Dave wanted to record the new Foo Fighters album in his garage. But he hired Butch because (I feel) he ultimately didn't want it to sound that way...kind of like a safety net to give it SLICK appeal. If he REALLY wanted to bring the "garage sound" to "Wasting Light" AND keep it in the family, he should have hired Steve Albini.
@toastyplatters70 Wasting Light Is a phenomenal album! And the combination of people that were a part of it made it phenomenal. Buch was used cus they like his style”, they trusted him (being family). They used him for the Nevermind album, the album from the band that drew YOU to this interview, and made you a fan I presume. The fact that Wasting Light was recorded in a garage, is a testament to how accomplished the Foo Fighters and Butch. it still needs to project a good garage sound.
@sowutsurpoint I suppose I was looking for that unpolished appeal/ that they were just gonna throw up a few mics and record the entire band in the same room, with little sound reinforcement. The fact that the album sounds to me as if it could have been recorded in any pro studio is revealing of the excellent skills of Butch Vig, and a testimony to the relationship he has with the band.
@toastyplatters70 In the end they did everything they would have done in a full scale production facility. It's really probably less to do with how the album sounds, and more to do with Dave just not wanting to leave the house. ;)
@touretteEd2 more to the point, I would have expected Dave to go with a producer who has more of an ear for a stripped down, live garage-band sound, rather than a producer who tends to take a more glossy, technically slick sounding approach.
hearing that demo gave me a whole new appreciation for the song

@toastyplatters70 a Foo Fighters record recorded by Steve Albini is about as likely as...a Foo Fighters record recorded by Steve Albini
