Isn't it amazing how smokers refuse to admit that cigarettes are harmful, of course the cig. company's lied about the harmful affects, they want to sell them and make millions, too bad about people dying, who cares? They didn't. As for them not tasting the same? They don't care about quality anymore, once you're hooked, you'll smoke anything!
I would say they were stupid, and didn't know any better... if it were not only 10 years ago that it was proven, not only did they know, they kept records of it. The Bio-engineered the tobacco. They had scientists purposely making it more lethal and addictive. Why not just sell tobacco, and not add anything else? They better pray there is no God. This is unforgivable. But even without God... a future generation of people will make the guilty pay. Ask yourselves, what more has not been shown.
Back then cigarettes probably were not "as" harmful as they are now. These days, they are so full of other chemicals, pesticides, etc. They don't even taste or smell the same now as they did when I was a kid. I started smoking as a teen in the 70's. But by about 1990 or so, the taste and smell of cigarettes changed for the worse.
I remember a reprint of the Reader's Digest where there were articles that stated that "even though now there is some evidence that cigarettes may be bad for your health, Dr's still say that the benefits outweigh the risks" because smoking was supposed to calm and relax you! so back in the day, they thought it was what should be done.
Evil? Really? So in the same era when they believed that Absynthe cured polio you are going to hate on them thinking that ciggs helped ailments too? They are just advertising their product like everyone else back then. Also, ciggs are PROVEN to help lose weight and keep it off. They had no idea that ciggs were as bad for you as they know now. So of course it was okay for children to be in the advertisements.

Just 10 years ago, Philip Morris, the makers of Marlboro and many other cig brands, was mass sued once their research papers were confiscated. This is how "The Truth" videos got started. It's also why the government added a special tax to cigs. Look up Eugenics. These things go hand in hand. Anything, even your health, for money.
What's so evil about it? No more evil than condom, alcohol, or drug commercials. Get off your pig trip, dude!
