  • runs on the blood of christ and lubed up with baby flesh.

  • @davepaula123 Thats normal at the best of times....

  • Running rich, and maybe out of time? What do I know... LOL

  • Now the a freakin V8. Now i want one.

  • I really do like that 2-stroke sound - a lot more attractive than the Hun Diesel = 4 stroke. Still, doesn't come close to petrol.

  • u got a bad injector dood

  • pollution is the ONLY thing that killed the 2 cycle deetroit.......these things would run on greasy dishwater with a crankcase full of sand!

  • @matty8371

Yes they would... The best engine that Detroit ever made, in my opinion, is the 2 stroke diesels...all the way from the little single cylinder all the way up to the gigantic 16V149... Glorious engines... In the town that I live, there are still several school buses in service that have the 6V53... Every time I see one of the older crown buses and I am driving by, I roll my window down just to hear the music of that Detroit 2 stroke... Nothing like them. Freakin Tree huggers.. I swear

  • DID YOU SET THE RACK CORRECTLY ON THE SMOKY SIDE ? MITE BE WORN LITTLE TO MUCH

  • where is the turbo video?

  • diesel 2-stroke <3

  • Looks like you have a cylinder going down where the white smoke is coming out.

  • God it must smell awesome in there :)

  • hahahaha, the ol' birdscarer! They glazed bores pretty easy too, if you didn't thrash them from memory and experience....

  • shope teacher at my old scool has ove of these in his 1 ton chevy truck, it sweet

  • Ill buy that off you hahaha.

  • seems like u got a broken injector/nozzle on the 3 or 4 left piston

  • at what rpm do these engines make the max torque?

  • @ionsunteu like 2100 i think

  • $%&# i just drooled on the keyboard

  • Wicked.

  • most detroits sound pissed off but they will pull better than almost any thing else

  • @mageac I only have a weight figure for the 6V-53 at 1830 Lbs, yes even this is twice a typical big-block. Figure a 8V-53 will come in at 2300Lbs or so..& thats why it should be shifted rear-ward. Lots of guys who do cram in Detroits mount it too high on the rails. Drop it down between the rails, this makes it a 2WD only as you won't clear the drivetrains. Box in the rails & shove it back as far as you dare..it'll take the weight. Kinda like an old style van with an engine hump.

  • I don't get it... why this raises RPM so quickly? lack of flywheel?

  • @eeretz lack of load

  • @eeretz

lack of inlet valves, lack of an intake and exaust stroke, twice the bang of a 4 stroke, no need for a big flywheel.

  • detroit 2 cycle engines have no intake valves but they do have exhaust valves , they are a litlle different than gas 2 cycles

  • @eeretz One reason is that you are hearing an exhaust pulse for every cylinder on EVERY revolution of the crankshaft as opposed to an exhaust pulse for every OTHER revolution in a 4-stroke. This always makes all 2-strokes sound snappier.

  • @DRNEGOLICIS Yes you can fit this in your Chevy, It comes in at 6.948 Litres or 424 Cubic inches. The bad thing about Detroits is their weight per horsepower..A comparable CAT motor would be about 66% the weight of a Detroit. You can get around that by shifting that Detroit all the way up to the firewall...perhaps cutting out the firewall. Mounting a Detroit this way opens up almost all other Detroit family of engines by centralizing the weight on the chassis.... 12V71 anyone????

  • @RichardEllisxyz it may be 424 cubic inches, but its WAY bigger then a big block, and weighs at least double....

  • Man love it one responsive desiel

  • do you think this engine would fit in a 1980 chevy 2500?

  • @DRNEGOLICIS Yes....but you would be "nose heavy".

  • @DRNEGOLICIS its about 7 liters, maybe

  • would this actually be able to fit into something like a 5 or 7 series? (with blowers)

  • one of those cylinders on the left side needs a new injector

  • What is causing the white smoke on the drivers side? Bad injector? Burning coolant?

  • What are the numbers on that thing?

  • caniwitech=idiot

  • i want that in my truck

  • keep her screeming !! I worked a few years age, with truck rental company. some 53, 71, 92 driver asked me how to drive.. I told them, first thing, stick your fingers in the door jam, and slam the door !!! then drive like a pissed off wet cat... they will last longer....go Detroits >))

  • detroits were never known for torque i don't know about marine spec or the 53 series but i drive an 81 pete with a 8v92ta silver series and its a 475 with 9g95 injectors making about 500hp and about 1250 ft/lbs of torque! they are not torque motors so don't lug "em you gotta keep them wound up tight! nice video by the way, like i said i don't know much about the 53 series motors but becareful putting tubos cause the older motors can't handle the pressure and you will blow it apart

  • The engine is a 1972 marine 8V53 it was rated at 400 hp idont know the torque, im workin on a vnt turbo set up but may possibly set up a centrifical blower instead. i should know this info im the one in the video,This is the only info i will release right now, Thank You

  • Hi.

I'm into geting some old detroits into a boat. I want two 8v53 and wish to upgrade them. Maybe we could try som combinations together? let me know if you find a matching pair I could buy.

  • i dont get it, why are you guys so secretive about your numbers? do you race these engines?

  • yes im gonna put it into a pulling truck to pull at the local fairs

  • i wonder how much horsepower it would produce if you added a turbo and larger injectors into that engine, i bet you can pullwell over 450hp and ungodly amounts of torque

  • hp=torquexrpm basic physics you guys need to brush up on your math . I operated power plants on uss enterprise. my prop shaft torque limit was 2.25 million ftlbs . shaft hp @ 170 rpm redline was 70,000 math is math go to a dyno shop in your home town and ask.

  • "hp=torquexrpm" Cool! that means my 5.9, with its 505 ft tq at 1800 rpm has 909,000 hp!!!

  • hp = tq x rpm /5250

  • You know it, and i know it, i was making a point to mr know it all on here who said hp was equal to torque x rpm. I merely wanted to prove him wrong. Thanks for not noticing.

  • hp = (tq x rpm) divided by 7162 for Nm and 5252 for lbf

  • Did no one else notice the sarcasm in my post? Does no one realize that i was making fun of that other guy? Are you all brain dead?

  • sorry did not read his post.

  • that's all right.

  • @86Ivar hey man, you don't know much you've helped me with that comment just now, ive been dying to know how to calculate hp, right from the tachometer to the wheels.

  • @bloodynikka1 Ill try again Remember that Power is force times distance divided by time. So rotating work: Work (in hp) = (2 * Pi * RPM * Nm) / (60*750) RPM, per min, needs to be converted to "per sec" therefore divided by 60. 750 converts watts to hp. 2*Pi is the "distance", the length of the edge of a circle. 2, Pi, 60 and 750 is constants that can be combined, giving: RPM*Nm/7162 Nm is toque, in newton meter, to calculate hp you need to know (measure) the Nm aswell as the RPM. Okay? :)
  • 240 hp and 1950 ftlb torque @ 2800 rpm is like adding 4 and 4 and getting 16

  • Diesel engine power specs always look very lopsided compared to a gasoline engine. That's just how diesels are naturally, not much horsepower but gobs of torque compared to a similar size gasoline engine. A 14.9 liter inline 6 that you will find in most 18-wheelers will only make around 600hp on the upper end, but will produce over 2000 ft.lbs of torque. The same size gasoline engine would probably make about 1000hp but only make around 1250ft lbs of torque.

  • could try a CAT c18.650 HP 2850 torque.LOL we get trucks in with the centers ripped out of double disc clutches

  • fuckin great sound!!!

  • nasty !

  • thats so pissed off its amusing me to think of a way I could get one - and hook it up to my alarm clock - imagine hearing that screaming its guts out at 6am up the valley for miles around! gaddamit I want one how much do they weigh?

  • Beautiful. For me the 8v53 sounds just as beautiful as the 8V92.

I found an old 59 cannonball single axle that I would loo00oove to stuff one of these into.

  • These things sound so sweet at high RPM!! Id love to put one of these in my 1/2 ton chevy backed by a 6 speed allison. Ooohh yeaa. Late at night you could hear me shifting for miles.

  • How much does ith weigh wet? I bet if you run a couple of turbos off of it will be even meaner

  • I wonder how I could squash that into my C30? It would fairly jump off the ground with that in it.

  • What killed the Detroit 2 strokes was pollution, fuel economy and noise.

Great engines, easy to work on. However, you have to keep your foot in the throttle when towing, you never lug a Detroit.

  • detroits never lugged to begin with.lol 240 HP and 1950 torque hahhahahaha

  • yeah it's true detroits are not known for beiing good at lugging but this little goblin here could be quite surprising with that throttle response...as for power i'm sure it's over 300hp at the very least but for torq it's lower, a lot lower...maybe somewhere around 1000pd/ft

  • no 8v produces under 1200 foot pounds

  • @spencnaz one other down fall they had was if you pulled it down to low it would literally start runing backwards.

  • @volff130 do u meen if u run it in a low gear it will run backwards? like blow smoke out the air cleaner and suck air threw the exhaust

  • @stevesai no if u have it in a high gear and pull the rpms down to were its almost going to die it can literally start runing backwards...that means the crank will spin the wrong way.

  • @volff130 lmao fuckin A.....that must be something to see and hear !

  • @stevesai Yes..that's right.

  • @spencnaz why not? i always hear never idle them i do know its not relay worth idleing them cuz theres now power

  • @spencnaz What do you mena by lug?

  • @rboffill lettin the revs fall to low while under power

  • @rboffill These engines will run backwards. Lugging them may make it stop then reverse.

  • @Dereks06 iv seen this happen so many times, its really funny when someone has it happen to them for the first time

  • @Dereks06 How do you figure they would run backwards due to lugging?

  • @electricshockproof Well if you don't punch the clutch before it completely stalls, the backwards rotation can cause it to spin backwards. Since it's a two stroke all you need is air and fuel, doesn't matter when end it comes from.

We had a guy do that to our old fire engine at an intersection, missed a shift at a four way stop and next thing you know there's black smoking coming out of the intake. Kill the fuel, and restart.

  • @kleetus92 Where does this backwards rotation come from? The flywheel's purpose is to store energy and keep it rotating in the right direction.

It does matter where the air comes from. If it's coming from the exhaust then it's too oxygen deprived for combustion.

Once it's spinning backwards, so is the fuel pump and oil pump thus starving it of oil and fuel. Show me one running backward due to a lugging situation because I just can't see how it happens.

  • @electricshockproof Driver inexperience. You'd need to be in too high a gear, and not hit the clutch fast enough, and actually have the truck roll backwards. You're correct, it screws up lots of things, oil flow and fuel, but I'm not sure how long it would run that way before it depletes its supply of fuel.

  • @electricshockproof ive seen it happen once or twice when a driver bangs the rig off a loading dock. it doesnt run well, but it runs. interestingly enough, a 3208 cat will too.

  • @cumminsfan ahh 3208 cats they smoke the most even when they run good from the ones Ive seen anyways. still cant beat that tap key start up on a frezzing day.

  • @jimbodepot I know one thing about cats and its that they start easier than any other big diesel engine Ive seen no matter the weather.

  • @jdubcbr600 hell yeah give it a half a turn over & bam! its purring like a kitten then when you mash it shell rawer like a lion haha

  • @jdubcbr600

Cat's are great engines... We have a couple of 16 cylinder cat powered gen-sets where I work... They sound good but those Detroit engines are just legendary :) Love the way they sound...But agreed, Cats start RIGHT up no matter how cold or hot the weather. Lot of times they use block heaters on them when its cold..

  • @spencnaz Yeah money was the biggest issue for detroit when these guys went out the door, they needed a quick sollution and not to spend billions of dollars on making the 2 cycle line meet emissions standards. That's where the 60 series came in and pretty much saved them, I will take a 2 cycle detroit over any other diesel any day........

  • @spencnaz I guess they had poor oil pressure?

  • @spencnaz I agree, You gotta keepm screamin. But I have to say, I always personaly got good fuel miles with the 6-71 inline series in a 71 WHITE constructor tandem flatbed, with 2 quad boxes.I hauled alot of treated lumber fresh from the plant, so its not like it was lite. But I never drove a big V series. Just a 6v, 6-71, and a 4-71.

All of them got pretty good mpg. my dad was always tinkering with them and had'm runnin clean, hardly ever smoked. Only on startup or pullin big long hill.

  • @spencnaz Noise? What a tool! Cummins and Cat make "noise"

  • Yes most of them are 2-stroke. The -53, -71 and -92 series are all 2-stroke and use a Roots-type blower to push air into the cylinder. They idle very smooth compared to a similar size 4-stroke which makes them great for bus use but you hardly see them in trucks anymore. That blower ads alot of weight and takes up space, not to mention more mechanical parts to go wrong. The 2-strokes were horrible on emissions also. Of all the trucks I've ridden in or driven, I'll take a 4-stroke any day.

  • 240 HP and 1950 foot pounds of torque.where do you have a v8 rig that will do that?

  • I must say that is one very mean sounding motor!, I wish I had spent more time learning about diesel motors. Is it true that some of them are two stroke?? Ted.

  • Thats one kick ass detroit, That would be a lovely power plant in my old 1970 Ford Capri...lol

  • drop that into a F350 and enter some pull offs!

  • So Cool!!

  • God that sounds good. 8v53's are pretty rare nowadays. What is it going into? Or just on a stand for fun? (which i totally get, haha)

  • Nice show

  • sweet

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • what with the smoking cylinder on the left side? Was this from a boat or military?

  • It probably needs an injector.

  • I was about to say the same thing.

  • @Hotrodx199 Both of them likely do....lol @ diesel breath.

  • @Hotrodx199 iv seen alot of detroits do this on 1 side only, thats common for detroit for some reason, it just happens

  • its a detroit. its natural. haha

  • Probably a worn injector. Sometimes if you load them down and work them hard they will clean up. Those 8v53's are pretty rare.

  • we have 15 sitting in the back of our yard.6 of them are brand new in crates and 8 are rebuilds from detroit back east.and we have them in buses around my town.kinda odd since they have been banned here.LOL
