I saw James Bradley speak at the Los Angeles Public Library, and it was a fascinating talk. He pointed out that the bulk of Teddy Roosevelt's appointments to his cabinet were profitting from the opium trade. The race theory used to justify absurd and cruel policy seems to have held sway through US actions against Korea and Vietnam, and a version of it may have entered into policy making against Iraq and Afghanistan. The poppy connection in Afghanistan is plain.
