Been reading your blog for this game, it's really inspiring to me as a budding programmer. It's also a little disheartening at times seeing REALLY how much work went into making something even as simple looking as Minecraft :P I think you're on the right track with the cubes and polygons. Find a way to convert changed cube landscapes back into "polygons", and let that horizon go on forever, that's what gamers want to see.
It may be the camera movement or it might be the landscape, or it might be the music. But damn it, this has made me want to go home and find my Magic Carpet CD...
I can't wait to tear down those mountains cube by cube! ;)
I know, that means having the poligonal landscape change with the cube one, but it would be wonderfule to have the ability to carve canyons and valleys and have them converted to polygons on the fly.
