Our Maxi Pionus does the same thing with pillows! I had bought my mom a pillow for christmas without really thinking about it when my mom opened it all hell broke loose. About a week later she got to the pillow and attacked it. :P
I love how she gets all scared of the rug then hangs off upside down to get closer to it ^^ My parrot does that when things scare / confuse him too, he goes all fluffy but then he comes closer to look at it.. -.-
I enjoy watching Einstein's videos a lot!! She is so cute, funny and amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing them. May I ask you something? How do you know if these "big parrots" are male or female? I have one and we have always thought it's a "girl" but we are not sure of that. I hope you can give me some advice. Thank you =)
@magaliveangel You will need to go to an Avian Vet and get a DNA test. They will draw some blood to do the test. Search "Parrot DNA sexing" for more info.
I embedded one of your videos on my pet sitting website and every morning I enjoy picking a new Einstein video out to watch. She is such a charming and funny creature, and it just makes me feel happy inside when I start my day watching her antics. She must be such a wonderful friend to you. Thank you for sharing her here.
@IWatchYourPets So glad you enjoy Einstein! There will soon be a sequel to this video. Titled, "Einstein gets even with the kitchen rug!" Hope to upload it soon! (Sure wish there was a Bird Pet sitting service where we live!)
POOR baby!!! MY DYH amazon Hates it when i wear a baseball hat.. She dosent freak like this poor baby but she gets pissed off.... She also dosent like it when i get my hAIR cut short even though it looks good and she nips my ear good if she dosent approve...Kinda like a wife Or GF........ makes you wonder...
If you guys evewr decided to move out you would have to sedate him to get the rug in the moving truck lol I love him My bird does the same thing if i move the rug really quickly my motion sickness and I like his noise its tough just move the rug and put him on the counter if there was like an intruder I will teach my bird to do that :D
I think Einstein was covered with something, like a blanket or cloth at a young age in order to be captured or maybe just accidently and still remembers this scary ordeal. I wonder if she is covered at night?
Hah... So thats y my African grey doesn't like the new perch I put in her cage;she is mortified by the site of her cage changing, she was neglected by her previous owners and got use to the cage... Oh and this is what I think Einstein was thinking... PUT THAT F***ING THING DOWN!!! GOD KNOWS WHAT THE H**** IS UNDER THAT THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I work with Autistic children, some of them, even going a different route home is a terrifying thing to them, do you suppose that this could be similar? The fact Einstein does not enjoy her surroundings to be changed?
@VinnyG253 It's true, Einstein doesn't like her surrounding to change! Parrots get very used to things being a certain way. However, we have had this rug forever and she has always reacted this way. In fact when I buy a replacement I have to buy the same kind. I have 2 in the closet to use in the future. And I am always shopping for ones that look like this one!
It is funny how animals will be scared of random things. My kitty is scared of marching for some reason. It doesn't even have to be loud or threatening... if you just pick your knees up really high and walk in a rhythmic manner she totally flips out.
@Dummy288 I just don't know why she does this. We have removed the rug when she isn't there and when she returns she constantly looks at the floor, as if to say, "Where is the rug?". The rug just needs to be there. (For her and me.) I have 2 replacements for when this one gets thrown out.
Even like that she's still cute...:P..I love her...Congrat to you guys for taking such good care fr her....i saw that she has toys in many places of your house...good for you..i've got a little bird of my onw..but it was a present and it was not a baby..so is harder...it's been several months and he's just getting use with me touching and picking him up...
I know myGerman Shephard didn't like foil (the noise I guess)--but he knew which drawer we had it in....but during the recent weeks we used to keep it in a spot so he didn't see it...but he always remembered and every time you opened the drawer..the poor things ears would go back, tail in between his legs and he'd go running off into a corner somewhere...
It was the strangest thing when I experienced it but he calms down if he hears it closes a second time and a pet! Lol!
My grey hates anything brown and tubular. She screams at paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, and thick rolled-up paper we use for her cage. If its flat she is fine.
Parrots have a completely different view of the world. They see and hear things humans don't. What human and parrot see together is one thing to the human and something else to the parrot. My parot, Sunshine, is able to see the true nature of people. I can do that too, but she's able to do it in seconds. It takes me hours of concentration to do the same. That's why I love parrots. They're like us but different as well.
it's funny how some animals get so scared of suck random things. like my friend's dog who is absolutely TERRIFIED of books. especially when you flip all the pages at once. he start shaking and runs away
@danimeman That's exactly what I was thinking, something out of Jurassic Park. Wow, your bird is very overly-dramatic. My bird would've just flown away. No noises for a minute and a half. Just a simple fly. Your bird just stayed there and screamed for an excessive amount of time...geez...It must get fairly annoying...
@janelpopp .... all greys are drama queens... chuckle. they're like the woody allens of parrots because of their intelligence. and they see more colors and better visual acuity than we do, so god only knows what einstein was seeing. mine is a drama queen about black purses, black boxes... and he loves blondes ( which i am not, but then again, i have raspberries and corn, and blondes don't)

I had a bird like this..it yelled help a lot. not sure why. heard it was cuz its last owners were killed and the bird picked up them yelling. it was sad.
It can mean a couple of things. I'm bigger than you think, so you better stay away, or as a greeting. Einstein does it a lot when she greets us or we come into the room. For her it is not threatening... more of a non-verbal "Howdy!"
oh ok cos i think iv seen my parrot use this in both ways, not so much as threatening any more just when we first got her, now like you say she does it when i approach her as if she cant be botherd to talk an just stares at me for abit lol mainly watching or listining to what im sayin lol
@4zebird when mine is on the hallway floor and i come out of a room, his hackles also rise and one gets the sense that he's wondering if i see him down there or if he's unsafe under my feet. in falconry, raising their feathers is called "rousing." birds can also "rouse up" when sick.
@initman01 it can be part of a greeting with a familiar person, or body language for feeling alarmed, and they also fluff up when they don't feel very good. you just have to know your parrot well enough to read them in their own language
@SimplyRisque WTF? You were late when they were passing out common sense weren't you? If the bird was from Africa it'd be very difficult to deal with since it'd be "W-I-L-D" and second birds don't become afraid of blankets if they're picked up by them..it's how the vets do it. They use towels or small blankets. We play with both our greys like that every day, we wrap them in blankets..and macaws and caiques love blankets and hiding in them.
@PinkyWontWork Uh, no, I have had birds that came over from Africa that have been tamed and certain things make them freak out. Birds can have bad experiences with things and be afraid of them for the rest of their lives, just like humans. So before you try to look all bad ass, consider that. So cool with the little 'common sense' line, where did you find an insult generator with that one?

Did your Grey come from Africa? Maybe if she did, she was captured with a blanket or something and that's why she's deeply afraid of that.

@SimplyRisque Right on...I hurt your feelings with that one huh? Cool, it shouldn't be THAT easy.
