@1ownjoo2 Uncle of mine had a 5.9 durango slt, it was full of issues, friend i know has a 99 5.2 grand cherokee, he said it ran strong but i would have to check back in w/ him on that and yeah, they practically are the same motors.
@UBConquered Not sure what you mean by that though, the transmission is a lot stronger than the 44RE in the 5.2's and my 5.9 engine is at 200,000 miles now with NO issues at all, great oil pressure and still does 0-60 as it did brand new.. my rusty rear hatch is my only concern, really! =S Which is no biggy, ill get a new hatch for 100 bucks.
@Dotchetter I'm pretty sure it was an 01, all the problems that happened during the 5 years he owned it was it needed a new clutch, needed 2 new pistons, he had to replace the plenum pan twice, needed new ball joints, reverse quit, and the lifters ticked badly. Plenum pan destruction was a common problem for the magnum motors, and Durango's were famous for eating through ball joints.

not shitting you, i saw this video and it made me feel sick, i hate (with a passion) seeing good cars be destroyed by dumb fucks that dont know how to take care of them also, here's what i figured from this program... people have cars worth 2k, they trade them in and get 4.5k in rebates at most now they are paying three times as much in insurance, $300 a month and owe $20000 on the new car they just purchased... how the fuck is this supposed to help the little guy again? most people dont........

Yea i know what your saying im 25 now and i was driving my mom's 4.0 98 grand and when i bought my first Vehicle like 2 years ago this was like 5 months ago cash for clunkers.... The 5.9 i bought was $5300 !!.. altho mine had a newer paint job, interior was in like new condition.. ZERO rust underside.. and only 118k miles. I could have a got a cheaper one for like $3500 but it had around 150-160k miles on it.
Granted i've had to do a few repairs to it like the waterpump ect
@1ownjoo2 Mine's got 200,000 miles on it, no issues what so ever.. tranny shifts fine, doesnt slip, i did a 0-60 test recently (The car's been floored like 3 times since NEW... it' a neck-snapping acceleration just halfway down!) - and it's still doing 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, completely stock except for a steel bumper with a winch, which is in total like 120+ kgs... engine is spry, quick and healthy with plenty of oil pressure and it's running cool too. It's been very good taken care of. ---->
----> - on the rust side of things.. well my rear hatch has some rust in the lower left part of it which I've fixed my self but it keeps coming back.. the hood is rusting too but my fix seems to be working better on the hood. Nevertheless, I'm replacing both the hatch and the hood anyways!
My passenger side rocker panel has some rust which will be replaced soon, I've found a guy that will do the job. Look behind those plastic rocker panel covers - they hide rust!!
The rust on the hatch is inside the door. My 5.9 has the same problem, paint over it with touchup paint and it comes back. The problem is the rear sprayer nozzle on the top of the hatch. You have to pull it off and seal it up with RTV or something, because the old rubber seal on it is cracked from time and is letting rain water inside.
@1ownjoo2 Really? THAT's the cause? I'd never figure that out... but it makes sense, my hatch hasn't got a single paint scratch or dents so the rust has to come from the inside. Well that hatch is long gone.. it looks great now though with my fix, but ill replace it when it rots out completely. Then, I'll do the RTV seal around the sprayer!
Yea for me its not really that bad. Lift the hatch up and you really have to look for the rust, its like peeking out in 2 spots that are maybe half an inch long. I imagine is probably worse inside tho, But its nowhere near bad enough to replace the hatch. Maybe if it starts to show through but i doubt that would happen any time soon.
Other spots you gatta be carefull off are the plastic rockers by the doors that plastic cladding down there can hide a lot of rust

had a 5.2L 4" lift/33" and decided i want more ( 6" on 35" tires) so if i was to spend that much it would be on the king aka 5.9L. i loved my 5.2 it was my baby, but it didnt take long for me to fall in love with my new 5.9 even stock it was the new love of my life. what a waste of a special truck, i understand its for the environment but this isnt a 98 4runner or blazer its the 5.9 15k ever made grand. if i ever find this guy ill pour that bottle down his throat and make him run till he dies.

i dunno about 600k lol i own a 5.9 and i doubt itll go to 600k.. Maybe 300-350 without needing some serious rebuild's. Its got 130k now and i've already had to fix the plenum, and the entire cooling system. Its got great compression still tho

This was such a waste. I have a 5.2 318 Grand thath has 350,000 miles on it, and a 98 5.9 that I would never ever in my life get rid of. The 5.9 is a collector vehicle. If it costs $13k every 5 years to pay the gas for a 5.9 at current gas prices, then that means for a hybrid to pay itself off, it would take 10 years. If you spent 36k with gas and a new price tag paying that off after 5 years. Over 13k in gas after 5 years, 5x2 =26k, so actually you would have to own a hybrid for 14 years to equal owning a 14mpg V8 lol
Well i guess positive side to this is it will go to a junkyard and some other 5.9 owner will be able to find that rare grill that he broke on him, or the sidepanels or bumper covers, and the hoodlouvers and roof rack ect...

Most people turned in Jeeps because of the MPG they get better mpg vehicles and new ones.. If they cant afford the gas then what makes em think they can afford a car payment AND gas ? Lets factor in a 20-30k Hybrid that gets 30-40mpg av, 1k miles a month $400-600 car payment.. After 5 years thats $30k, now gas $99 a month, 5 years thats $36k totall. A 5.9 getting 13-14mpg av after 5 years on premium that is $13k after 5 years. Its cheaper to own a gas guzzler then a hybrid.

went to the junkyard yesterday for a filler neck, mine was rusted. Isaw 2 of these 5.9s gutted sitting side by side, one silver and one black. not a speck of rust on either one. doesnt seem fair all these nice clean jeeps in better shape than what i have being scrapped. I wouldnt be suprised if a couple hundred of these 5.9jeeps across the country bit the dust during this program.
even if it was burning oil they could have pulled out the motor rebuilt it and stroked it to 6.7l. they have kits. it may not have been burning oil, it may just have been running rich from sitting for a while, its battery was dead.and i bet having water and glue in the crankcase rather than oil doesnt help much.Very sad. found one in jan. for 2900. love it doubt i'll ever sell it.

My passenger side rocker panel has some rust which will be replaced soon, I've found a guy that will do the job. Look behind those plastic rocker panel covers - they hide rust!!

The rust on the hatch is inside the door. My 5.9 has the same problem, paint over it with touchup paint and it comes back. The problem is the rear sprayer nozzle on the top of the hatch. You have to pull it off and seal it up with RTV or something, because the old rubber seal on it is cracked from time and is letting rain water inside.

@1ownjoo2 Really? THAT's the cause? I'd never figure that out... but it makes sense, my hatch hasn't got a single paint scratch or dents so the rust has to come from the inside. Well that hatch is long gone.. it looks great now though with my fix, but ill replace it when it rots out completely. Then, I'll do the RTV seal around the sprayer!

Yea for me its not really that bad. Lift the hatch up and you really have to look for the rust, its like peeking out in 2 spots that are maybe half an inch long. I imagine is probably worse inside tho, But its nowhere near bad enough to replace the hatch. Maybe if it starts to show through but i doubt that would happen any time soon.
Other spots you gatta be carefull off are the plastic rockers by the doors that plastic cladding down there can hide a lot of rust

had a 5.2L 4" lift/33" and decided i want more ( 6" on 35" tires) so if i was to spend that much it would be on the king aka 5.9L. i loved my 5.2 it was my baby, but it didnt take long for me to fall in love with my new 5.9 even stock it was the new love of my life. what a waste of a special truck, i understand its for the environment but this isnt a 98 4runner or blazer its the 5.9 15k ever made grand. if i ever find this guy ill pour that bottle down his throat and make him run till he dies.

I feel like I just watched a snuff video where they killed someone. This is awful. I took my 5.9 out yesterday & just punched it for a second in the parking lot and drifted for a couple seconds on the 31 inch tires in a 4wd burnout. Then I quickly left the dairy queen before I got in trouble. Took off down the road and it still just feels so good to me. Better than my 04 Overland. To kill one of these is a tragedy! So sad.

If it costs $13k every 5 years to pay the gas for a 5.9 at current gas prices, then that means for a hybrid to pay itself off, it would take 10 years. If you spent 36k with gas and a new price tag paying that off after 5 years. Over 13k in gas after 5 years, 5x2 =26k, so actually you would have to own a hybrid for 14 years to equal owning a 14mpg V8 lol

Most people turned in Jeeps because of the MPG they get better mpg vehicles and new ones.. If they cant afford the gas then what makes em think they can afford a car payment AND gas ? Lets factor in a 20-30k Hybrid that gets 30-40mpg av, 1k miles a month $400-600 car payment.. After 5 years thats $30k, now gas $99 a month, 5 years thats $36k totall. A 5.9 getting 13-14mpg av after 5 years on premium that is $13k after 5 years. Its cheaper to own a gas guzzler then a hybrid.

My friend works at a dealerships and they had the entire parking lot filled with old Jeeps.... Its even hard to find a normal 5.2 or 4.0 thats in good condition these days... Sad thing is, the amount of gas this thing uses is nothing compared to how much emissions it takes to make a new vheicle.. Not only that but Hybrid cars for example the batterys dont hold a charge after about 80-120k miles.. Then you need to spend $3-7k to replace them... went to the junkyard yesterday for a filler neck, mine was rusted. Isaw 2 of these 5.9s gutted sitting side by side, one silver and one black. not a speck of rust on either one. doesnt seem fair all these nice clean jeeps in better shape than what i have being scrapped. I wouldnt be suprised if a couple hundred of these 5.9jeeps across the country bit the dust during this program.

even if it was burning oil they could have pulled out the motor rebuilt it and stroked it to 6.7l. they have kits. it may not have been burning oil, it may just have been running rich from sitting for a while, its battery was dead.and i bet having water and glue in the crankcase rather than oil doesnt help much.Very sad. found one in jan. for 2900. love it doubt i'll ever sell it.
