Really good videos and thoroughly well thought out. Even though you couldn't get it back to normal'It has helped greatly in more understanding of this problem. From what I have read - Liquid flux kneads to be applied to the underneath of the main pcb, Beneath the GPU and CPU contacts. By re flowing it, and adding new paste you should cure it. Really cool channel.
@52779able No - I tried to reflow mine yesterday. Managed to solve the YLOD now the console won't boot the OS past the welcome screen then it may or may not artefact, corrupt sound etc.. reading further it's a risk when reflowing that the GPU can fry past the point of repair.
@jarrelards123456789 No it isn't. If your console is and old 60 80, 20 or 40 you can replace the thermal paste as a preventative measure. It really is an annoying problem with this generation of consoles.
Hey Mike, my PS3 had a ylod some months ago... After seaching the web i did the ylod fix with the heatgun etc. Then i tried to open my ps3 but it was at the same condition again... I did the ylod fix again and then it returned to life... So give another try! You never know!
@RetroGameTech Thank you for doing this series, it's really helped me a lot with understanding how my consoles work, and I enjoy watching all of your fixing console videos - please keep doing them. ^_^
Ah, unlucky dude. It's good that PS3's still command a good price. It's a shame that the fat models are so unreliable, 'cos I'd love to have a PS3 that plays PS2 games + has the card slots built-in.
Hey Retro, did you replace the thermal paste on the processors? Did you manage to put Rosin Flux underneath the processors? Just curious as to what you tried to bring er back to life.
ps3's have problems to

Nice channel,subbed!
Did you try baking the PS3s motherboard in the oven rather than a heat gun?

Can I use an analogue volt meter to test this?

Don't you have to test the PSU under load?

I did all the same things too. I am going to try using the tester so I know if I have to buy a new power supply.

@52779able PS I read on iFixit that if the fan doesn't spin before the YLOD it's a power supply fault.

Is it possibly to fix ylod without heat gun just only applying thermal paste

I'm actually glad that even though you didn't succeed in fixing the PS3, that you continued to upload the videos showing that.
A lot of people out there wouldn't do that incase there pride get's bashed because they didn't fix it. Good on you!!!

What's your best guess at what's wrong? Did the lack of adequate thermal paste fry the CPU and GPU?
ChipsASensation 7 months ago
Ah well can't win them all, at least you were able to sell it on and the experience gained will be good for next time
