So that's what John Greely looks like. I've been curious ever since I became an Iced Earth fan about a year and a half ago or so. Google resulted in no images whatsoever.
Anyway, I prefer the Days of Purgatory version, Barlow > Greely. The only song I like on Night of the Stromrider better than the ones on Days of Purgatory is Stormrider, and Greely doesn't even sing that, Schaffer does.
Google resulted in no images of Gene Adam either. Anybody have a link to a video or pics of Gene Adam?
Fucking killer! "Night of the Stormrider" is easily one of I.E.'s best records. I happen to have it on vinyl (the version with the "flying frog" cover art by Axel before he did the third and final version that we all know and love). I'm a big fan of John Greely's vocal style. It had an "evil" sound to it and it fit "Night of the Stormrider" very well! The first time I heard the vocals at the beginning of "Travel In Stygian", it sent chills up my spine.
The way this song starts on the album is amazing too. It's got a sort of sitar effect going on, then it goes into the main riff. It's a shame they cut it off for the video.
Stormrider is without a doubt the coolest and darkest album ever made.
That's what I was thinking as well, the backing vocals sound way different on the cd. Could it be because the audio track for this video was taken from the original version, while I own the remastered versions of the early albums (the ones that have been avaiable since Dark Genesis came out)? Can anyone who owns the old version confirm this?
The original version sounds similar to this, but Greely's vocals sound different. I believe this was a live recording because even the guitars and bass sound different from the original. This is the best version of this song IMO.
I think it's partly live, you can hear three guitars at the same time, probably the rhythm guitar track from the album. I believe there are also some album vocals, but as you said, some of it sounds live. No matter what - it's great!
I love Greely's voice, check out his new project, Seventh Servant. The production is awful, but his voice is much more mature and, in my humble opinion, he sounds better than in IE. And for all those haters... Barlow = Greely ;)
Yeah I appologize. I must have worded it wrong, I get so used to oversaying things sometimes, I meant to say this is one of the only songs that personally I actually like by them for thier old school thrash sound. I'm not a big fan of most Power Metal just old school stuff like Sanctuary and Metal Church. Just my opinion of course, Iced Earth are good at what they do then and now.
No you're an idiot for saying this is pretty much the only good thing the band ever did. It's an awesome song... but this video version is shittier than the CD version... which is shittier than Barlow's version. So if you think THIS video is pretty much the only good thing they have ever done... you're an idiot
Honestly, druryrandomnumbers, I can't agree. At all. Night of the Stormrider is absolutely the best album they ever did, and although the Barlow stuff is good, Mr Schaffer's anal retentive need for perfection sissified everything after Burnt Offerings. Not saying it ain't good, but it sure as hell doesn't come close to the assripping evil of Travel in Fucking Stygian.
Yes Night of the Stormrider is one of if not the best Iced Earth albums. BUT listen to the original version then listen to the songs on Days in Purgatory. Barlow's versions of those songs are far suppirior... hands down. But hey atleast you aren't saying Owens > Barlow... now those people are idiots!
I've listened to Purgatory, I'm just not a big fan, I think the original vocalists fitted the raw, dark feeling better.
I think Owens is a terrific singer actually, but he's gotten shit parts in replacing first Halford then Barlow. And he did not fit Iced Earth's style of music, AT ALL.
Barlow is great, but his melodramatic sinigng can sometimes piss me off and btw he cant be compared to Greely[for Night Of The Stormrider!! Greely's voice is made for this!!dark atmosphere and its "evil"!!
Ye its seems to be true, but Barlow is also great singer. I like his singing as he did at covering Iron Maiden and Ac/Dc. Everybody has their own style but you cant change the past... you can only expect something new from future.
I wouldn't go so far as to say Barlow sounds melodramatic. Just maybe a little too emotional. Regardless, he has more power to his singing than Greely did. Some dudes will sing with feeling, and others are just doing their job.
Grab the audio from this song at tubepull doht cohm.
