Pheonix is a very long range weapon and very expensive. Assuming they used medium distance Sparrows at this range for first shot. As distance closed up it appears they switched to the short-range Sidewinder. No need to waste a Pheonix. Just assuming. I am not privy to the details of this engagement.

It was intended to knock down Tu-22's and Tu-95's. Fleet requirements for CAP were the typical loadout of AIM-7 Sparrows and AIM-9 Sidewinders.

So for these kinds of missions they were rarely carried. These days the AMRAAM fill the role the Phoenix filled fairly well in a package smaller than the Sparrow. (Heck, the F-16 can carry AMRAAMs on the wingtips.)

How would the United States react if a Libyian carrier were operating off the Atlantic coast and had launched fighters to patrol even remotely near the internationally recognized territorial waters and air space, or, as a reverse situation, remotely near the extended claims of territorial waters and air space? At the end of the video you can hear them confirming 'Two good chutes', which means the libyan pilots managed to eject, and were probably picked up by their own forces. As to aggressors, the MiGs were the aggressors here. They continually moved in such a way that appeared to be targetting the Tomcats with their weapons, or wanting to engage. It's like coming across someone in the woods who's pointing his gun at you.

@RingSight91 1st each pilot got a kill, 1 fired 2 aim-7s the other got a aim-9. The one who got the aim-9 was the one who couldnt get tone and the rio did a WSC and found all systems working. When he did the pilot realized what happened and turned the vol back up. 2nd when you listen to the audio recording that was released there is a 17 sec portion missing. Also its the only portion of the hud tape missing. Im not dogging the guy he still got a kill in BFM!

Gulf of Sidra incident, August 19, 1981, two Libyan Sukhoi Su-22 Fitter attack aircraft were shot down by two American F-14 Tomcats off of the Libyan coast.
I remember watching a documentary, in which this was recorded as well. Supposedly to this day, the air crews of the Tomcats are not publicly named due to possible terrorist retribution against them and their families. Brilliant airmanship!

For an IR-active missile you would call Fox-2 and Fox-3 for an Aim-120 slammer or an Aim-54 phoenix.

@RobertoLee09 Not to mention the Phoenix missile was horribly expensive and the full load of six mentioned above couldn't come back to the carrier (too heavy) and would have to be jettisoned. So for these kinds of missions they were rarely carried. These days the AMRAAM fill the role the Phoenix filled fairly well in a package smaller than the Sparrow. (Heck, the F-16 can carry AMRAAMs on the wingtips.)

How would the United States react if a Libyian carrier were operating off the Atlantic coast and had launched fighters to patrol even remotely near the internationally recognized territorial waters and air space, or, as a reverse situation, remotely near the extended claims of territorial waters and air space? The air space the US was in was international waters, even though Gaddafi claimed it Libyan waters. I really don't see any sides being aggressors in the conflict. Country's play these games on a day to day basis to this day. These pilots, on both sides, just took it up a level. Unfortunately two pilots died.

At the end of the video you can hear them confirming 'Two good chutes', which means the libyan pilots managed to eject, and were probably picked up by their own forces. As to aggressors, the MiGs were the aggressors here. They continually moved in such a way that appeared to be targetting the Tomcats with their weapons, or wanting to engage. It's like coming across someone in the woods who's pointing his gun at you.

@RingSight91 1st each pilot got a kill, 1 fired 2 aim-7s the other got a aim-9. The one who got the aim-9 was the one who couldnt get tone and the rio did a WSC and found all systems working. When he did the pilot realized what happened and turned the vol back up. 2nd when you listen to the audio recording that was released there is a 17 sec portion missing. Also its the only portion of the hud tape missing. Im not dogging the guy he still got a kill in BFM!
