One reason somebody might dive head first is because if the first basemen comes off the bag he has to tag you. Being 6 inches from the ground would be a much harder target than 6'2 or 6'3

actually theres many reasons they dive to first.. mainly done because you can reach first quicker. and it has nothing to do with listening to the sound of the bag... that was the dumbest thing i ever heard.. you want to try to hear someone step on a bag in fenway with 39,000 screaming fans.. thats why the umps move off to the side.. so they can see the angle of the ball being cought in the glove and the players foot hitting the bag.

lmfao mythbusters?? yea those guys are wrong 90% of the time.. that show is dumb and fake..they rule everything as busted because they couldnt get it to work, ive seen them do one with one of them toy race car sets from back in the early 90s that u hold the trigger and they go around and around.. if you add water to the track where the plug is in.. it can catch fire when the car passes it.. ive done it as a kid.. they couldnt get it done and called it a myth. when infact it works.

@gibbs1223 Actually, diving headfirst will cause you to reach the base faster. Think about it: while you leap forward, you're hardly losing any speed, and you convert your height into length across the basepath.

Saying otherwise is like saying it wouldn't help to dive to catch a fly ball.

That's very stupid. If I was a manager of a baseball team they would be fined several hundred dollars each time they dive into first. After all, batters are allowed to overrun the base on plays like that.

Players slide into first to make it harder for the umpire to tell if they're out, since they listen for the sound of their foot hitting the bag... I agree it's a stupid thing to do, but sometimes it works.
