@231coolas I have caught and released TONS of these in my life and only one actually squirted blood from its eyes. This one looked different than the others i had caught. The eyes seemed to swell up for awhile then it shot out about two feet from each eye. So it does indeed happen but may depend on the breed or species.
Horned toads will die without a diet of ants. The particular ants in their area. If you are still near where he was caught. Then let him go. I have only been able to keep desert horned lizards in AZ one time. When I have a red ant pile in my yard to feed them from. : )
@BoyCary thats accually false. The species that need ant to survive is the thorny devil (People often get it mixed up with the horned toads for some reason). they have successfully kept and bred horned toads in the UK with a diet of crickets, meal worms etc.
Also they don't squirt blood often and it is often very hard to get them to squirt blood. They do it when they feel REALLY threatened.
I've never seen a horned lizard wag it's tail like that, very weird! Hope he was a successful pet, of all the horned lizard species, that one is the least dependent on harvester ants, although they still eat a lot of ants and beetles.
And to clear up the incorrect statements about blood squirting, this species can, but probably won't. It's a much more common behavior in other horned lizard species. Even those rarely use this defense on people though.
@moneyishappiness read some more, thorny devils are from down under and are compeatly spereate creatures from horny toads/horny lizzards whlie simular in nature this is a product of evoultion with in the americas. zoologist need to hit the books son or fess up to 12 year old nature
truth be told they are all albe to squirt blood when agrovated but due to the long process of makeing blood they dont do it unless they feel 100% threationed and you should be careful tring to have horned lizzards as pets as most in america are endangered species and there for illegial with out perments and must be bread in captivity or have even more perments to get them from the wild.
There are many varieties of horned lizards, and though I don't know about this particular kind, there are several that do shoot blood. [The regal horned lizard is one, I believe.]
I've never heard of a Horned Lizard taking mealworms. Only taking ants and small crickets. There's close to zero nutrition in mealworms unless they're gutloaded with food of their own. Kindof a weird diet for a Horned lizard if you ask me, but he seems a mid-way weight in this video, which is okay I guess. Most petstore sales have very thin specimens.
I love these lizards! ^_^
