  • Why is this fella doing a Christian inspired hammer rite? It's about as credible as reading runes for divination.

  • fake

  • @pgv11 That was the Hammer Rite.

  • @NorseHeathengirl2345 Yes you do believe in G-d. G-d and Odin are the same word family. The word God is derived from the proto-germanic root *ǥuđán which is the origin of the name Odin. Odin has many names my friend - I suggest you learn a few of them so that you do not deny him. May Asatru live forever!

  • Daviciacus seems to be right... I am from Brazil, and I do the entire rituals using portuguese (my mother language), except when using runes, or special words, I think I can do it in english too, but whats the point to use english in a ritual? I use mage robes too, but its because a special situation requires special clothes, whats the problem? The actual media made some ceremonial objects and cothes become famous and labelad like child games... we dont need to change and lost the origins

  • Any chance of a translation? I can make out some of it from my knowledge of Old English, but I'm interested to know the rest :)

  • Is this for Thorensblót?

  • I'm sorry if I offend anybody (because there usually are offended people) but i laughed at the ending of this video. I'm just starting to practice Asatru and I respect all sorts of rituals but the sudden shouting just got me. >_<

  • @shakama2 the fact is man is that it is funny "beware the god that cannot laugh"

  • scribd (dot) com/nb812

  • halló krakkar mjög innaccurate trúarlega im saddend þessi Óðinn eins og þú reynir að skikkjur eru mjög rediculas og þú ert faking a Norse hreim él Óðinn él bræður mínir

  • @wolvenblacktalon1 I'm not complete sure, but i understood some of the things you said. This is performed by Dutch people. And we Dutch are as much involved to the Germanic tribe as you icelandic person. Why should we not be allowed to pray to our gods? Give me one good reason!

  • @Metaldude1945 no thats not what im saying the scandinavian accent was just weird im from noway bro and i know the accent

  • @wolvenblacktalon1 I agree that we should use more of a Dutch accent to it. Sometimes we already have own words for them, but we don't use them cause they're not as known. We have our own word for Mjölnir which is maalder, Midgaard, we should pronounse the g as a Dutch 'g' and not a 'g' as in other langueges. Perhaps call Midgaard Middengaard or Middentuin,...etc. But we must also not forget our unity!

  • I'm new to all of this and wish that the title reflected the ritual being performed. My understanding of my study, mind you I just started my 24 day reflection of the runes, is that this is a cleansing ritual prior to a Blot. Is this correct?

  • @DuescherStoltz My mother is from Delft, Netherlands, my father was born in Maria Alm, Austria and raised in Munich, Germany. I heard Dutch being spoken when I was a child and I agree, native Dutch speakers usually speak Dutch better than others, but I still don't understand why you commented on the "bad accent" of the people in the video who are speaking Dutch. According to Daviciacus who posted this video, the people in the video ARE Dutch, performing this ritual in the Netherlands.

  • @DuescherStoltz What accent is a "bit much"? They are speaking DUTCH.

  • Someone should really create a holy book for Asatru, although it may seem like a copy of the cristian religous format it would really be helpful to have verses to read and remember in stead of having to make things up, I don't know how strong the youtube asatrian comunity is but we could create a website in which we could bind our own religous guidlines.

  • @Nibus2 There are books of Asatru rituals available that different groups use. Google "Asatru Ritual Books" and you'll see several. It's equally traditional in Asatru rituals for people to use a specified ritual framework, but with spontaneous (not memorized) prayers, oaths, etc., and there's evidence that the ancients prayed as the Gods moved them as well.

    - Hans

  • @Nibus2 Read the Edda lol. Read ring of the Nibelungs, Read the Hildebrandslied. That is actually what is great about our religion! We have much more to say than christianity! Christianity often is just one book, we have a lot of literature.

  • Christians do it, sure, but do Heathens really want to act like Christians? I find this whole "Viking warrior spirit, we need to act like the ancients" attitude foolish. This isn't Viking Age Iceland, so why act like it is.

  • Although HoundofOdin's comment was made over a year ago i do agree. The only reason it is still done in this fashion is because the christianized world even to this day still tries to push us out of the mainstream which makes us feel akward about it and so we don't express it freely.

  • Nice Video

  • rituals sound pathetic in english. and other languages sound pathetic with english accent.that's a fact.

  • @darkmagicofhell "Pathetic in English"? A "fact"? Tell that to the many who base their honoring of the Gods of Asgard and Vannheim on Anglo Saxon heritage, or who believe that the Gods should be honored in the language of the people doing the honoring. Read up on the history of the English language. Centuries ago, people living in what is now Great Britain, Scandinavia, and Germany, understood each other quite well. English is hardly a new language.

  • @lichtbroeder Thats not correct at all, when the Danish invaded angolo Saxon england in the late 9th century they could not understand each other at all, eventually the danish and the angolo saxons became interbred and so did the language, Also though the english of that day is nothing like the english of today, 0% chance of a modern english person being able to understand a angolo Saxon person.

  • @Nibus2 Dutch, Swedish, German, English, etc. are Germanic languages sharing common roots. West Germanic invaders from Jutland and southern Denmark: the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, began to settle in the British Isles in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. They spoke a mutually intelligible language, similar to modern Frisian - the language of the northeastern region of the Netherlands - that is called Old English. These people did understand each other as their languages were similar at that time.

  • Houndofodin,, You are so wrong,, What seems corny to you is the awakening of our Ancestors in todays relm,,

  • @omor01

I'm going to have to agree and disagree at the same time. Parts of me find it really interesting that we are beginning to learn everything about our old ways and to express it in the ways they did make it even more spiritual. On the other hand the allfather teaches us to accept change and to move with the flow of the world. If it's to be that this way of worship is corny then it may need to be so.

  • Thanks for sharing.

Must post up some of our warding rites as a comparison. We dont always invoke Thor and tend to speak freely from the heart rather than keep using the same words.

With regard to robes - almost every religion uses some form of historical dress so I dont see why Heathens cant too //if// they feel the urge. I certainly do but other members of my kindred prefer modern clothing.

The tales of Icelandic seithr women suggest that elaborate clothiing was important.

    Wassail

  • I don't think it's required to speak any particular languige in the blot, but it is a good way to honor those who came before. Be they ancestors of blood, or simply of faith.

  • i usually speak my own language or an old dialect

  • I'm told that the demigods are vastly superior in intelligence to us, they can read our minds, and whatever language you speak, they can speak it or learn it in seconds.

  • There is no need to use any special language other than your own. The ancestors used thier common tongue in thier religious practice, thus if you want to use your native tongue that is fine to. That said if you want to speak in a different language that is fine to :)

  • Ah, Interesting... the ritual language... is in Dutch.

  • nope, old Norse from which modern dutch is derived. the hammer hallowing is typically spoken in old Norse and the rest of the blôt is spoken in a mixture of English and occasionally norse

  • indeed its just our common language. personally i speak saxon dialect

  • I think there is room for many types of ritual as long as they are based in tradition and faith. It's hard with so little existing since the Christian memory wipe.

  • nicest thing i haw heard all year.. FUCK CHRISTIANITY!!!

heh and we dident now that the earth was round up too about the 16 century,.. som people need too open ther eyes...

  • hm.

  • The Hammer rite has no historical founding.

It is usually attributed to Edred Thorsson who is an Odian.

Not all Asatruar hold to the Blot formula presented in the video.

  • No. German Wikipedia says, that Thors/Donars hammer Mjölnir was realy a sign of himself in the history.

Wikipedia says, that people have found amulets of Mjölnir of the 9th or 10th century.

  • Yes, the symbol of Mjolnir is historically correct.

But the rite is not,the Hammer Rite is an adaption from Ceremonial Magic and Wicca for creating sacred space.

I wish people would read before typing or at least use reading comprehension first.

  • O, sorry, I am from Germany, and I didn't know what rite means. Now I know it: It means

    Ritus or Ritual in German.

  • No,I should apologize.

When I wrote that I was in a shitty mood and it's not your fault.

  • hundulf

our religion is not just everything in the Lore. It is a living growing religion and so it goes that new things would be incorperated into it today.

  • So you speak for all the branches of Heathenry with this statement?I know quite a few recons that would take issue with that.

I also stated not all Asatruar would hold to this structure, but here you are telling me they do by using "our religion".

Just because you see no issue mixing Wiccan elements doesn't mean others follow your fallacy.

  • agrred the hammer hallowing (which is done at almost all the heathen blots im been to) has now histroical founding. it is presented by thorsson in "the book of troth" and is just a wy for heathens to make hallow the ground used for the ritual. also i have never seen anybody from the kindred i attend dress up in garb to do blot, find that a little odd but whatever.

  • But I also see no harm in learning other languages, like Danish and whatnot. Expands the mind. Is there a way someone can do a translation of what he said?

By the way, I'm a red-haired American of Scot/Irish/English and German ancestry. I sure hope no one minds if I worship the Gods. If they do, oh well, I'm not going to stop until the Gods tell me to.

  • I don't mean any offense to the gods by saying this, but this just looks foolish. The fake Norse accent and robes make us look ridiculous. If we want Asatru to be taken seriously, we need to stop using the fake Norse accents, dress in formal modern day clothing, and speak in English. We are not Viking Age Icelanders, so we shouldn't try to dress and talk like them. We need to stop acting like role-playing gamers and start acting like a serious religious organization.

  • To stop faking Norse accents, one needs to start faking them first. There is no Norse used here, accent or otherwise, only Dutch because that is the mother language of the people involved. Why should they do it in English, if Dutch is their first language?

  • I just meant we need to stop speaking Old Norse, which most people can't understand, and dress in modern clothing during blots. English is my first language, so it's the first one that came to mind. Asatru is a modern day religion. We don't need to act like we live during the Viking Age during blots to honor the gods. Performing blots in this way just makes us look silly.

  • @Daviciacus He has just no idea. ;D

  • @Daviciacus

Kind of owned, in the whole "this is the language we were using" sense. However, the "modern- day dress" issue is relevant. I know (please trust me) that the fact that wearing clothing that most closely resembles those of our ancestors is relevant. However, our ancestors were a progressive people. I cannot be a part of a kindred where I am at, because the people that form various kindred's are rednecks, dressed like crap, generally not respectable. Dammit, I am a RESPECTABLE

  • @WTAdair I agree with you. Though unnecessary, traditional dress in ritual can visually connect us to ancestors and to one another. It symbolizes heritage, culture, continuity, etc. If people understand this in the context of an non-religious Octoberfest, how much more appropriate for a blot or other occasion. The ancestors valued that which came before. This is what "religion" means. To "re-connect" to what came before - to the Gods, to the ancestors, and by doing so, to each other.

  • @Daviciacus It is funny when Dutch people are attacked for doing Blottir in Dutch.

  • @WyattKaldenberg It is often forgotten that Flanders and the Netherlands are Germanic people too. Even the English are sometimes forgotten. Some scandinavians are even trying to claim the religion is only theirs. They forgot that we share comon roots though. We are all Germanic. We western Germanics just had bad luck with our leaders...

  • @Metaldude1945 I am an American of Dutch, German and English decent. I know what jackasses a lot of Scandinavians are. I am Germanic. I use the word Odinism, because it is modern English. I don't use the word Asatru, because it is too Scandinavian sounding. I pronounce the names of the Gods with American English, because I don't want anything to do with those people.

  • @WyattKaldenberg Well i said that some scandinavians do that, but i do hate it when they do it, like when they want to exclude us.

  • @WyattKaldenberg Odinism is pretty much following Odin's teachings, Asatru is the whole package of Aesir-gods, thought I'd let you know. ;)

  • @Metaldude1945 really? that makes me so relieved. I'm half german and I was not sure if germans were norse. I always assumed it cause of germany being right below finland, sweden and denmark. But was never 100% sure. ty :)

  • @shakama2 What is your other half lol? And Norse is just an old word for Norwegian lol. The following present day people are of Germanic descent: Flemings(Dutch languaged Belgians), Dutch people, Frysians, Englishmen(not scots, welshmen and irish), Germans, Austrians, German languaged Swiss, Liechtenstein, Luxembourgs, Danes, Swedes, Norwegians, Icelanders and Faroese people. Those people belong to the branch of Germanic people.

  • @Daviciacus agreed but he dosnt hear the difference for him it could be icelandic

  • Just so you know, Old Norse is almost identical from Icelandic, and those who understand and can read Icelandic can read, without any trouble, the old sagas in the original language. So by saying we need to stop speaking Old Norse, you're telling an entire country to stop speaking their language.

  • No, I'm telling Asatruars from Alabama to stop trying to talk like Viking Age Icelanders. Speak in your regular voice in your preffered language.

  • Well, considering that English is mostly a Germanic language anyway, no harm in using English as a liturgical language.

Let's not be Catholic, eh, and get hung up on using Latin, right?

  • Your perspective isnt the only one. Using the ancient North tongue connects us in a very tangible way to our ancestors. It honors them, and it serves a psycho-spiritual purpose too. Hammer Warding is nearly always done in Old Norse. Ive done this same Rite many times in Norse. Engish and Dutch, and each was equally effective and powerful if done correctly.

When I use the ancient tongue I always explain at some point in the Blot what the ancestral words mean.

  • If people want to say everything in Old Norse at home, that's fine, but it's not the ONLY way to do things as some people seem to think. When people do a big public rite, it should be in whatever the first language of the majority of people there, so everyone knows what's going on during the rite.

  • Who are you to make up rules for what other people should do?

Nobody speaks Old Norse at home. This is jsut a 2 min section of a larger rite. 98% of any Blot is in the native language of those participating. The only Norse would be in the Hammer Warding. There are good reasons why we would use that tongue as it is the language of the Gods whom are being invoked. I always explain what the words mean before I begin the Blot. The Gods and ancestors are honored by our respect for their tongue.

  • I agree that using old Norse or other old Germanic language is a good way to honor our ansestors. I would doybt though if the gods, being energies would be limited by the material variable of linguistics.

  • @HoundofOdin but the cloth makes me fee lcloser to the traditions and to my roots so waths wrong with it christians also wear robes and loo kat muslims

  • @HoundofOdin Of course, but also, it is important to remeber our great traditions, because otherwise, we might forget it, and fall into same trap Christians has fallen ages ago. I truly believe Odin will lead us and show us the way. Patience, Brother!

  • I AM FROM BRAZIL AND FULLY AGREE WITH YOU

  • I AM FROM BRAZIL AND FULLY AGREE WITH YOU

  • @HoundofOdin I agree, but keep in mind that some Heathens wear viking clothing or wear weapons because it connects them to their ancestors, a big part of Asatru. it also relates to the thriving days of Asatru, the viking age. I enjoy wearing Medieval clothing and wearing a blade when i practice asatru rituals, but that is also because i enjoy medieval role playing and LARPing. just because somone wears such things while associating with Asatru does not mean they are faking it or foolish.

  • @HoundofOdin

thats not a " Fake norse accent" its dutch...

  • I am an Asatruar, and I see nothing wrong with wearing Viking Age clothing or weapons in a blot or sumble. It is more conducive to what we are trying to do and it is a good way to honor the ancestors. Nothing wrong with adding to the ceremonial feel of it all. It's not like we dress like that all the time.

  • Unfortunately, some do. Those are the ones who make us look crazy.

  • This is bullshit. The original people that colonized Scandinavia had dark hair and eyes. Same people moved all over europe. The blonde and the blue eyes is a caracter that evolved AFTER the colonization. What is important is the genetic heritage, not the blond hair. Afterall the blond hair and the blue eyes are recessive caracters, wich means that are goin to completely disappear. All people that is pure European have the same genetic heritage.

  • you don't have to be Scandinavian to worship the Norse gods. the Germanic tribes worshiped gods very similar. plus, all the Germanic tribes at one point or another came from Scandinavia.

  • Whats up FUCKBOY? You think you're tough dont you. Use the internet to spew filth about a RELIGION that is as old as RECORDED HISTORY takes us. HOW DARE YOU mock a fucking RELIGION YOU SPIELESS PIECE OF NON EXISTENT SHIT!!

  • I agree, but the public does need to see that we are NOT racists, we are a religion. Hailsa! by the way

  • o so true

  • what asatru group is this?

  • why he speak a hibrid language???

  • what languaage is thisÞ

  • Wow... you have a pretty mouth... o.O

  • I hope you get raped by a clown

  • He man keep your foolish words to yourself!!

  • Just another fucking troll, I see. Burn yourself, asshole! Fuck, quit wasting my time & just die. Prick.

  • Interesting indeed. At first I found this way of performing the ritual strange. But if it works for him (them), that's fine! Nice to see how different people practice Asatru differently :)

  • Very interesting! First time I've seen magic from a norse perspective...I liked it!

We have an Asertro group where I live. Is it normal for these groups to practice Norse magic or is it just a few of them?

  • Donar, Thunderer, Powerful Asa in the North,

    Consecrate and maintain this (?)

    Mjolner's power guards Midgard.

    and then...

Donar, Thunderer, Fear of the Frost Giants,

    Donar, Thunderer, (?)'s fate

    Donar, Thunderer, (?)'s enemy

    Asator, above us, powerful warrior,

    Donar, earth son

    THOR!

  • I don't know what the first questionmark stads for, but it's "Hrungnir's fate" and "Jörmungandr's (the name of the world sepent) enemy"

  • I don't know the full translation of some words, so I put a question mark instead. Maybe someone else can complete it?

  • donar? is that whats his name in germany or holland or where it is? the norse name is Tor

  • Donar is simply another name of Thor, it all depends on which Germanic tribe you talk about, but in the end it's the same God. You can also compare Odin and Woden.

  • @Daviciacus You can't compare, they're just exactly the same lol.

  • The language that he speaks is in fact Dutch. Translated, he says:

    "Donar, Thunderer"

    "Mjolner's power guards over Midgard"

  • Wohoo I understood! It is a bit like Swedish

  • Donnar, tondrar, Rune.../Ase/Jormungand/etc. heilig (holy), in det haus... Mjölnirs Macht wacht uber Midgard...

I can't tell what language it is. The pronunciation sounds way to American, though. Not a bit trace of non-American Germanic traces, (Norwegian, Dutch, German, Icelandic, Swedish, Frisian, Danish, etc.)

  • first off,as a few other responders,i only knew some of the words spoken, but in all fairness,i only know english fluently. second...i thought the ritual was fine, our hof performs the rites in a similar way. thirdly, and most important.....any true believer in asatru, should not critisize other asatruar, for their specific way of practice. each tribe has its own individual ways, that make it different from the neihboring tribe.

  • wicca tru?

  • THORRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ^_^

  • I Only understand "Donar, Donnerer" at the beginning and "Mjölnirs Macht wacht über Midgard" at the end.

  • What's he saying? Sounds like some weird pronunciation of Old Frisian.

  • awesome
