Art is NOT essentially functionless - I hate that nonsense. Art serves as a conduit for emotion from the artist to the audience; if it fails to evoke emotion in that audience, it has failed. The argument here is that art must necessarily be pointless to be considered art and that's easier for people to digest, so naturally, our culture has slowly agreed and taken up that fight. Dear NEA, you were nice while we had you, down with culture, luv Amurka.

Great points Hennesy a lot of sculpture and installation is rethinking the application by taking away the original function of an object and placing it in a new space. It's basically re appropriating the limitations of items.
