Thank you blattman. This is extraordinary. I will go over it again and again. I will also seek a transcript of it, to further comb through its many subtleties. (This is one of the greatest examples of how YouTube can be most intelligently used.) Thank you.
She is so smart and intellectual, so well spoken! It's hard to find singers in todays world that have that kind of intellect, same with the interviewer.
This intelligent beautiful Diva should've been a poet! Amazing! I'm not an opera lover but I could listen to her all day!! I understand that she speaks four languages fluently! WOW!
I remember being a child and my father used to talk about Maria Callas. He's right she's so divine...... All great opera sopranos should be DIVAS......
I will disagree with you on this and besides even beauty can be subjective. What can sound beautiful in my ears can sound irritating on yours and vice versa. And Schoenberg has written some 'beautiful' music too. Verklarte Nacht for example comes in mind...
I am going to quote the first 40 sec to anyone who listens! I consider myself knowledgeable and appreciative of classical music, but forever an outsider because of my views on Schoenbergien "music", the epiphany of perfection in the academic circles. Music after all is a structure of sound and the only thing that differentiates music from noise is beauty. Sound without beauty is not in the least deserving of being called music. Thank god for greats like Maria Callas and Sarah Chang who agree.
Every musician, including all singers and instrumentalists, whether professional or still a student, should listen to what Callas has to say and learn from it. She was an intelligent musician and artist, not just a singer.
Such intelligence and a depth of understanding of her art - I could listen to her for hours. She is fascinating. What a privilege and a joy to have these interviews to watch and savour!
I love her comments on the singer as musician, the use of beautiful costuming to engage the audience and cutting or adding of repetitions to heighten the emotional experience without wasting the audience's time- brilliant-
Maria Callas had it all. What a beautiful lady, what a magnificent presence. A real DIVA, we will never see another one like her. What an inspiration and a joy simply listening to her remarks and wisdom. I love this lady and I do not care about her flaws, her virtues were so huge that the balance comes as the best opera singer of all times. A great musician- actress - singer. Absolutely gorgeous and great. You can't ask for more. God Bless you always Mme Callas and thank you for everything.
