@nkuajsuab keep working on it. I'd recommend keeping your camera on aperture priority mode and make sure you bring it with you when you go out (never know when you see something cool that you want to take a pic of). You'll need to learn how to use ISO setting, shutter speed, aperture and white balance. Remember that you have the luxury of previewing your pictures so if it didn't come out the way you wanted it to you can try again with some different settings,
I have had my S90 for about 2 months and while it is a great camera, some design has trumped common sense: [1] the case is VERY slippery and there are no non-slip patches on it to prevent falling out of your hands; [2] the wrist strap is so big that an elephant could swim through it - again - the camera could tumble to the ground. [3] the flash pop-up is DIRECTLY under the natural place where the top-right corner is held - what's with that? [4] no case came with, unlike my old 4MP Elph!
I'd have to agree with all of your comments. Recently another youtube viewer told me that Canon released a S95 (2nd gen model) which seems to have addressed #1 and #3, not sure about the other two though. I'd urge anyone considering a S90 to look at the S95 first as it seems to be an improvement in key ergonomics/industrial design issues.
@bcsarmaa Thanks for this - and the S95 looks to have made a couple of improvements as you point out, but its stiff competition seems to be the Panasonic Lumix LX5. Just released last month; I might have gone for it instead of the S90.
I don't own a G11 so I can't give you a direct review. I would suggest you check out some camera review sites that have tested both cameras. If you don't mind the additional size then the G11 is a good camera, you'll have a longer zoom range for sure.
Having said that the big advantage of the S90 is better low light (f2.0 aperture) and smaller size. For me it was a no-brainer to get the S90. Talk to some G11 owners and see what they say.
I don't own a G11 so I can't give you a direct review. It would be unfair for me to say anything negative about a product I have not even tried myself. I would suggest you check out some camera review sites that have tested both cameras. If you don't mind the additional size then the G11 is a good camera, you'll have a longer zoom range for sure.
Definitely ask some some G11 owners for their opinions on their camera.
Can someone tell me why HD video would be better than this cameras video if the video I see from this camera looks better than the HD videos I've seen from other pocket cams on youtube? What's the advantage of HD? Will HD look better on TV when burned to DVD? Sorry, I don't know much about cameras & I'm trying to decide between the Canon S90 & Sony TX7. I appreciate anyone's help.
@P3RSIANpinoy I bought my Canon S90 @ Best Buy store here in New Jersey. That's all I bring with me. All my youtube and multiply posting were taken by it nd I m so happy !
Hi I've read up on aperture f.stop etc. but please could you just confirm for me, can you take photos with the subject in clear focus and a blurred background? Would really appreciate an answer :)
Yes you can, I have an example here on my blog (see address in the description of this movie - this is the pic with kitchen spoons in the foreground).
Having a large aperture helps for this, so the f2.0 lens (at wide angle) really helps.
To maximize the blur you want to keep your subject far away from your background. Let's say you are shooting your subject against a building. The more distance between the subject the building behind him/her - the more blur.
btw BCSARMAA... ur vids are great and don't change a thing... I like them how they are, but don't give me this "too little time to learn iMovie"... If you can figure out how that canon camera works, you can figure out iMovie. It will take you about... ohhhhhh.... 10 minutes.
220 shots is what it is rated at. This will change depending on how much you use the LCD and if you use the flash frequently. Personally I've found that I can go through a battery within a day or two. I would suspect that if I took this camera with me on vacation I'd easily run out of juice within a day.
I definitely recommend buying a spare battery, You can get the NB-6L cheap if you buy a third party brand from Amazon (I paid $3.45/battery)
It's not really possible to answer in a specific way because it depends on LCD usage and the amount of flash you use.
The best way to gauge is to take the 220 shots as a guide number and think about how you typically shoot. Do you usually take more or less than 200 shots in a session? Do you use the flash a lot?
Do you find yourself looking through your pics a lot after taking them (play mode)? All of this affects battery life.
220 shots is a start, that number goes down with more use.
Great review, it's a shame your video equipment isn't able to do the screen justice; I've seen some higher quality videos of the screen, and I must say it looks excellent.
The depth of your review is really good for me; I found the other reviews out there to be too shallow ;-)
The two click-rings seem to be perfect to get a grip on the most important settings, which is the most important thing for me.
I'm looking forward to seeing some of your pics and to get my camera, of course!
Thanks for the compliment. As you can see I adlib my reviews and do it all in one take (lack of video editing software and too little time to learn iMovie)...
I actually recorded the second video on my camcorder but I'm not able to upload it to the computer, so I had to re-do the thing on the MacBook...
Once I figure out what is going on I'll upload the video and get it linked to this one...
great review. thanks for taking the time to make this video. it has been really helpful. Just like to ask if it's possible to control the aperture by using the ring in front while controlling the shutter speed with the ring at the back? read ken rockwell's review and i think he stated that the s90 can be programed to do that. Also, how's the lowlight capabilities of this camera. i'm choosing between s90 and lx3. thanks
You actually described exactly how the standard manual control setting works on the camera. Out of the box, when you turn the program dial to "M", the front ring controls the aperture and the back ring controls the shutter speed.
So there is nothing to adjust (I was wondering about that too before getting the camera).
After setting those controls, if you wanted to adjust white balance, you could hit the "ring function" button, select white balance and use the front ring to set that.
I've taken some low light pics and I'll have them posted shortly... I'm a bit of a procrastinator but I'm hoping to get my blog post up later today. I'll be linking the vid to the pics so you can review.
In terms of comparison to the LX3, there is a guy on the dpreview forum that did a in-depth comparison of these two camera's and the resulting pics.
I'm still having a hard time using my S90 ur good with this camera

Looking forward to you reviewing the S95. One of the deal breaker with the S90 is the short battery life. Is it the same with the S95? tnx.

Great review brother but please try to cut out the 'UMM' crutch word used after the end of nearly every sentence. Information was great, thanks

I know, it makes me cringe.
I took a public speaking course back in college, if I remember correctly taking a pause helps get over the "umm" problem.
Something to work on...

@bcsarmaa I didn't notice any UMMs until you mentioned it now that's all I can hear.
