  • A great computer once said, "Sometimes the only way to win is to not play."

  • this song is amazing

  • I learned this song at Camp Billings !!!

  • 30 people didn't want to go home.

  • This is such a great song. Why do you guys want to destroy the great feeling it gives you with these comments? Come on, you are young men you must be livin, go now you are forgiven.

  • LOVE this song ...nice song dude!

  • Ja

  • check out sculptured air.

  • We can't even get along on YouTube how could we ever have world peace?

  • omg what camp!? i learned it at camp to!

  • <3 this song soooooo much!!! learned from camp and havent stopped loving it since

  • The chorus sounds like guster

  • Can you guys shut up? Go back to trying to get the top comment with stupid catch phrases about raping the replay button. Don't argue about the fucken past and just go on with your life. Please, this is like my first youtube comment in 2 months. Drives me crazy.

  • Haha why we fightin? lets just listen to the music!

  • An amazing song. End of story.

  • My pandora messed up and skipped this song which I had never heard before so I youtubed it, and I'm glad I did.

  • one of my FAVOURITE SONGS yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • @TheKaizer0007 I agree with you on everything you say, ei war is human nature, respecting the men and women. But with going to college and joining afterwards, I have some issues. I've been looking into that and I've visited 3 ROTC officers and many people drop out, only 50% or so make active duty and you need to pass many strenuous academic and physical tests. Easier said than done.

  • @jpitty3153 WWII was pointless? What about the end of the Depression, the drop in unemployment, the uniting of Americans to win the war(as demonstrated by everything from rationing to victory gardens to paper and Savings Bond drives). The war also set the stage for the civil rights movement of the 1950s. If you think all of that is "pointless" you're a fucking imbecile.

  • For those hating on people out there "killing others in the war" think about this...we don't just go and start a war for no reason how about we don't send any troops over then we can just let them come over here and kill you because you didn't want people over there killing them first.

  • WW2 not worth it are you fucking kidding me I agree this song is not anti war it says that some fights aren't worth it but to say WW2 was pointless your fucking insane and I love the song just to keep the hater comments down

  • Sick song, why ruin it with all these comments?

  • For the sake of argument, just go to college then join up, you'll be the one in charge. Anyway war might not be the best answer but it's in human nature. The cave man was always looking for the bigger "stick" to hit his enemy with. I pretty much think world peace is impossible, not to sound too morbid, but peace just inst in some people and if they are around then there isn't any world peace. I have the greatest respect for those men and women that choose to join, I'm not sure if I could.

  • This song is not an anti war song. Its clearly about knowing when a fight is pointless and nothing will be gained. That's all it is. Ex. Vietnam to an extent. Not worth it. The civil war and world war 2, definitely worth it.

  • @livefordramaanddance some versions by dispatch leave out drums or background singers and the bongos but this is the original not cut version and the best one

  • i have not listened to this song in a long time but i woke up this morning and checked my favorites number 3 dispatch

  • 23 people lost the "Like" button.

  • FOUND IT! I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS MUSIC, IT'S AMAZING!

  • great song!!! catchy and tells a story

  • What does it mean by " & all sounds?"

  • Mutha-fuckin great ass song should sing it to impress ladies ; )

  • Camp Deerhorn FTW

  • Re-Play RAPE!

  • Great song

  • Hmmm... for some reason, it reminds me of general iroh on avatar the last airbender... :P

  • Who cares what its about? Its a great fucking song

  • Great song

  • No one is obliging you to do anything. I'm not sure why, but that phrase kept popping out at me. I kinda had a small fallout with my girlfriend, and this song wouldn't leave my head. I think I'll learn it and sing it to her to make it up to her.

  • CAMP TALL TIMBERS FOR THE WIN

  • U guys do know that this is a anti war song right?

  • @pierceOroni thats why i like this song... ivaw.org

  • hey man do what you want this is your time no ones stoping you .you go to milatary if thats what you want.im just not looking forward to milatary because not the fact that your killing another humin being but the fact that i might die with out saying good bye to any of my friends or family

  • Guys what are you talking about this song is against war

  • Great song

  • Great lyrics

    Great music

    Great band

  • What a beautiful song

  • Semper Fi !!!! And all the men and women in the military are our brothers and sisters by blood or not... is war the only solution nooo but having respect and regardless people who have lost someone why not help the people who are still fighting instead of living in spite... Good song btw... Not my favorite but good song ...

  • How can you guys be fighting over a song that's so beautiful?

  • "This fight is not worth fighting"

  • This songs so beautiful. "This fight is not fighting"

  • @SNIPproductuonz I love jack Johnson!!

  • Look, if I was in war, I wouldn't be on the battlefield, I would be somewhere working on protective gear for our brave troops fighting in Afghanistan, and maybe some weapons, I could never kill another human being, unless they were forcing me to, and notice this is all over religion, christians Muslims Jews we all worship the same god, just In different ways and with different messengers, I say "Who cares about the messenger, as long as you get the message"

  • I think that there being forgiven for being in war

  • my name is the general... and ive never told the soldiers to go home....

  • Man I completely agree. I'm not a coward and if the country needed me I would go In a hart beat. But no way in hell am I signing up for it! War is the worst thing we cam do to each other. Why make war when you can just work at it and make pece?

  • Squid, I am in the same spot as you. Air Force hopefully. But I am also in 8th grade. In fact I just first heard this song Monday in my block class. But I have been listening to it ever since

  • im only in the 8th grade and its been my dream to serve in the military im signing up for rotc as soon as i can. I don't know it just seems like the biggest honor to be able to serve my country

  • @AvGSILLYSQUIDz @WaffleEatingWorld honestly u don't know a thing. war is cruel and hell. people go out and never come back. you'll lose best friends and possibly even get killed urself. this isn;t black ops. and i know u just said " I KNOW THAT U IDIOT" take it from a guy who's brother has currently been MIA for 4 years. u'll have to take orders, even when u think they are stupid as hell, but u can't argue. have fun risking ur life while ur commanders are sitting back watching it unfold

  • @Champerbutt How Dare You. These men are willing to risk their lives for the country they believe in and you mock them. Your brother understood the risks and still took them. You are still in no position to talk. You have never been in the army.

  • @Champerbutt i know the risks of war. i have lost many family members in war and they knew the risks but they signed up anyways because they wanted to serve their country in what is their opinion, the most honorable way possible as do I. and im sorry about your brother but thats not a reason to tell everyone else that serving in the military is a dumb idea.

  • @madcow3095 i am a junior in high school and i really want to serve my country as well. Right now i am in a hotel in vermont because i am applying to my first military college tomorow, Norwich University. Definately go to college first and do rotc or if its a military school join the corps of cadets. You will get a military scholarship and you will be an officer straight out of college and you will make more money. You have to go to college these days or you won't be able to get a decent job af

  • u've fallen behind in ur upkeep of milestones

  • Hey i need some opinions. I want to fight for my country and join the army but i also want to travel around the world and vist places. I want to go to college but i dont think i will be able to stay in it. Im 15 now as a sophomore in highschool. I also dont want to be stuck behind a desk. Please coment i need opinions.

    Thank you all.

  • @madcow3095 just make sure you kno what youre fighting for

  • @madcow3095 The army sounds perfect for you!

    Visit exotic places

    Make a difference

    Army helps you with collage

you can be out there on the front line, not behind a desk...

  • @porterbehling thanks bro

  • @madcow3095 hey man, I think that you should do what ever you are meant to do, and if that is go to the military that's great. howevver, I am completely against the army and stuff, I just don't like the idea of having a duty to kill another human being. don't think of it as killing someone from another country -- think of the Earth as one big country. think of everyone on this planet equal, and war is no exception to murder. that's my opinion, and it used to be my dream to serve in the military

  • @ringlover19 I know I'm so tired of all the sleazy songs nowadays I'm so happy I found this song I sing it all the time :)

  • i love this song so much...it's pure and so different than most music in our society today :)

  • This song is beyond Awesome! ^^

  • Whose "The General"?

  • This song brings chills and welcomes tears... and I'm unsure why...

  • When this song first came out I was in college and A bunch of my friends and I were musicians who really enjoyed jamming and smoking hookahs outside. We would all bring guitars, hand drums flutes and the like. One day we decided we'd make a show of it and we brought out my drum kit a few extension cords, electric guitars and amps with some mics. We blasted our version of this song in the middle of a college quad. We got a standing ovation that day sitting in the quad. Happiest day of my life.

  • such a fantastic song, really one of my favorites

  • This son puts war into perspective, i mean its horrible to hear even a fw americans died, imagin the enemy, i mean with a 64 KD ration there hearing ti alot more, it shows in war there is no victor

  • It's an incredible song, but also made me a bit sad that his men did end up leaving him to fight by himself, although they can't really be blamed for leaving either.

  • @TheVoracity It didn't make me sad because it's what he wanted, he lived a full life and he wanted his men to do the same, his was spent at war and he realized that it wasn't worth it, he wanted his men to have a better life than he, this song really is amazing, it literally gives me chills every time I listen to it...

  • This song makes me impossibly happy...

  • best song everr!!

  • This is a good wake-up song that gets me ready for the say when I listen to it in the morning.

  • @hellopat100 I actaually disagree I think it's "their mothers" but I dunno I could be wrong lol

  • i dont think its ive seen their mothers i think its ive seen them others

  • I love this song ... but it makes me sob every time I hear it, it's so sad.

  • When he says "time" in the chorus, that harmony could make an angel cry.

  • my only question about this song is... when everyone steps back, are they fighting anyways, or are they leaving the general? i thought they were going to fight anyways, and thats why the words echo in his head, but my friends interpreted it differently. thoughts?

  • @CommradeConrad idk i just like the song :)

  • One of my all time favorites hands down... I fucking love all dispatch. It's the kind of music that if ur really depressed or down and you listen to them it will make u lighten up and help your mind deal with those issues...

  • what do they mean when the say go the men stepped back word is that they went home or they fought

  • @willamWallace77 they all went home. after it says that he was left alone with his words echoing in his head he couldnt be alone if they went and fought.

  • @TheTheValer ty

  • :) I like it.

  • take a shower, shave your pubes, u got no time to loose

  • I love this song, I can hear it over and over again :)

  • At strbm01. No it is not about Jesus u idiot. It's about a decorated general who is haunted by his past combat and gets an epiphany about the battle ahead and it's pointlessness. He realizes that the upcoming event will scar the men for life, and in order to spare them post tramautic stress he tells them to leave and live a full and happy life.

  • r the last words, ' you got to behave? ' i cant find dat part on anie lyrics site thingie???

  • It's actually gesundheit, which means " good health" in German, that's something you learn in German 1, whover said it was spelt guzuntite and were in German 1, have your teachers credentials checked again

  • Generals don't get stripes they get stars :P great song except for the anti war stuff :(

  • @flyersboy114 before he was a general he gained stripes dumbass

  • @trojansoccer101 wow, I was jk but if you want to go into depth. Enlisted get stripes. Officers get bars, then oak leaves then an eagle then stars..... So in order for him to have gained stripes he woulda have to have been prior enlisted. Back then enlisted soldiers usually didnt become officers unless the rare field commision which wasnt so rare in WWII but in the Civil War they were rare.

  • haha i always turn annotations off and i was like wtf a black screen? but i have figured it out lol

  • good song

  • first i didnt understand the minning and i liked it... then i understand and like it even more

  • Awesome song thanks for making the lyrics

  • this song is great XD

  • my brotha showed me this song and........ .i like it :I

  • @atasteformusic

Actually by facing them it didn't mean having guilt it meant being judged one day by god for killing so many

  • ug im sooo jelous of this song

  • this song is by far the best dispatch ever made!

  • love this song

  • i thought it was "you are young and you must be living"

  • so far, about 6 lyric websites say that it's, "you are young men you must be living"....

    lol

  • you don't have to think of it so literally.

couldn't it be christian in nature, and about jesus?

  • i absolutely love this song it is so interesting and catchy and just awesome!

  • The general had fought previously to that battle and urged his soldiers to leave because one day you'd have to face the ones you killed and their mothers. In other words war can leave you crippled with guilt.

  • THIS SONG IS BEAST MODE I LOVE it

  • I LOVE EVERYONE!

  • @zainny253 he's telling them they can go home, and that theyre forgiven for killing

  • i got that they are forgiven for leaving the battle field... thats just me though

  • but they havent started killing people yet? Its just the prep for the war, isn't it?

  • @zainny253 its a song guy it can mean whatever you want

  • I think he's saying that they will be forgiven for leaving the battlefield and therefore their duties, of course the killing part is a likely possibility.

  • @HundredMillionViews

Close, he's telling them that the upcoming battle is pointless and they are forgiven their duty and may return home.

  • Comment removed

  • @HundredMillionViews no they are forgiven for deserting

  • @HundredMillionViews and forgiven for leaving him to fight alone. . .

  • you dont need to fight, its basically saying that the general dismissed the soldiers from the war so they didnt need to suffer

  • @zainny253

Actually, I think the General is saying that they can go home and that they're forgiven for pretty much abandoning their country and the army...since it's an order from their general they can't be blamed for it.

    hence *contradicting orders*

  • @zainny253 It means they can go and they won't be hung for leaving.

  • @zainny253 it means they can go home, and they are forgiven for having not done their duty, which is to stay and fight

  • @zainny253 i think it means they're forgiven if they leave

  • @zainny253

i think it could be more that they're forgiven for desertion

  • @zainny253 i think it might also mean forgiveness for AWOL

  • @zainny253 i also think it could mean that the general is forgiving them in advance for abandoning their posts, because of their guilt in leaving him.

  • @seungerchoi i agree, thats what i orginally thought when i first heard this song

  • @zainny253

only u can say for your self what it means to you, but in my opinion they are being forgiven for leaving and not doing there duty.

  • @plasticpaddy623 this song is about letting the conflicts of past generations die with them, a very good point, i might add. that's what i think.

  • @plasticpaddy623 just listen to the lyrics, it couldn't get much clearer.

  • @plasticpaddy623 That is a valid point. I would also say that they are being forgiven for past duty in the war and any kind of hurt they inflicted on anyone, because it wasn't really their choice, it was more of a duty. In a greater context, I think he is also saying that everyone in the war is forgiven, and that they should put down their weapons and leave, forgiving each other for the entire war.

  • @zainny253 It means they are forgiven of their duties as soldiers

  • @zainny253 i think it means that they need to go away from the battle, in which people who had not committed too much sins yet don't belong, and they are forgiven for all the sins they did commit up until now (not only the killings in the war, but also the desertion they are about to commit, for it is justified), in order for them to lead a good life

  • I love this song. I was just a little disappointed though when the soldiers stepped back. I mean, I understand why, but for just a second when they said "Not a man moved their eyes gazed straight ahead" Right there I thought they were going to stay and fight with him all the same.

  • i think they do stay and fight.

  • Who could hate this song.

  • @kungfu618 no one.

  • @kungfu618 no one.

  • @kungfu618 It's a good song, but it needs remaking. Some of the vocals are a bit off. Some more time in the studio methinks :)

  • @kungfu618 no one. some just dislike it.

  • Beautiful. I'm crying, I don't wanna loose my best friend who is a marine. He read these lyrics at another marines funeral. Wow.

  • i know some of you think it would sound better slower, but i like it like that. its kind of a jason mraz/jack johnson thing where you fit the words in really fast. you have to be pretty legit to get it right. i love it.

  • @nonethelesser

Can't believe i finally found someone who likes Jack Johnson he is awesome.

  • @sparky332 you can download this at tubemusicdownload com

  • i looooove this song! Thank you for posting

  • It's "You're young MEN you must be living" because he is talking to an army

  • hey thx for making this vid i love this song but cant really find a good quality version on youtube to lissen to.

  • dude crazy man great song sorry the picture dident work

  • Someone needs to make a LOST music video of this

  • I like how you did the lyrics...Very creative!! Awesome job :)

  • thanks :)

  • Idk why but this song makes me thing Civil War. It just does, even though the shower part might be a bit off from that era.

  • actually, it makes me think civil war, too.

  • @HundredMillionViews Well, there were indeed generals in the civil war... got a useful connection there :-) just kiddin' ;-D

  • @HundredMillionViews i think og Gettysburg

  • @HundredMillionViews me too!

  • this is a quote from wikipedia:

"This was our anti-war song. Although it was primarily based on the Civil War, the message was not confined to that particular conflict"

  • dude i am the same way haha. i didn't even realize that it could have taken place in any era. now that i think of it though, i have no idea.

  • @InventorsAssistant

That's because the song was based on the Civil War =)

  • @InventorsAssistant

probably because the general has a beard. The modern army does not allow beards.

  • @InventorsAssistant It's cuz the generals fighting. lmao
