  • your camera is rocking side to side probably because its bottom heavy. Lower your gimbal a few turns.

  • So when you take the camera out of the merlin and try puting it back again, do you have to level up everything again?

  • Only if you change the weight of it (by adding or removing a lens or filter). The Merlin has guide lines that help you put it back in the old/same position.

  • Beautiful. :)

  • a dansk videomaker! I love denmark, i stayed in københavn 5 months og jeg felt in love with your country. :)

It's a very nice shot, how is the merlin? I should buy it for my XL2 but because of the weight I need also the vest and it is very expensive. I can't afford the Flyer version from Tiffen unlucky. :(

    Cheers fra Italien!

  • Haha..here u are again! Nice work.

looking into buying anew steadicam system.

  • I noticed the image is rocking quite a bit. Is that intentional? I'm new to video production and still learning. If i buy this thing, would i be able to keep it as steady as possible?

  • This was a first test. Setting up the Merlin and getting to know how to use it properly will take a little time. You can see my second try - called 'Coffee at mom's' - under my videos.

  • @deankumar Its rockin because there is too much weight on the bottom

  • why did you letterbox it? The image is still video-like, very digital. Add some video plugins too it like mAgic bullet suite or whatever. I do not understand classical music...I prefer new age.

  • The Canon HG10 is an HD camcorder (wide screen). Youtube makes this letterboxed, not me.

My newest videos have magic bullet looks added but not this one. The music is by Denmarks best known classical composer, Carl Nielsen. He was born near Odense where I live. I'm not a big fan of classical music - I'm actually a jazz man :) I used the music because I'm quite patriotic... and like this piece :)

  • make sure that your drop time is right. If your drop time is right you should get pretty good results right out of the box. after that its knowing how much pressure to apply to the guide as you are moving to keep frame. But once you have it balanced right and your drop time at 1 second, just fly it till your arms fall off. good luck. cheers

I have a Merlin which I use with a HDR SR7E as well. When I first got the Merlin I was gonna smash it against a wall because I could not stop the swaying.

I happened to put a larger battery on the camera and this really helped alot. They swaying hasn't completely gone but it has reduced with a bit of extra weight on the camera.

I am hoping that the more I practive with the rig the better my shots will be.

I am based in Kildare by the way....where are you in Ireland?

  • I'm only noticing you note now. I'm in Donegal. I have better results with the Merlin, but it is not user friendly for the cost of it. It was hit and miss to get it balanced. I'm using the same camera as you with long life battery and Wide Angle lens. What set up are you working with, i.e. weights, arc dims etc just to compare. The more weight the heavier the overall unit gets.

  • Does anyone share my fustration stated above. I notice that the footage in this video is also swaying???

  • Hi Brian

This was my first test and as far as I know from the people I have spoken to, it is all a matter of practice. Of course, I cannot say if yours is 'broken' in some way. The Merlin works by being slightly bottom heavy. It will swing a litle until you learn how to control it properly. You need to learn how to control the 'guide' and learn how to walk :)

Give it some time - this is a skill. If you dicide to send it back, I believe that B&H will refund the shipping cost.

  • You might want to call Tiffen first. Let them know what you think - they will know what to tell you (I'm sure)...

  • Thanks for your reply. I was thinking of calling tiffen first as it may be that mines is defected on some way. I sooo want it to work as I WANT the steadicam movement in my footage. Does your steadicam sway a bit or alot and has it got better with time? Cheers

  • I've had mine for less than a week, so It's still very new to me. I got it Wednesday, took this footage Thursday - so very new indeed. I don't think mine sways a lot and I'm confident, I will be able to learn the needed skills eventually.

If you do call Tiffen, let me know what they say.

  • will do. Thanks for the advice.

  • I recently purchased a Merlin from B.H. Photo but after many hours and days of trying I cannot get it ballanced in use. I,ve tried everything and all methods, with and without accessories on my Sony HDR SR7 Handycam but it swings and sways in use. I get it balanced but when I move is sways which is unacceptable for such an expensive kit. I'm about to send it back for a refund but I've lost money in delivery, import tax to Ireland and the cost of sending it back. I just has'nt worked for me.

  • It should work, cause I seen some merlin videos on youtube which used evern smaller cameras than yours. Just add more weight to your camcorder like a battery or whatever weight you have at home and test it then.
