  • It took her 5 minutes to get dressed...5 minutes every day over 50 years is 95 hours of labour dedicated solely to getting dressed. I'm exhausted just watching that.

  • do they make their own pins/////

  • Its unbearable. Its terrible. So many clothes, so many pins. It so unpractical, like a jail. Its so tide and fit, so hot. I'm getting more angry simply by thinking of it!!!

Thank God of Greece, our tradition is much, much, much more liberal than that!!

    -.

  • And did I mention what an unbearable oppression is that string around the neck!!

Thank God, no Greek would ever have come up with such an oppressive idea!!

    -.

  • dangggggggggggggg i feel sorry for yall havin to take all that time jus to DRESS! Seems like they make it as difficult as possibe lol

  • If you are swartzentrubers then you would not be making this video...

  • Oh wow that looks very uncomfortable and way too hot to wear during summer. I live in Florida and you would bake in that.

  • The separate sleeves must be a hold over from really old style dressing. Up to the mid-19th century, sleeves were often removable. They were buttoned on, or may hooked on. Probably easier to clean, repair or replace just sleeves than an entire garment.

  • They wear all this in the summer ?!

  • I don't know how you can get a restful sleep in such a tight bodice.

  • i would be so sweaty by the end of the day

  • do that have to be dressed that way in their own home? When the chores are done & the day is over & the women are sewing or reading in the evening are they allowed to be more comfortable or wear their hair down?

  • Wow - The dress looks so complicated!

  • this is really interesting and informative. thank you for posting!

  • how do they deal with theor monthly visitor with all those pins ?

  • Getting dressed seems like quite a chore, lol! I guess we're lucky to have buttons, zippers and such :0) Thx for the video

  • @coppelia2000 ...I think it is more of a sacrifice not having buttons zippers etc... thats something they do for God

  • Abusive and cultish.

  • Thank you very much for this video, I have always wondered what steps it took to dress as an Amish woman would.

  • I have always respected the Amish ways, and have always been intriqued by their lifestyle. I knew they didnt use buttons or zippers but did not realize the difficulty of getting dressed.

Also, I dont see how this video is being cruel to anyone as someone stated?!

  • I think this chick actually looks cute with a bonnet on her head.I enjoy seeing her her wear a bonnet.

  • From watching this video, I figured I would go insane if I were Amish. No zippers or buttons, only safety pins.

  • with a special amish like that are you german? sounds it

  • A large portion of the Amish came from Germany. The term, "Pennsylvania Dutch" over the years became a corruption of "Pennsylvania Deutsch".

  • No, they came from Switzerland and some the low countries, I believe.

  • Hi Ken, Yes, some did come from Switzerland and other places like Holland but the majority came from the Rhine and Palatine regions of Germany due to the Thirty Years war.

  • My understanding is that they originated in Switzerland and later moved into Germany to escape persecution before coming to North America.

  • Many of the Amish today still speak an old German dialect that is rare. The 30 years war, between the Catholics and Protestants, was the most destructive war in European history, hence many from those southern regions of Germany came to America to practice their religions in peace.

  • Right, they acquired the dialect spoken in the Palatinate region, but the Amish were originally Swiss-Germans.

  • Could you supply a resource for that information? From the books I've read, I did not know that the Amish started out in Switzerland then Germany then America.

  • Thanks for sharing this video. This looks very complicated. The Apostle Paul warns us about reliing on legalism in the book of Galations.

  • Raised in a very liberal part of California, and having traveled

extensively throughout the world over a long period of time -

I am proud of our Mennonite and Amish communities. May they grow and prosper !

  • They are nice people but it's not sinful to use technology. I prefer to use zippers on clothing.

  • DumbazzVideos: In case you didn't notice, I didn't make this video nor did I belong to an Amish group. Why you are attacking me is incomprehensible (need a dictionary?). I am proud of those who did choose a better life for themselves, no matter what their circumstances. What has gone on in some cults in our country (or others) should never be tolerated. People who break free must be commended for their courage.

Save your name-calling for someone else; perhaps the person you see in the mirror?

  • A straight pin at your throat: a constant reminder of what "might happen" if you try to "break free."

Thanks for posting these important videos. This seems more difficult and complicated than the Catholic nun's habit, bordering on the Taliban. God bless you in your work exposing the abuses of the Amish culture. The world has NO IDEA!

  • Abuses of the Amish culture? Bordering on the Taliban? I think it's fair to suggest that you educate yourself more on the Amish before you pass judgement; simply basing your opinions on spurious videos such as this simply speaks to the fact that you, like many others, are susceptable to propaganda much too easily...

  • is it against the ordnung to smile or laugh because i havent seen anyone do it

  • I think the Amish are very social and place much importance in family and friends, so in order to maintain such bonds one can't expect them to privately be as reserved as they appear to outsiders. I think there are some non-Amish denominations that were much more humourless than the Amish.

  • what do you do for periods?

  • AndreasAntoniusMaria : BabelFish translation (rough):

"They make the black-cloudy Amish ridiculous. That substantially suffering does to me. My mother is also a former black-cloudy Amish. Although my mother left the family, she has still that deepest respect for your used ones. Yes, the order rules for clothes are old fashionable and very much strict. That is bad?"

  • This is a very bad and incorrect translation. You can use Babelfish for translating words but when you start to translate sentences you get a terrible translation. I used German because the Old Order and Schwarzentrueber use a kind of German. My remarks were ment for them. I will give a better translation.

  • AndreasAntoniusMaria : I agree, BabelFish is a very "rough" translation device, but I don't know of any other. I didn't realize your remarks were meant only for "them."

Thank you for your correction, and if I could delete my comment I would, but I can't. Perhaps the video director will. Thank you for saying you will post a better translation.

  • You make the Schwarzentrueber Amish look ridiculous. That really hurts me! My mother is also a former Schwarzentrueber Amish who went away from her family. But she still has the deepest respect for her relatives.Yes, the Ordnung rules for clothes are oldfashioned and very strict. What is wrong with that?

  • AndreasAntoniusMaria: Thank you for the correct translation. I would like to say that this video does not make anyone look "ridiculous," it is just showing people what things are like. What I find sad are some of the other things going on, but there's nothing in this video to be ashamed of or hurt by. I respect good people everywhere, however they dress, and so do many others. Thanks for the correct translation.

  • ooookay. first of all...i grew up amish and in most communities they don't go thru all that pin bullshit to get dressed. the accent was awful and told me she grew up in a total diff environment than the average amish do. everytime people do research on the amish they always pick the wrong community which makes it look worse. all i can say is dont believe everything u hear. not nearly all the amish have the same lifestyles!!!!

  • How very useful these videos to document this lifestyle visually!

Perhaps your husband could show his outfit, such as the drop-front trousers, or the lack of an undershirt + vest, as well as his Sunday hat. Are there ways or restrictions as to how to carry a bible? Who carries/reads a bible on Sunday...is it all the congregation, or only the preacher?

  • Are you New Order Amish that you can post a video? Are the sleeves of the dress separate to help with keeping things clean? Are other (Old Order, Randy Miller, Nebraska) Amish dresses as complicated?

    thanks for posting the video!

  • The title of the video says what they (supposedly) are.

  • what they WERE

  • If they "WERE" then why does it say "Swartzentruber Amish..." instead of "Former Swartzentruber Amish..." or some other indication of past tense????

  • Ask them. I am former Swartzentruber Amish myself.

  • Fair enough. But I'm not sure that these people are/were Amish. She kind of comes across like she is/was, but the other guy doesn't...

  • Well actually I can tell you that they were cause he is my mom's 2nd cousin.

  • don't they get hot?

  • That was an education! Thanks. I didn't know it was so complicated and layered, with so many pins. Looks like that would make it difficult to move freely and comfortably.

  • How on earth do you avoid sticking yourself with all those pins? And who comes up with the measurements? I can't see a bunch of older men sitting around saying that 5/8's of an inch is modest/plain and 3/8's isn't. I'm just wondering.

  • Thanks for showing us this. I grew up close to an Amish community but never got to know anyone in that church, so I had no idea how the people lived on any intimate level. I would love to know as much as you are comfortable sharing.

  • Isn't a webcam against your Amish beliefs?

  • thanks for sharing that...my grandparents were Amish but I never got to see anyone get dressed before. I couldn't help wondering if you've ever tried to get through airport security with all those safety pins, lol.

  • CliffkFF. You are quiet welcome. It is sure a task if you are not used to getting dressed that way everyday. Sometimes those straight pins have a mind of their own, ouch, lol. And no I have never tried to go through airport security. It could be very intresting.

  • RVance.I guess you will have to wait and see. And, yes since you live closer again I will gladly teach you how to cook.

  • erra. Yes what I would have given to be able to wear a dress made by the more liberal Amish. I (Fran) have a sister who is from the more liberal. She left the Swartzentruber Amish when she was a teenager and she has a beautiful family.

  • KateHastings. In response to your comment on the nursing. Yes it can be a real challenge. But like most of Amish women after having 6 or 12 kids I guess they get to be pro's at it. They start by undoing the side of the cape in which they want to nurse on, and than undo the dress underneath the cape, that gives them a big enough opening and lets them use the cape as a privacy cover. This is usually done in a bedroom away from a crowd, such as in church.

  • So, what video is next mother ?? Will you teach me how to cook again? hehee i love you! see u soon!

  • that's really neat!! thanks for sharing. Now i know how to put on my Amish dress!!haha=]

  • Thank you for explaining the dress! Your ordnung is new to me, so I was curious. It seems that nursing a baby would be a real production in that dress.

  • That looks like a lot of work getting dressed. I own an Amish dress, but it is from one of the more liberal groups and is much easier to get into. It is one piece with an attached cape, and it has snaps in the front.
