I was privileged to be his 14th Ph.D. graduate (CS 1998), out of 17. He was a great scholar, always reflective and conducive to learning by the way he talked with you. I always found him to be helpful, thoughtful, and inspirational.
I don't think this video mentions it, but Professor Ray was a UIUC graduate too (Ph.D. ECE 1961), under James E. Robertson. He's listed in the Mathematics Genealogy Project.
Sylvian Ray is a Ray of Light in Heaven now.
