No they're not , they're releasing it 2010 now, they're releasing the new iPod touch 3rd Gen.. 9th september then the tablet sometime in february at the MacWorld keynote speach.

I think you got the right idea when it comes to having to change the operating system. But Multi-Touch also provides a great deal of dynamic control over your data. There are some pretty cool things that can be done. Now, there has to be a very adaptive and scalable user-interface system setup to provide that control in an intuitive and easy to use way. well the only reason I think that that's still a while away is becayse of the power consumption of a device. I dont think that many people would want a tablet with 32GB of memory so they'd have to put in a hard drive which sucks up battery and there's the screen which ofcourse also love consuming power and I'd guess a GPU for tha sized screen wouldn't be to energy friendly either. but to be honest I can see apple role out one of them in the next 6-8 years. also nice vid.
