  • it never ceases to astonish me how the Berlin Phil manages to attract not only the best wind players but also the hottest

  • @iduefoscari it makes me sad that you could put film music side by side in comparison with classical music. Music which serves films vs music which serves nothing but itself? Furthermore, 2 million hits for the Da Vinci Soundtrack? Justin Bieber's "Baby" has over 600 million. What does that tell you about making a point about quality based on popularity?

  • @badcloud56 Classical composer's had no pretentions about what they were composing. The same about literary masters like Charles Dickens. If Dickens was alive today he would be writing for " Soaps" on TV, and Bruckner would be numero uno for film scores. All I am doing is telling you where Zimmer etc got their inspiration. If 600 million want to listen to Justin Bieber, good for them. The shame is that the 2million that think Zimmer is original have probably never heard of Bruckner.

  • Blomstedt has always tried to emulate his childhood conducting hero when he's on stage - Furtwangler.

  • God, you've heard one Bruckner symphony, you've heard them all

  • @badcloud56 Sir- Your definition of Bruckner is old hat. This sample from the Bruckner 6 is absolutely original.I reiterate it is the foundation of so many modern filmscore music. You ask Hans Zimmer,Maurice Jarre,John Williams if they think that all Bruckner sounds the same. I will give you one more example . There are over 2 million hits on You Tube for Zimmers ending of The Da Vinci Code.Listen to the section after the reciptulation of the chorale in the fourth movement of Bruckners Ninth.

  • if Wagner had heard this, he would go home and burn his bloody operas

  • He´s indeed one of the absolute great brucknerians!

  • 2:06 ftw

  • The first movement of this sixth symphony is one of Bruckners greatest achievements. It is highly original, infact a lot of modern blockbuster film scores have been influenced by it,like Lawrence of Arabia,Doctor Zhivago, The Big Country although in the latter there is more of a strain of Rachmaninovs second symphony. The reprise of this "western" theme is heard again at the end of the movement ,in the most glorious chorale that Bruckner composed. Count the modulations. I gave up after thirty!

  • @iduefoscari Both Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago are scored by Maurice Jarre. Concidence? :P

  • I want Maestro Blomstedt to conduct as many Bruckner's symphonies as possible with BerlinPhil. I believe he's the greatest conductor in Bruckner. It's terrific.

  • hey what trombone is the principal playing on?

  • @mobile507 It is a pre-war instrument without valvet manufactured by Kruspe in Erfurt.

  • Watched the 6th this Friday live, in my daughter's music academy, and got amazed by the power of this composition. I believe 1:43, 2:22, etc tells us a bit of the strength for playing this...

  • Hi BerlinPhil, who is the principal clarinet here? What a great clip, once again..

  • The band should give him some titles. Excellent!!!

  • Oh NO! The clip ends right before the oboe arpeggi

  • which movement is this?

  • @pitschi2001 This is the first movement

  • BRUCKNER FOREVER

  • Most definitely the best performance of this symphony I have heard....

Looking forward to Haitink conducting Bruckner 5 this season! :)

  • Blomstedt is a great Bruckner conductor (among others).

  • Great Performance!

But why didn´t you give us the last 3 minutes from the first movement?

Those are the best bars Bruckner wrote (alongside VII mov.2 and VIII mov.4)

  • I am a layman of clssic music, but I have to say it's pleasure to hear they performing. Hope they will come to Taiwan in the near future.

  • 0:52 Am I crazy, or is the trumpeter playing on the side of his mouth?

But it doesn't matter, because it sounds heavenly, like the BP always has.

  • @Farnik01 That's Tamas Vasary I believe... he does indeed have the weirdest embouchure known to man, but it doesn't seem to matter!

  • @Haeronthegreat His name is Tamás Velenczei, to be very precise.

  • Fantastic percformance!! :D

  • Thank you, as always for these clips. BPO is a World Heritage org, without a doubt. I am a big fan of Blomstedt. Is there anything in the future with the BPO, Nielsen symphony/etc and Blomstedt?? His cycle w/ San Fran SO is great, and I've always wanted to hear BPO play Nielsen. Also, Blomstedt and the BPO are Bruckner magicians!!! THANKS!

  • I want to play the timpani!!!
