Coming from three people that understand nothing about music it's easy to see why they wouldn't get progressive music. DT definitely requires patience. But it's worth the investment in time. There are some really complex and intertwining themes and melodies. Sometimes there are elements of songs from previous albums mixed into newer songs. The complexity is part of the fun of it all. I DO think they could benefit from a more aggressive singer though. That breathy, dainty 80s metal vocal style kind of kills it.

I love progressive metal, and I love long songs, but Dream Theater is HORRENDOUSLY boring. Jimmy really nailed it - just a bunch of show-offs. They're excellent musicians, but the songwriting is uninspiring and bland.

a good long song is dependant on how well they mix up the riffs, the same riffs over and over again is not good. Haven't given Dream Theater a good listen but am a huge fan of Porcupine Tree

dream theater is a great fuckin band. anyone who knows anything about playing rock/metal would agree. They can be a bit overly 'prog' especially the later stuff like 6 degrees, so they may not be to your taste, but they are very very talented.

Listen to the album Awake. My personal fav by them, its got a nice ratio of heavy to progressive. Plus i like the keyboardist on that album way better than the guy who replaced him.

In 1994 or so I thought "Hold Me Under" was really cool, like a metal version of Rush which I also loved then. I still kinda like that song. But in the late 90s I actually bought a Dream Theater album, and they are so fuckin PRETENTIOUS. It had like one good song, and then a bunch of really gay shit, and even the good song was kinda gay. That and the Soy Bomb thing, and their fruity music, and their fruity fans acting like Dream Theater is the best band ever when they ain't.

If you guys want some long songs, listen to Earth or Teeth of Lions Rule The Divine. There quite a few 20 and 30 minute songs to be had. There are almost never any vocals either.

Sunn O)) is another good band along those lines, but their songs are usually under 10 minutes and occasionally have some vocals.
