And if this is true, then this is proof that Paul Gilbert is the most fucking badass guitar player ever! His musical playlist spans so fucking far and he has seen so damn much good crap and put it into his techniques and has become a riff machine, like he ALWAYS HAS THE RIGHT LICK TO PLAY AND SHIT. And it also shows hes a cool motherfucker because he picks good songs and makes good covers to show everyone he can make people like Sinatra/count basie really well.

@trinoply Well, the reason he always knows what lick to play is that once you know what scale it's in, it's actually not that hard to come up with licks. Not to take anything away from him, he's fucking amazing.

I know how exactly it is in jazz, I read jazz charts quite often for guitar. I don't want to have to take the notations and have to read it all out, because that would make my head hurt and take forever to learn. With tabs I can just learn how hes playing it because how do I know hes not playing some of the parts somewhere different on the neck and I end up learning some near impossible way to play this song? Plus tabs are good too for music because they're analyzable easily.

Look up "Fly me to the moon" on songsterr daat com. I am learning it there, and its cool because it will play the tab notation out and you can repeat it many times till you get it.

He is of course an amazing guitarist when it comes to technique and he knows his theory, but besides that he has an entire encyclopaedia of all kinds of music in his head. I mean, it's not unusual to be able to play a song after practice, but he was obviously figuring out the chords as he went along for the little examples in the begging. THAT is what I find so incredible (I wish I was that skilled)
