Looks like there's a brass colored pick-up on the treble side of the bridge. Look at all the finish checking (6:04)on that thing. BIG chunk of the top is gone by the sound hole above the pickgaurd.
That's an OLD guitar. Most likely it's around the same vintage as John and George's.
Looks like the original Kluson tuners too. (I doubt it though, probably Grovers)

I have the album TRUST, but I am looking for Rockinghorse Blues, it's done in collaboration with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and another. Anyone have a copy? I heard it long ago - it's a great song!
I don't think it's the strings so much as it is the guitar itself - looks like a Gibson John Lennon model - the pickup may be contributing to the sound, especially if it's original. Gibsons usually have a muddier tone, imo.

Hi, it's not a great sound to be honest.
Often, studio engineers leave a lot to be desired and if I was in a blind listening test, this I'd judge to be a cheap guitar with an 'across the soundhole' pickup.
As for the strings, they look heavy.
At a guess 13 gauge and for the duller sound, go for a standard bronze as opposed to phosphor bronze and play em dead for a while.
It is really to bad that there are not any more brilliant musicians like Elvis, I mean the "it" musicians now are the Jonas Brothers, and rappers like 50 cent. It is truly sad.
I saw Elvis sing this song live at the "Irish National Stadium" in 1985... my first rock concert ever, and I did not really know who Elvis was.
He opened his encore with this song. As he sang, shouts from the otherwise silent crowd of Dubliners arose, "Sing a fucking real song, man! Where's "Pump it Up?"
Unreal. This is one of his best. No questions. Beautiful. And I had the good fortune to see it from row 3 as sweat dripped from his face.
Musicians and artists connotate analytic words into meaningless synthetic concepts (semantic confusion) and denotate meaningful concepts into meaningless words (pragmatic confusion).
What you have here is a 'human' making human 'sounds' that other humans can connect with...that is the beauty of it. It's irrelevant what vocal range he has or how many chords he can play on a guitar...it's not American f****** Idol, which is a load of crap.

You just watched a mediocre guitarist with a voice with an extremely limited range. But he does have being one of the best song writers of the last 50 years going for him.
With 37 CD's under his belt I hope to be alive for the 50th anniversary CD.
I disagree. What you are watching is one of the most prolific, accomplished musicians that has ever lived. Elvis has written, recorded, covered and performed with many of the greatest musicians that have ever picked up an instrument or a microphone. A talk show may not be the best venue for him to demonstrate his talents, but I love the grittiness and soulfulness of this performance. Long live Elvis Costello.
This acoustic version is just awesome. The guitar sounds great, and Elvis voice is so incredible. I prefer it to the piano version, c'est vraiment un grand !
Thanks for the video! Did you know that Squeeze, from the same genre of music, is going to be touring North America in the Summer of 2007 and the UK later in the year? Tickets for the North American dates are available on the Ticketmaster website.
That's the sign of a great artist...being able to pull it off like that in front of a live studio audience with some unprepared material. Doesn't that guitar sound great (especially for "Rocking horse road"?)
What a tool... all that voice and no sense to stick to the no format format. The angels gonna' wear his red shoes.

1985? The song was on Brutal Youth, which came out somewhere in the early '90s.
