  • I remember listening to this song in the late sixties. I was a beginning guitarist and didn;t even know where on the neck to start lol ! .Anyway things change. Great song !!!!!!!!! and of course canadian and coming from the jewel city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Classic late sixties on AM radio, 1050 Chum! Cool song!

  • the Ducks rock!

  • A Canadian Classic !

  • Incredibly this was covered by a very young band in Chile in 1968...Los Sicodelicos, whose album is nothing special...and 'Gaslight' is definitely one of the best tracks on it

  • The UB is/was really great. This is the first time I listen to them but not the last. Thank you Youtube!!! There is an enormous musical treasure to discover. Listen for example to an unknown band called THE ZETTLERS and the tunes "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". I'm totally up in the sky!!!!!

  • What was on the B side of Gaslight? It's driving me crazy. I went to W.A. Porter.

  • Rock 107.1 in Belleville plays this song all the time and it is a fantastic song! Took me a while to figure the lyrics out and get Google working for me. I think it's great that they play a classic CANADIAN song like this. I'll be looking for a CD of the band to add to my collection. If anyone has a reccomendation I'd love to hear it. Again - great song!!

  • THANK-YOU FOR THE MEMORIES...,

  • GASLIGHT!!!

  • I played with Bingham for two years, he really is a great composer. The Ducks were the best band in Canada at the time!

  • Wolud anybody send me please links to other bands like this or similiar?

  • My very favorite song of all time. Dave, do you guys ever perform around Niagara Falls / St. Catharines area? You should.

    Nancy

  • I remember the ducks from the 60s in Toronto great band

  • you guys were the coolest thing this preteen kid ever heard back in the sixties - practicing this song next door to me on Jarwick Dr.!

  • Dave, Say hello to your sister, Cathy. From John at Confed.

  • Shit man i first heard this song when i was ten they were playing it on q107 nearly a decade back and never could find this song even though the name of it was pretty obvious. I could never find the name of hte band who played this until they played this song again a few days ago. Amazing song great voice man

  • Nice to see such great Canadian Content

  • I happened to work at The Brant Inn at the time and saw The Mandala , The Ugly Ducklings, and The Paupers in succession . They were all Great! But , yeah , upon reflection , the Paupers were unique for sure!

  • Superb track now added to my collection & will be played on the show. More please

  • it plays on q107 sometimes

  • i LOVED this song! thanks for posting..i still remember all the lyrics from 40+ years ago

  • Today I found out that the guitar I played on might have belonged to Roger Mayne. It's an accoustic, a Kent guitar I believe? I have it from a friend of mine/my mom, who used to date Roger before he passed away. Just thought I'd put that out there, because I find it pretty cool that I might own the guitar once owned by a member of such an amazing band.

  • 60s music the greatest Newmarket High S.A.C.

  • I LOVEthis song soooooooooooo much!! And saw them once at the Brant Inn .

In Burlington , they played the week after The Mandala played and We got in for free again . Haha!!!!

  • I went to see them live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I was 15 years old and absolutely loved this song. Still do!!!

  • Every Time I Hear It I LOVE IT More and More !!!!!!!!!!!!!Saw them do it live at the Brant Inn in Burlington, Ontario , and it was GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!I can't believe that they didn't have more hits .

  • Great song , coulda used a better lead solo , don't yu guys agree!!

  • Sounds great Dave! Thanks for posting this! Still love the song after all these years!

  • Nothing like good old fashion 60s Canadian rock Definitely remember this song.

What comes to mind is Battle of the Bands concerts in Ottawa mid to late 60s. There'd be bands like Ugly Ducklings; Paupers; Mandala; Luke & The Apostles; Yeomen; Squires; Stitch in Tyme; Lords Of London; Haunted; Rabble; Sinners; etc

One band wore white suits with big suit jackets buttons BUT everyone had a different color; one had all bright red buttons; one had bright blue; bright green; orange ...What an effect.

  • Polskich użytkowników YT, poszukujących więcej wiedzy o The Ugly Ducklings, zapraszam: cogra.pl/index.php/szacun/dave-bingham-i-the-ugly-ducklings-pogawedki-o-rozwoju-garncarstwa-artystycznego-w-kanadzie/

  • I love this song...Classic !

    Thank goodness for Psundays!

  • @PlayIt4MeAgainSam

Psychadelic Psunday!! Ahh yezz! There is nothing finer than kicking back on Psunday and dialing in the mighty "Q"

  • Memories of dances at Uxbridge High. Please never remove this song. This is the music that is no longer played since the death of 1050 CHUM.

  • @johnpark22 - Have no fear, John. It shall be here for a mucho longo time!

    D.J.Bingham

  • @Nothin66 Dave: any chance you can send me the chords so i can play this at home...it's one of my all-time favourites

  • @johnpark22 - If I'm correct, CFZM 740 has an oldies program on Saturday nights where it's possible to hear this song. I have to agree, it was a damned shame that CHUM couldn't last (as an oldies station, anyway). On the bright side (I hope), doesn't CKOC's signal get into Toronto, are they still oldies and if so, wouldn't they be willing to play this song?

  • @johnpark22 there's still oldies 1150 in hamilton, they revive the old toronto bands!

  • @johnpark22 actually I hear this on psychedelic sunday on Q107 in toronto sometimes

  • Back in the days when the Broom and Stone was a hotspot for Toronto Music. Fantastic stuff !!!

  • Great, great, but unfortunately forgotten Canadian band.

  • Let's not forget Nucleus, Thundermug, Steel River. When I was 17 I was in a band called Bliss, we opened for April Wine at Agincourt C.I.

  • @fuzzysting

I still have the Nucleus album on CD and play it all the time. Anyone who hears it askes about it.

    -ray-

  • @appreciateupthemusic Last year I bought the Nucleus album on red vinyl, had to get it shipped from California. I also managed to get it signed by Greg Fitzpatrick who's still kicking around the music scene in Newfoundland, Can.

  • @fuzzysting Nucleus actually became A Foot in Cold Water

  • @fuzzysting yea Nucleus,Mandala!!

  • Hey, Wow! I remember doing the dishes and listening to this song on CHUM AM (FM still to come). It was such a powerful, rockin' song. Let's spread the word about this great Canadian band

  • golden

  • MINDBLOWING

  • In retrospect I can't believe how many good bands played at my high school in the seventies. The Ugly Ducklings, The Paupers, McKenna Mendelson Mainline and Lighthouse. It was a magical time. I sort of remember a lot of it!!!

  • I went 2 New Toronto Secondary School, as well as all the above bands, we also had: Luke & the Apostles, Edward Bear, Chilliwack, Lighthouse played a few times, Skip & Ralph lived in the area & knew all the local musicians. My fav was always Mainline, we went everywhere 2 see them & David Wilcox & Max Webster

  • You are so fortunate,I've just rediscovered these guys.I'm from Grimsby,Ont. I can't wait to introduce my kids to this great band.

  • Sounds a bit like Iron Butterfly.

  • Saw The Ugly Ducklings open up for The Rolling Stones @ Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1966 along with another great Canuck group from that era, Mandella. And let's not forget The McCoys. But the Ducks were my favourite. These guys should have become huge internationally. Thanks for posting this Nothin66.

  • wish i was alive to see that show

  • Agree 110%

  • I recall earlier this decade, what was then CHWO (now CFZM) at 740 kHz would play this song on their Friday or Saturday night oldies shows. I have a friend who worked as a DJ at a few Canadian radio stations back in the day. Being that I was almost certain that I wouldn't find this record anywhere here in the 'States, I asked him if he had it (he did) and asked if he'd make a recording for me. So the 'Ducks' do have at least two fans south of the Mason-Dixon.

  • This is one of my all time fave songs, and the pics are fab!

  • Saw them play a dance at our high school in '68 & they played this song - were they ever LOUD!

  • Yeah, Buffalo49! We were loud all-right! Mike McKenna used to play his '59 Les Paul Sunburst through TWO Fender Twins hooked-up in Series! 200 Watts of

pure RMS Power! For-the-day it was as

good as it gets. I wouldn't want to play that loud today, but for the time it was the thing-to-do!

    Yours In Music,

    Dave Bingham

  • Hey Dave, what did you think of the Paupers. Your band was great i went to Cederbrae.

  • Hey Floormanron! I drive by Cedarbrae every now & then & I remember. But it was a different time. Skip Prokop was a friend & I always respected his musical tastes. I gotta say tho' that The Paupers were special. Totally unique & unlike any band before or since!

    D.J.

  • @floormanron : Now there's a blast from the past. I remember Skip Prokop before he was in The Paupers . Man I feel old LOL.

  • Paupers was Skip Prokop's band before Lighthouse. Awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • Ace.

  • 'Ace'

Man I haven't heard that in years. You from T.O.?

    Loved this band!

  • No. I'm from Clerkenwell.

  • Beautiful.

  • There were so many great bands in T.O. at this time it amazes me how many of them I saw playing at high schools. The tradition of Canadian rock music is long and deep and the Ugly Ducklings were a great part of it.

  • great song the singer sounds alot like Eric Burdon

  • angie12323 - You're right! - he does sound like Eric Burdon here at times. Cool! I never noticed that before...

  • Great song, and a joy to hear in it's heavyweight mono mix!

  • The Ugly Ducklings were Canadas first while blues band, first punk band and first metal band all rolled into one. With a decent manager and record company support they would of given Zeppelin a run for the money and for sure blown away The Stones. ( as they did at MLG back in 65 or 66 )

  • I always thought Mike Myers could have resurrected this song for Austin Powers. Incense and Peppermints was too cliche. Gaslight's reletive obscurity would have provided an intrigue factor.

  • wow this reminds of psychedelic psunday in the summer times with the woman and the bong ;)

good times, i love these guys

  • Hi Greg. - No Mike was not on the recording. He joined the band in Sept.'67 just as "Gaslight" got

into the top ten. Believe it or not, the guitar was played by Hugh McCracken who played on "RAM" with Paul McCartney and is disputed to have played on "Brown Eyed Girl" with VAN the Man!

    D.J.Bingham

  • I had no idea Mike McKenna was in this band. Is he playing on the recording or did he join after?

  • one of my favorite songs of all time and a big influence on my band The Torcus also from Ontario. check us out Dave!

  • The "DUCKS" did it first. It was writen by a New York cab driver named Carl Spencer. He taught me the song right in the recording studio. There are other tunes with Gaslight in the title, but if anyone ever did this particular "Gaslight", it was after The "DUCKS"!

    Dave Bingham

  • and it was originally written for Gene Pitney...and the guitarist was Hugh McCracken...

  • Did anyone ever hear of a 1960s Toronto group called the Lamplighters that also did this song? Do you know who did it first?

  • There were half a dozen great bands in T.O. around this time and a lot of them played at our high schools. The Ugly Ducklings were one of the best. I hope all the members are doing well. Great memories.

  • I lived with the Ducks at Charlie Browns on Cumberland. in the original village. Just saw in a video that Roger Maine passed on in "04. Dave sang like Jagger Glen looked like Brian Jones. Great memories

  • I'm staying away from that crazy chick-don't particularly feel like being lit on fire.

  • does anybody know where they are today?

  • What a great band!...you rock Dave!

  • talk about a time warp.. just moved back 41 years to a backyard in scarborough listening to john and daves band, i think they called themselves the strolling bones which obviously had to change, hone their craft in the basement across the alley..stoned daze indeed.

  • I used to manage the band...where in Scarborough are you...Bill

  • 'the strolling bones' was the name of a band that my brother used to joke about. How Scarborough is that?? :-)

  • Only Faire, only Faire!

  • Great memories. Thanks.

  • One of my favorite songs of all time!!!! Thanks for posting!!!!

    Greg

  • This is FANTASTIC!

  • the rock...tres cool..."rock of ages"...lmao...tres cool

  • thanks

so great to hear these songs again

    I wouldn't trade the 60's for anything

    john

  • Me neither. Kids today don't know what they're missing.

  • fuckin a

  • Hey Dave, Last we spoke you went into swimming pools? Thanks for sharing and giving me a meal at The mont Blanc...Malcolm

Pete and Dave K. say Hi!!

  • Oh man, I spent all day searching for this song online under the mistaken title "Black light" becasue I haven't heard this song since I was a kid, listening to oldies every night. For some reason I thought this was a Hermans Hermits song.

Thanks for uploading one of my favourite songs growing up.

  • Thanks so much for posting this song. It was my favorite when I was in high school in Scarborough. I would have given anything to have seen the Ugly Ducklings live, but I was only 14 when they broke up, and I don't think they ever played at my school (RH King). Later I saw McKenna-Mendelson Mainline and Luke and the Apostles many times. Far Out!

  • Lived at Charlie Browns on Cumberland groving to them. Too bad you missed it.

  • does anyone have Luke & The Apostles ,you make me so high, that song rocks

  • you can actually find it on a set of compilation CDs called Made In Canada. see if it's on Amazon or iTunes.

  • Hi dave, bev here. thanks for posting. 16 Admiral Road lives on.

  • Sure would like to see them get back together.

  • Great band I grew up with. Thanks for sharing.

  • Never, ever thought I would find this great Toronto band on YT!!! Thanks, man!

  • Was this recorded in NYC or Toronto? Who played drums on the track? Still holds up.

  • It was recorded in NYC in May of 67. That was the drummer for the Tonight Show Band, NYC circa 67. I was not introduced so I never knew his name. You could do the research.

  • No research needed..Ed Shaughnessey the guy. He really directs the band. Nice vocal.

  • just tryin' ta find my members card for the Mynah Bird...great...

  • I was amazed to see that the Ducks are still around. I have 2 l.p.'s, "Somewhere Outside" & "Off the Wall" and 2 singles (45s), "Gaslight/Rimb Nugget" & "Nothin'/I Can Tell". I've nearly worn out Rimb Nugget. Big harp fan! Thanks, Dave Bingham for posting this stuff!

  • This song takes me back to the Yorkville days of the 60's just love the trips down memory lane

  • Flashback to Yorkville in the 60`s !!! Still soundas great to this day

  • Ah.. Toronto..in the late 60`s..down in Yorkville !! To me, it was my first one hit wonder classic !! Fantastic to this day

  • Oh yes, I remember these guys well; I had always been more of a garage/underground music fan, and it did not get any better than our Ducklings; I still do not think that it has, even today!

  • folks don`t realize what a tremendous r`n`b sound came out of toronto in the 60`s..you had shawn and jay jackson and the majestics, the five rogues, yeomen, jackie shane, and of course the one and frikkin` only UGLY DUCKLINGS....!

    long live the blessed ducks....

    sluggo

  • Just loved this song when I was in high school. They played it at all the school dances. How cool is that.

  • Where can I find some of your CD's? They aren't even on ebay.

  • Hey, you'll be able to buy them soon on Ebay. Keep an eye on the "The UGLY DUCKLINGS CDs" starting Dec. 5th! Look for "Freeway Records" postings!

  • actually i asked sunrise records to order on in for me. it'll take a week but i was lucky to finally find a copy. thanks!

  • I hope you weren't disappointed with what you recieved. The UNIDISC CDs are a piece of crap, musically. When they reprocessed the tracks (from vinyl) they obliterated most of our sound. If you want the REAL sound of the album check out my postings on Ebay. Nothin66,

    Freeway Records.

    Yours In Music, Dave Bingham.

  • Dave you're a garage legend.Thanks for the post.

  • i'm so happy that they have this song on youtube thanks for postin brotha!

  • Great rock song. It's a shame it wasn't a big hit outside of Canada.
