassle for the staff who have to keep going by and turning the TV back on. And what if they waste money on buying a new TV because some jerk made them think theirs was broken? Does that somehow make you feel better?
this is just rude, why would you want to be an ass hole and do this, i never watch tv, if there's a show i want to see i will just catch it on the computer without the ads but i respect people rights, especially the establishment owners right to have a tv there, its up to him to have it on or off, grow up please you self-centred ass hole
Why the lights way to say "Its me" LOL. You realize that the TV's are there for people that are alone and arent meeting anyone and to avoid have everyone in the bar hear your conversation LOL
@nagaempress They are actually infrared LED's. These are what send the signals to the television. Most cameras pick up the infrared, however. Try it with your TV remote and a camera (cell phone camera should work). When you press a button on the remote while looking at the end through the camera you should be able to see a light.
why wouldn't you just go to a restaurant without televisions. i admire your creativity but this is just WRONG. THere are plenty of restaurants without tvs.
This is an interesting project on the tech end but I'm not sure about just turning off TV's in places you go to eat. You may not like the TV being on but others do especially if the game (any game) is on.
I love the idea, alot of people go out to resturenrs to eat and talk to people, its a pain if you can't even here to the person besides you vs the tv across the room. Sometimes people don't know when its too loud and you can't hear youself think.
I wonder how many people are going to try and kick your ass now when they see that the TV keeps shutting of at the food joint, now that you've made this... Next, put some pepper spray on the other side of the collar;-D

@Aleksandar998 Shut up because I have a valid opinion? Look, if the places you frequent have their TV on too loud, you don't build some sneaky contraption to be able to control their property, you ask them politely to turn it down, and I guarantee you, 100% of the time they will turn it down. This project represents a "human being social fundamentals" fail.
Very cool! I was surprised to see all the criticism. What, am I the only other person who doesn't like that there are always TVs on everywhere, whether they're being watched or not. It sucks as much as deafening conversation-killing music. Sometimes it's *nice* to be able to read a magazine, or talk to a friend, or shoot the breeze with a stranger. Ubiquity of TV And she's obviously not going to sports bars, where people go to watch tv! The zipper thing is just clever fun. *Very* clever!
@OlivierLeHumanze So just ask to turn off the TV. If no one's watching it, no problem, right? Creating a device to turn off the TV without anyone catching on that it was you implies that you're doing it when it will piss someone off. Otherwise, no one would care.
You know why places have TVs? Because some people like watching them. Why are you more important than they are?
Sometimes I don't like it when I go to a restaurant and there's a TV at the table. You know what I do? It's pretty cool, and easy! I politely ask them to turn it off!
WOAH, Everyone on the internet likes TV's WAY TOO MUCH. Take a break, fellas. I've been in resturaunts, waiting rooms, tons of situations where I'm the only person it the presence of the idiot box spewing ads at me, and I never built up the veteran tv watcher's attention span to tune it out. This jacket's brilliant!
Intersting idea and good for a round of trolling, but I am also sure it will be rude if people are watching that TV. You better hope you don't get caught with that jacket, especially in a sports bar.
Wow, all these people are being just as douchey as they say you're being. Sure, it is kind of rude to turn off the tv when someone is watching it but it's still a cool jacket. There's no reason to be an asshole about it.
Go somewhere without TVs if you have a problem. Hopefully someday someone will invent a device that makes self righteous assholes like you stay home where you have the right to decide if the TV is on or not.
This is the most ridiculously passive-aggressive thing I have ever seen. If you walk into a bar or someone else's house and expect them all to conform to your tastes and desires then you conform to my definition of a douche.
While your project was well constructed your reasons for making it are not. You do not get to decide for everyone around you whether the TV should be off or on. Take your self important attitude and shove it.
Guys - I`m actually flabbergasted by the sheer amount of vitriol in the comments. It`s not like the tv-b-gone is a new product. In fact there are "About 2,860 results" on youtube alone just for that specific search, hyphens included. This thing is a harmless little prank and it`s been around for years without anyone disabling your favourite jumbotron. I wonder what would happen if terrorists disabled all TVs in all of america - armageddon, probably...
I can see this making an annoyance in the local TV shop and that'd be funny for some teenagers to do. I can see that it'd be good for mothers to turn the TV off and the kids not know what's happening too.
In a bar, especially a sports bar, people would just get pissed off.
I can see the bad a good points to this. I'd say though, just find a bar that doesn't have a TV or ignore it.
I think it's a pretty cool idea, but I wouldn't use it in public places, maybe as a joke at a friends house.
Also, if I go out and there is a TV I barely notice it because the people I'm with tend to be entertaining enough for me. If it does annoy you that much there is almost always the possibility of facing away.
Please someone have video documentation when this self centered lady goes into a bar during playoff season. Or someone send her overseas during the World Cup.
Seriously, how simple minded do you have to be not to be able to ignore a television. Are you a cat? Do flashing lights confuse you? What if I got tired of people with glasses being at the bar? Could I knock them off your face?
Interesting idea for putting any kind of electronic project into clothing, but one problem.. washing the jacket. Alternative: rather than running battery wires from pocket to lapel, sew in a long fabric tube 3-4cm in diameter with the ends opening into the pocket and behind lapel. Put a plastic connector on the battery wires so you can unplug and remove them for washing. Use a long stick to later reinsert wires through the fabric tube. Also, mount the LEDs using push-in friction-fit sockets.
Can you make me a jacket with a built in LED detector and a taser so I can secretly discover and punish the passive aggressive prick that tries to do this at the bar I'm watching TV at?
This is awesome! It's so hard to find a bar/restaurant/cafe that DOESN'T have a TV on & they are impossible to ignore, even if you're totally uninterested in what's on them. Reading many of the comments here, I'm shocked at how important people think TV is... If you really want to watch TV uninterrupted, stay home & do it there!
@lcorriveau Hey you self-entitled idiot, just because you find TVs hard to ignore, it doesn't mean you get to turn them off at your whim and fancy without regard for other patrons. Go take some Ritalin or find another bar.
@lcorriveau It's not that (most of) the people here find TV to be important, it's that going into places that have TVs and stealthily turning them off without consideration for people who might be watching them is rude. Imagine I was annoyed by people reading books and built a device that would slam peoples' books shut without them knowing it was me. That would be rude, wouldn't it? Same idea.
@lcorriveau If there are so many people who want to see TV in a bar/restaurant/cafe then the owners put the TVs in for a reason. It is not for the handful of nay sayers to impose their will on the masses.
People are so dumb. Shes just showing yet another cool thing you can do with technology and fashion. She took the time to make this video and post it, and I think it's neat. You don't have to make one. Stop hating and just say thank you for showing us your neat creation. And if someone turns off a tv you are watching, make everyone check their coats, duh!
Hay Becky have you tried jut like not watching the TV when your at restraints and bars? Most places put there TV's on mute (at least wear I live in the general western Washington State area) so all it really takes to ignore them is to you ignore them.
Y'know, if you're embarassed by actually using a non-concealed TV-B-Gone, maybe you should consider what that means. Could it mean...people don't like what you're doing? You're basically doing something rude in a stealthy way so that the people who get mad don't get mad at you. Way to stir some shit.
Just don't go to a bar or restaurant with a tv if you don't want one playing when you're in it. If you don't want a tv playing, don't be around it. Don't be the rude person who's sneaking in a device to shut it off. You know it's an ass thing to do if you're concealing it in your clothes.
Why oh why did I not have this last night when I went to urgent care with a migraine and the horribly ignorant doctor left a really annoying reality show on for me to "watch" while he took his time filling out paperwork? I love this! And for u small bars who think this is a bad thing, think again. A lot of people leave your establishments early when tvs are annoying.
Why are your whims more important than the preferences of other patrons in the bar?
I really hope you do not take this initiative at a small, privately owned mom and pop bar or diner. These days we are really struggling just to keep the doors open, and little disruptions like this might seem funny to you, but it isn't to little bar owners.
I like you Becky, you always have really good projects but I'm not too sure how ok I am with the tv be gone product. It seems to be a little rude to me. But I thought it was really awesome how you concealed it in a coat, great job! :)
When I go to concerts, I really prefer that they do an acoustic set, so I just sneak behind their equipment with an insulated pruning sheers until I get the desired result.
I have to agree - if you don't like TV in public places, then don't go. That's kind of like going to a strangers house and turning off their TV. Not everyone watches the TVs in public, but some do. Just face away from it, go to a bar with live music etc.
To think you should have that control over what others do is seriously messed up :-S
Wow, nobody gets to watch tv if you don't feel like it, huh? You know, you COULD just NOT LOOK AT THE SCREEN instead of impeding on everyone else. What a bitch.
If you don't want to watch TV when you go to a restaurant, just go to a restaurant without a TV.
If you're just dying for a beer, and your favorite bar has TVs, please respect that fact, and please respect the other patrons who might want to watch television.
In summary, going around turning off TVs because *you* don't want them on is incredibly rude.
@wereallmadhere9 And perhaps, seeing as our lives are so steeped with technology and staring at screens anyway, wouldn't it be nice if we socialized like people USED to? You know, face to face, without any stupid TV going on? Have we become so uninteresting as to need a TV in order to socialize?
@wereallmadhere9 While you bring up a valid point, face-to-face interaction is not dead. However, she didn't create her jacket in order to get people to start talking to each other. She created it because she obviously thinks it's okay to walk into a bar/restaurant and decide on her own, whether or not the TVs should be on.
At the end of the video she walks into a bar. Sports fans go to bars all the time to watch and discuss games. What gives her the right to deny them that?
@wereallmadhere9 I spend all day at work socializing with people who scream at me because they don't think I deserve the respect of politeness. If I want to go out to a place, enjoy some sports with friends, who the HELL do you think you are to tell me how I should enjoy my night? Who appointed you police of conversation? Don't you think if people were more interesting than a glowing box on a wall, there wouldn't be a need for them?
@dolphingirlrocks whoa whoa settle down little girl no need to be cunty...dozen other people make comments like mine and you didnt say a dam thing...this a dart board pickin ?
So it's alright as long as it's set to *your* tastes right? Here is an idea. If you don't want to eat where there is a TV why don't you just not eat where there are TVs?
Still a collosally self entitled douchebag thing to do. i dont go into a resturant or bar like i am the king of it and expect everyone to conform- against there will- to what i want.
Pretty rude thing to do actually. You can just leave the bar if you dont like what a bunch of people may already be invested in when you arrive.
Wowza. That's the last thing I want to have to deal with when I'm waiting on 10+ tables. Looks like my job just got a little more stressful. (foods up another table four straws one no ice booster seat rag no penos mid-rare on the left WHAT? WHY ARE ALL THE TVs OFF?! oh no oh no oh no... WHERE ARE ALL THE TV REMOTES?? .... go to the bar get them all... what was I trying to remember?
i'm glad i'm not the only one that thinks this is a little rude... half the time, the tvs in any public place are muted anyway. does the flashing image really hinder your bar experience that much?
Awesome! I was at a restaurant the other day and from where i was sitting i could see 18 TV's.... Oh god! what would everyone do??? Have a conversation with their neighbors?!?!? god forbid, lol
Fun vid Ms. Lady Stern, Uncle Pappy approves. However, it's interesting to note, that just about everyone that is commenting negative things toward this video, would in fact use this device if they were to have one in their possession. And that most likely the only reason they do not have one, is they lack the motivation to actually make one. Which makes me ask the question: Why are they looking at a @craftzine video anyway? Becky rocks!
@blightproductions Looking at it because it was on BoingBoing. And, no, I do not want one of these and I would not use one to turn off TVs in a public place. I'm not rude enough to think my preference that TVs be on or off is more important than the preference of the TV owner and everyone else in the establishment.
I'm going to construct a jacket with a built-in device, which, when activated will summon Lou Ferigno, who will then physically remove any creepy androgynous gingers from the establishment.
@weltart well you did watch the video and commented on it so either way you just helped her and the channel get more attention...all the better for them =)
It is awesome because I'm selfish & passive aggressive! Ha ha ha lol, so counter culture. Nothing says iconoclast like wrecking things for other people out of a misplaced sense of entitlement!
Wow, you're a self entitled asshole and I hope to god someone throws you out of a bar minus your incredibly rude jacket. You're not the only person on the planet, find a bar without T.V.s.
@THarlowB I wouldn't have put it quite that bluntly but, that's exactly my take on it. Incredibly rude and selfish to think your desire to not watch TV trumps the desire of the actual owner of the TV and others who are actually watching the TV. If you don't want to watch TV go somewhere without TVs or develop the willpower to not watch a TV just because it's on.
@schoolmaster1945 It looks like a TV remote control under x-ray. I've flown with mine many times before without incident. It's great for TVs in airports, but beware that they may route sound through a PA so the device will only disable the image. =]

captainpiccard 9 months ago 2
You know why places have TVs? Because some people like watching them. Why are you more important than they are?
Sometimes I don't like it when I go to a restaurant and there's a TV at the table. You know what I do? It's pretty cool, and easy! I politely ask them to turn it off!

narogsun 9 months ago
WOAH, Everyone on the internet likes TV's WAY TOO MUCH. Take a break, fellas. I've been in resturaunts, waiting rooms, tons of situations where I'm the only person it the presence of the idiot box spewing ads at me, and I never built up the veteran tv watcher's attention span to tune it out. This jacket's brilliant!
MeretricStudios 9 months ago
Why don't you just go somewhere that doesn't have a TV you self-righteous cowbag?
Rudeness personified.

Shapeways 9 months ago
Intersting idea and good for a round of trolling, but I am also sure it will be rude if people are watching that TV. You better hope you don't get caught with that jacket, especially in a sports bar.
BygPhattyPlus 9 months ago
Wow, all these people are being just as douchey as they say you're being. Sure, it is kind of rude to turn off the tv when someone is watching it but it's still a cool jacket. There's no reason to be an asshole about it.
RurikoInoyuki 9 months ago
People who need to watch TV every goddam place they go are lame and pitiful. This jacket rocks.
smacktard69 9 months ago
Go somewhere without TVs if you have a problem. Hopefully someday someone will invent a device that makes self righteous assholes like you stay home where you have the right to decide if the TV is on or not.

I should say that the effort and ingenuity behind this is commendable, but there are much easier ways to get your ass kicked out there.
toooldforthisshiz 9 months ago
I can see this making an annoyance in the local TV shop and that'd be funny for some teenagers to do. I can see that it'd be good for mothers to turn the TV off and the kids not know what's happening too.
In a bar, especially a sports bar, people would just get pissed off.
I can see the bad a good points to this. I'd say though, just find a bar that doesn't have a TV or ignore it.
MrComputerSaint 9 months ago
I think it's a pretty cool idea, but I wouldn't use it in public places, maybe as a joke at a friends house.
Also, if I go out and there is a TV I barely notice it because the people I'm with tend to be entertaining enough for me. If it does annoy you that much there is almost always the possibility of facing away.
oLynxXo 9 months ago
Please someone have video documentation when this self centered lady goes into a bar during playoff season. Or someone send her overseas during the World Cup.
Seriously, how simple minded do you have to be not to be able to ignore a television. Are you a cat? Do flashing lights confuse you? What if I got tired of people with glasses being at the bar? Could I knock them off your face?
toooldforthisshiz 9 months ago
Interesting idea for putting any kind of electronic project into clothing, but one problem.. washing the jacket. Alternative: rather than running battery wires from pocket to lapel, sew in a long fabric tube 3-4cm in diameter with the ends opening into the pocket and behind lapel. Put a plastic connector on the battery wires so you can unplug and remove them for washing. Use a long stick to later reinsert wires through the fabric tube. Also, mount the LEDs using push-in friction-fit sockets.
DMahalko 9 months ago
Can you make me a jacket with a built in LED detector and a taser so I can secretly discover and punish the passive aggressive prick that tries to do this at the bar I'm watching TV at?
razorsheldon 9 months ago 3
This is awesome! It's so hard to find a bar/restaurant/cafe that DOESN'T have a TV on & they are impossible to ignore, even if you're totally uninterested in what's on them. Reading many of the comments here, I'm shocked at how important people think TV is... If you really want to watch TV uninterrupted, stay home & do it there!
lcorriveau 9 months ago
@lcorriveau Hey you self-entitled idiot, just because you find TVs hard to ignore, it doesn't mean you get to turn them off at your whim and fancy without regard for other patrons. Go take some Ritalin or find another bar.
razorsheldon 9 months ago
@lcorriveau It's not that (most of) the people here find TV to be important, it's that going into places that have TVs and stealthily turning them off without consideration for people who might be watching them is rude. Imagine I was annoyed by people reading books and built a device that would slam peoples' books shut without them knowing it was me. That would be rude, wouldn't it? Same idea.
TheRealBackRow 9 months ago
@lcorriveau If there are so many people who want to see TV in a bar/restaurant/cafe then the owners put the TVs in for a reason. It is not for the handful of nay sayers to impose their will on the masses.
MrJodalmighty 9 months ago
I think that the invention itself is beyond cool, actually using it is a very different story. It's disrespectful, rude, and probably illegal
krakkenchaos 9 months ago 2
People are so dumb. Shes just showing yet another cool thing you can do with technology and fashion. She took the time to make this video and post it, and I think it's neat. You don't have to make one. Stop hating and just say thank you for showing us your neat creation. And if someone turns off a tv you are watching, make everyone check their coats, duh!
angelaavalon 9 months ago
Hay Becky have you tried jut like not watching the TV when your at restraints and bars? Most places put there TV's on mute (at least wear I live in the general western Washington State area) so all it really takes to ignore them is to you ignore them.
JamisonPantley 9 months ago
This thing just rubs me the wrong way. It just seams like a way of inflecting your will on to others. It just seams very rude and inconsiderate.
JamisonPantley 9 months ago 8
Y'know, if you're embarassed by actually using a non-concealed TV-B-Gone, maybe you should consider what that means. Could it mean...people don't like what you're doing? You're basically doing something rude in a stealthy way so that the people who get mad don't get mad at you. Way to stir some shit.

Just don't go to a bar or restaurant with a tv if you don't want one playing when you're in it. If you don't want a tv playing, don't be around it. Don't be the rude person who's sneaking in a device to shut it off. You know it's an ass thing to do if you're concealing it in your clothes.
shadarko 9 months ago
Why oh why did I not have this last night when I went to urgent care with a migraine and the horribly ignorant doctor left a really annoying reality show on for me to "watch" while he took his time filling out paperwork? I love this! And for u small bars who think this is a bad thing, think again. A lot of people leave your establishments early when tvs are annoying.
angelaavalon 9 months ago
Why are your whims more important than the preferences of other patrons in the bar?
I really hope you do not take this initiative at a small, privately owned mom and pop bar or diner. These days we are really struggling just to keep the doors open, and little disruptions like this might seem funny to you, but it isn't to little bar owners.
Shaharazad221 9 months ago
I like you Becky, you always have really good projects but I'm not too sure how ok I am with the tv be gone product. It seems to be a little rude to me. But I thought it was really awesome how you concealed it in a coat, great job! :)

alkhalikoi 9 months ago 4
I have to agree - if you don't like TV in public places, then don't go. That's kind of like going to a strangers house and turning off their TV. Not everyone watches the TVs in public, but some do. Just face away from it, go to a bar with live music etc.
To think you should have that control over what others do is seriously messed up :-S

Wow, people CALM THE HELL DOWN. It's just funny, and a cool creative thing she made. SHUT UP and quit being so bitchy.
wereallmadhere9 9 months ago
@wereallmadhere9 And perhaps, seeing as our lives are so steeped with technology and staring at screens anyway, wouldn't it be nice if we socialized like people USED to? You know, face to face, without any stupid TV going on? Have we become so uninteresting as to need a TV in order to socialize?
wereallmadhere9 9 months ago
@wereallmadhere9 While you bring up a valid point, face-to-face interaction is not dead. However, she didn't create her jacket in order to get people to start talking to each other. She created it because she obviously thinks it's okay to walk into a bar/restaurant and decide on her own, whether or not the TVs should be on.
At the end of the video she walks into a bar. Sports fans go to bars all the time to watch and discuss games. What gives her the right to deny them that?
mginelsa 9 months ago 3
@wereallmadhere9 I spend all day at work socializing with people who scream at me because they don't think I deserve the respect of politeness. If I want to go out to a place, enjoy some sports with friends, who the HELL do you think you are to tell me how I should enjoy my night? Who appointed you police of conversation? Don't you think if people were more interesting than a glowing box on a wall, there wouldn't be a need for them?

Becky rocks!
blightproductions 9 months ago
@blightproductions Looking at it because it was on BoingBoing. And, no, I do not want one of these and I would not use one to turn off TVs in a public place. @THarlowB I wouldn't have put it quite that bluntly but, that's exactly my take on it.
