Janet was a natural film actress from the very start. Always gave a good performance...spontaneous and natural...she never ever "emoted ". When she had great directors like Hitchcock and Welles she gave Oscar worthy performances. She worked within the confines of the studio system but never gave a bad performance. She always understood what the film was about and her performances were always in tune with the directors intent.
I was so in love with her, when I first saw her, posing, of all places, on the cover of 'EBONY', between Tony Curtis AND Harry Belafonte! Mind you, this was 1953!
Ebony Magazine was the African-American equivalent to Life Magazine, and, rarely would a white actress grace the covers of any non-white publication.. I loved her acting, of course.. Her character in 'PSYCHO' was kind of dodgy; and her getting stabbed in the shower really queered it for me with her...
I can't make up my mind whether she looked better as a brunette or a blond.... probably the latter. Still, she was a true beauty and a great actress. Even more beautiful in her later roles on TV..... like Columbo and The Man From Uncle. Miss her dearly.
I worked with Janet and we talked about her Oscar loss. Of course, she regretted it at the time, though she never said anything negative about Shirley Jones. As time went on, and Psycho's fame and reputation continued to grow, she realized people would be admiring her performance long after Shirley's had been all but forgotten. Winning's not everything after all she said. She was right. She was also a wonderful gal!
Janet was a truly great and talented actress. There's also a very wholesome quality about her,...very genuine,...that came through in everything she did. I was fortunate enough to have gotten her autograph,...and she signed to me a very sweet and personal message. I will hold that autograph, and the memory of this special lady, dear to my heart, ALWAYS! Thank you Janet Leigh!
Janet had a natrual acting ability, because she never studied acting, but was just signed to a film contract. She probably should have won the Oscar for "Psycho" because she was amazing in it. A lovely lady, with peaches and cream skin, and was a wholesome beauty...
OMG--she had a dynamite figure!! I'd love to have a body like that...No wonder she was a Hollywood beauty. I liked her in Little Women with June Allyson and Elizabeth Taylor.
carpenters.."wont last a day without you" nice choice.i never noticed how she could go from one look to another, and still remain beautiful.well done basilnelson.
I also read that Shirley spent alot of money to campaign for herself, and that's why she won. I mean Janet won the Golden Globe that year, so she was the favored nominee that year.
Ok, I love both Janet Leigh and Shirley Jones. Shirley was not a nobody, and did not "promote herself" as people have said. I have seen both Psycho and Elmer Gantry and it's a tough call for me, but I think Janet did deserve it more. Shirley's was a break out role and showed a different side of her, but while it was very good, it wasn't too memorable. Janet's was both very good and very memorable. So, yes Janet deserved it more, but don't bash Shirley because she won.

Her most memorable role for me was in Phyco`
that movie had sent a chill to any woman taking a shower for decades. She had a quality about her that singled her out amonst many
Stars. She will always be missed.

Don't you think Janet should have won the Oscar for Psycho?
BillyL96 3 years ago
Yes I do!..her performance in Phyco should
have earned her the Oscar BillyL96.

I know, how could she lose to Shirley Jones, who was always a nobody!
BillyL96 3 years ago
Sadly even then red tape and politics had
caused deserving actors and actress,s to be denied a reward! Shirley Jones benifitted
from studio monopoly and favoritsm Im sure.

Unbeleivable!..campaigning for her self,
well it goes to show how you can persuade votes by paying the price? atleast Janet
got the Golden Globe which paints a brighter
picture to all this. Thankyou for this History lesson my friens.
