Sure, Roger is a brilliant songwriter, but holy shit this is terrible. All David Gilmour needs is an acoustic guitar and his beautiful voice to make this song sound amazing.
waters wrote almost EVERY THING floyd was known for with definite and distinct musical contributions from the band...and most of the lyrics. indeed, the crossover point for the floyd didn't occur to mainstream until dark side of the moon, a concept created primarily by, and written by, roger waters. wish you were here, animals, the wall...almost all written by the man, so give him the fucking props he is due, danny newman, could he have done it without the floyd? i doubt it..but he has without.

The solos were cut probably short because the fingers of this guitarist would bleed or break if he tried to bend notes to the stratosphere like David Gilmour does.
I agree with you on two out of your four points. It is the best song from one of the best albums. But David Gilmour's performances of this song are far superior to this. For a start Waters has cut the opening solo. All Waters did was play bass and he didn't do that well. Most of the Floyd bass lines were played by Gilmour in the Studio. Read the book "Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd". Waters did very little studio work, preferring the bright lights of the concert circuit.

The only Pink Floyd material Waters wrote more or less alone was the material for The Final Cut album... which was the final nail in Pink Floyd's coffin as far as Roger Waters' association with them goes. Some of those who worked on the album even said that The Final Cut was more like a Roger Waters solo album than a Floyd album. He took away both Mason's and Gilmour's musical freedom... even going so far as to write Gilmour's solos for him.
