  • That girl looks SOOO bored.

  • Also I know he didn't Say to throw your head back. but telling a gymnast to look back usually makes the gymnast throw here head anyway. which is exactly what this Gymnast does in the video.

  • I disagree! you should not encourage gymnasts to look back and put there head back whilst doing a back tuck. this creates bad technique and creates a sloppy sault.. forces the sault to go back and not up.I believe gymnasts should look up in the in the reach ( right to there finger tips to create the hight). Bringing the knees to chest already begins the backwards rotation. Head should be kept neutral. not thrown back or tucked in.just my opinions. I wouldn't tell a gymnast to look back.

  • This is perhaps my favorite video :)

The dynamics between instructor and gymnast are fascinating to consider.

Everytime I watch this sequence, I get the distinct impression he is the girl's father. The cute, and at times playfully sassy expressions and body movements, are hilariously funny -- in a good way of course :)

Thank you for excellent entertainment and instruction.

  • Dan never told her to "throw her head back." You should re-watch the vid and find out what he actually says.

  • ...what??

    that's just wrong!

you don't throw your head back..you kepp your head forward and tuck..

one trick is if you you get someone to stand behind you while you do your tuck..if they see your eyes when your rotating your doing it wrong.

  • :P Did she fart at :52 ?

  • he sure did xD!

  • I've always taught that a round back position makes the rotation easier. throwing the head back makes impossible to keep that round back position, it will lower the gymnast's centre of mass and the backflip would come out very low. it would make the rotation itself more difficult as well, a flat back position meaning longer body semgents and a consequent major moment of inertia. any biomechanics expert?

  • thats my best friend ann!!!!

  • why is he telling her to throw her head back? that's not a good idea, will create bad habits.

  • once in air, her head should go back. Watch any high level gymnast in slow motion. You need the chest and head to rotate as well. If the head does not go back, it will cause counter-rotation. I tell them to look for the ground behind them once the arms pull down to get the same result without having them think - throw your head back.

  • I just watched the video again...he never said "throw your head back." He says "she grabs her knees and looks backwards." He is absolutely correct - even with beginner gymnasts.

  • she executes it fine... but suggesting that she throw her head back AT ALL is a bad idea... especially for those just learning the skill. once they heard HEAD BACK that is all they will do... bad gymnastics minute imo = / haven't seen many good ones since Mary Lees

  • look back? what are you talking about? the head is supposed to stay neutral which means you should be looking at your knees, and then opening early to spot the floor

  • @apluskel If your looking at your knees your head isn't neutral anymore....

  • @marluza89you can see your knees without having to bend your head forward. You can look down at the beam and keep your head neutral at the same time as well, if we're quivelling.

  • in my gym thats called chucking..........Its also called WRONG

but i do suppose you have to look back at some point or you'd fall on your bum

  • Check out the jujimufu tutorial

    /watch?v=mZ8CRrFXzH4

    He does it better.

  • ummm.... yeah

ur not supposed to whip your head back... (look back)

  • hmm...looks backwards? I thought that was improper form?

  • @redblackJACKtricking She's looking forward on the takeoff though! She's only looking back once her knees are up and she's done half a somersault, I think she's probably just looking for the landing at that point

  • @redblackJACKtricking yea that's what i thought too... hmm. you'll naturally see the floor if you keep your eyes open.

  • i agree...
