YESSSSS OMG thanks for this - I literally cringe and sink down into my seat whenever I see actors I admire whoring themselves out to companies for big bucks.
Especially when it's an Aussie actor. I never thought Baker would go the same way as Jackman for Lipton.
I DISLIKE this stupid ad. Simon Baker should NEVER had elected to play the sucker for this ad. It's annoying, & it does Simon NO FAVOURS. NOR this bloody greedy bank.
Well you know what im thinking? Im thinking this bank is telling me what to think instead of listening to me Tell them what I really think then meeting my needs. Im thinking they are trying to brain wash us by making this add. Im thinking they are also trying to get in to our head up using an actor from the mentalist tv show. AND YOU KNOW WHAT?? Lots of people are thinking the same as me. So put vote thumps up if you agree
Watch the Simon Baker Interview on Ellen 09/23/08 video. He has an Aussie accent there- but yes, I questioned a lot of people to find out why he has an American accent on an Aussie advert.. A question which is yet to be answered.
who said the Bank is trying to appeal to "Australian" customers? It's all about the "region" people... ASIA. Forget Australia, the Bank couldn't give a shit!
He's doing an American accent because he's playing his character from The Mentalist, who can read people's minds, hence the "I know what you're thinking" line.
However it was a bad move on ANZ's part to go through with this because that character isn't readily identifiable.
@silowhore Australians do that too, before vowels. He said "here offshore". Pronouncing the 'r' flows more when going straight into a word that begins with a vowel.
@MitholX yes, i am familiar with my own accent lol. but since he didn't roll the words together, he enunciated them clearly separate and paused between, you wouldn't normally roll your "r" like that , i mean if i say it now to myself the r is not pronounced. HEEEA......OFFSHORE, it's more like that. but i notice now the rolling of the r is starting to work it's way into our dialect more and more from the crap that gets peddled to us on telly on internet
Why do American's not sound as British as Aussie's? do we sound like anyone else to you all when we come to Australia who do American's sound like when they go there?
Well done! Love it! There seems to be a lot of controversy re this ad..I think most Aussies would feel this way...Insulted. (re the fake American accent, regardless of the Character h'es supposed to be playing)
After studying the traffic in this advert, I'm absolutely certain this was not even shot in Australia. It's reasonable to assume that each capital city would have US import cars driving around, but to see only non Australian cars in a set shot, including all the extras in the background, begs the question. I didn't like this advert from the second I saw it, nothing against Simon. I don't know which market this was aimed at, but it's not for a 30 something white Aussie male. It's bogus.
this is why i love the internet!! i have hated this add since i first saw it... aus actor selling aus product in a sepo accent!!! drove me nuts!! thanks guys you made my day!!!
he's not even popular in australia, and he never actually says the name of the bank he's advertising. my conclusion: they bought an ad for an american bank and photoshopped ANZ's logo over the original banks
I think it was probably filmed here in Oz - the cars in the background are on the left-hand side of the street.
Maybe Simon Baker just talks with a Yank accent these days, out of habit from faking one all the time. But how is it supposed to make any difference to me what bank he uses? Stupid ad.
@stoomie1 Actually he switches back and forth sometimes, he talks Australian at home with his family but occasionally he throws in American words like 'ass' instead of 'arse'. :) He doesn't speak American on purpose unless he's filming.
Seriously who gives a frakin shiyet ? Yep, he's an actor... He gets paid to follow direction, get over it. The fact that Australia still broadcasts 'Neighbours' and 'Home and Away' should be far more insulting to ones sense of patriotism. A god damned loss to society.
I'm thinking you should search Youtube for the Euphoria song clip of 'love you right' from about 1991 and see Simon dancing with his shirt off, it's a good laugh.
I LOVE IT!!!!! I TOTALLY agree!! I mean, come on, really. He's Australian, and ok, he plays an american, but he's advertising an Australian bank!! ANZ, from the BEST ads (Barbara) to the WORST!! Thanks, mate, for posting this. Funny
But if he is advertising an Australian company why wouldn't they just use and Australian actor or him speaking in his natural accent? It's like that stupid ad for Brut deodorant with the voiceover in a faux American accent... why has this whole thing with using American accents in Aus and NZ ads become so popular? Makes me ill, do we not get enough American culture in society these days?
Filmed in the USA..just look at the cars in the street. It's a one way street, and you can tell they are driving on the wrong side of the road when you look at the intersection. Rubbish Ad, by a rubbish actor, from a rubbish show, filmed in a rubbish country. Only thing more crap is the fact ANZ paid somebody....which I find quite funny....in a rubbish sort of way :)
Geez, he's not making the commercial as Simon Baker, but as Patrick Jane. He's in character and it would be odd to have a character that already exist to speak with another accent. Probably owners of the show wouldn't even authorize to use the character and have him speaking differently. You can find another adds, interviews or whatever where he keeps his aussie accent. Including promos for the mentalist. Stop acting like babies.
@satiricalmiss No it´s not. You didn´t quite understand me. I´m aware of the line you´re refering to. The bank might made an inapropriate choice for the character but the character is an american and you don´t know how strictly companies can be with the image of the character, my point is that´s lame to blame Simon Baker for not keeping his accent, when any other video you see him speaking as HIMSELF (and not playing a character) he talks with his australian accent.
I understand though that some australians might like it though, but I saw it more as sketch using the character, so no really need to be offended. But I understand australians might thought weird the CHOICE. To blame the actor is kind childsh. There is a (american) video related to this one where he keeps his natural accent and as I said, he always keep it when he´s himself. Oh, and I´m not american neither australian for what might matter.
@mrmuricy1986 I, like you, had no intentions to offend anyone. While I think it's poor form for Simon Baker to agree to do an Australian ad with an American accent, when he should be well aware Australians would prefer to hear him with his natural accent, I recognise that it is the bank and advertising agency who are in control and that he is portraying a character.
@mrmuricy1986 Since it's his face in the ad, I think he should have had an issue with playing such a character for an Australian ad, it's his call at the end of the day, he has a choice.
@halo3dia But he's playing an American character. Why would that character have a bank account here? And we say "dumb arse" in Australia. Hope this helps.
you dont know what it stands for because you're an australian, and this whole add campaign is Simon Baker taking the piss, out of australians, because australians, are, quite frankly, australians, (enough said!) you're all a bunch of idiots, and you all prove it time and time again. long live simon bakers cock!!
@xxforyou23 because australians are just that shit, that even australians take the shit out of australians for being australians in australia, - that sounds much better
@2CHUNKADUBSTEP Seriously... What the hell is your problem? Taking time out to click on this video, to take the piss out of Australians, when you know the majority of viewers are Australians??? Are you that sad, pathetic and mean spirited? Get a life and keep your opinions to yourself.
@2CHUNKADUBSTEP Us Aussies are not idiots. At least most of us dont use commers after every few words. I really couldnt care what ANZ mean's all I know it's a bank that has a cool as Dalek in one of their offices...
@Ember1654 its fucking obvious what it stands for: Australia and New Zealand. Every time an aussie tries to stand up for themselves, they prove me right. idiot. and the comas add emphasis. You obviously don't understand, because you're an Australian, and lets be real, if you don't even know what ANZ means, how can you question my grammar. In fact! calling you an 'idiot' really doesn't do you any justice. I should replace every opportunity to use the word 'idiot' with 'Australian' Australian.
Thats weird - when he changed an accent, his voice also changed. Sounded like an other person...
