Well you are hacking.. Hacking is wrong, it's a smooth moving motion of your body you have to be moving forward with the scythe not along side with the grass. If you want a nice cut and short you have to do it smooth and easy, it shouldn't stress your body that much to do it..
Marugg sells crap snaths. If you want to have a miserable experience, buy one. A snath has to fit YOU well. By the way the man in this video appears not to have a clue about scything. Neckiren, scythes and mowing are fairly forgiving about sharpening angle, perhaps you should try scything before you comment. If you all want to see someone who knows how to scythe, watch something submitted by kaivido. His 14 year-old sister could teach these daft fools everything they never knew.
Marruug corporation out of Tennesee makes good scythe and snath outfits. They also sell a book that cover the history and basics of the tool. I've got plaenty of time on the bush and grass scythe both left and right hand. They work better than a grass powered trimmer by a long way even the good ones on wheeels. It is an excellent tool.
One tip make sure that your swath cut is 20% of the blade length. The blade should strike so the stalks run from the tip to the heel of the blade.
Dude, you're using it all wrong. You're hacking the grass off.
Like a sword, the scythe's blade has to be sliced along the grass at an angle (not rammed into it in a straight line).
Watch some other scything videos here on YouTube, if you do it right, you can mow for hours without tiring and the grass will all be lined up in a neat line.
OMG that is not how you sharpen some thing with a stone. you need to keep the angle of the stone to the blade to the stone consistent or it will not sharpen very well at all.
Thanks for the advice, I would like to be better at this. Despite the criticism I am successfully using a sythe for the last number of years cutting under about a mile of electric fence and a 5 acre field badly affected with rushes. I used to use a petrol strimmers with cord or a metal blade but the sythe is faster and less work. I have a short video of a more experienced user which I must add.
Neckiren, I am a carpenter, woodworker, I shave with a straight razor, and I scythe. Sharpening a scythe, unlike a tool for wood, or shaving, is very forgiving on the angle of sharpening. Partcularly because you peen the metal to a paper thin edge prior to sharpening. You don't know what you are talking about.
Sorry, good to see anyone trying to use a scythe but that is pretty awful, get someone to teach you how to do it properly. Your blade is attached wrong, you sharpened it wrong and cut with it wrong.
I am not camera shy no not at all! I shall try and film myself when I get the chance. I am too busy working on the whole to get chance to film myself. There is a lot of instruction avilable on the net even if it is for AUstrian scythes the basic technique is the same and it involves a flat blade on the ground without the slashing seen here.
Why do you think Marugg snath is bad ? Are you referring to the straight or bent one ? Are you referring to the grips ?

This is a hell of a lot better than using a weedeater. If we used a scythe instead of a weedeater our yard'd be done three times as fast.

and its a better exercise :P

he really is bad at using the scythe. First if you cut like he is you'd need to sharpin the blade every time before you use it...........:l

Absolute truth. The cutting move is definitely wrong, the sharpening move is definitely wrong... The guy should buy an automatic one next time.
