I know I should be offended by what Roger says, but I think I would find it quite flattering, really.
Saying something like that isnt the problem. Its treating a woman like a piece of ass at all times where the problem starts. And Roger has definetly treated Joan as more than that.
"You are the finest piece of ass I ever had, and I am so glad I got to roam those hillsides." -the last thing my ex boyfriend of four years said to me before he got on a plane to move back home. <3
"Thank you,my love, for granting me the privilege,of welcoming me into the wonder and majesty of something even more exciting and profound than the celestial gardens of heaven it self;your own exquisite rhapsody of beauty, sensuality and love.I will forever dream, remember and pursue each and every second of each moment of that unquestionable rare occasion;for the remainder of my life, with dreams that someday;that God may grant me the pleasure to feel that way again.
It is sooo sad that Roger had to "make light of it" and classify Joan [to her face!] as a "piece of ass," instead of venturing that he loves her. What a lot of heartache that would have saved them both in the next year or so ... but then, maybe not, knowing Roger ....
Sad thing is, I'm not so sure that he thinks he's making light of the situation. Considering it's Roger, that might very well be the deepest, most sincere compliment he can think of.
@goldendawn7 Yeah, I think she knows how badly Roger speaks of sensitive matters. He's a former Navy man after all, and they are not renowned for their sensitivity of phrasing or attitude!
@katmatally If you knew how to listen to his words from behind your radar for sexist remarks, you'd find a most profound declaration of love. There's nothing light in Roger's words here; to tell her that he doesn't care who finds out about their affair, that he isn't ashamed of it, is a sign of deep and sincere affection and is just what Joan needed to hear.
@aqua1993 For the other woman, if she has the ability to embrace deeper emotions, it's always important to hear the lover sincerely say that he's/she's not ashamed of what they have. If recognizing this is the most you can expect from Roger, then you can expect a great deal from him.
@aqua1993 Other assets? What does that even mean in the context of this moment between these two? What would you have him say, that "baby, I really respect your intelligence and I'm glad you have shared that refine world with me". I don't know about you, but I would find that condescending. And if you mean by "not acknowledging her other assets" that he's obejctifying her, it just isn't so. Because of what Roger said it's very clear that he knows he's looking in the eyes of a strong woman.
@EngelbertEdelholz He IS objectifying her. How about this: How would you like it if some mofo who abandoned you and her told YOUR mom that she was, "The Finest Piece of Ass I Ever Had"? People's perceptions change when their own femail relatives get thrown into the mix, stupid mofo. Or, how about some gay man tells your ass that??? I don't think you'd like that dismissal of your humanity, which is what that bytch ass crakkka's Roger's comment to that lady is!
@HappyHooker83 I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, but it seems like you're implying that I'm a man. Which I'm not, I'm a woman. And any woman who knows where she stands in relation to the man she's fucking can take and even appreciate what Roger said to Joan here; it depends on the nature of the relationship.
@EngelbertEdelholz Hello, I know this conversation is old, just stumbled upon it and found it interesting so I'd like to continue the discourse. Anyways, what I'm saying is that there are plenty of things that Roger could have said that would have shown Joan that he cared deeply for her and that truly represented what he felt for her. We know what he chose. I'm not arguing that by choosing to show his affection through her ass that he is objectifying her.
@EngelbertEdelholz I'm merely saying that it wasn't "just what she needed to hear" as there are many other things he could have said that demonstrated love (albeit with different results). But by mentioning only her ass, he does appear to ignore her other assets (picking any other asset would cause the others to be ignored) even though he might deeply respect them. This apparent ignorance could, eventually, be perceived by Joan as true ignorance in which case Joan might have doubts about Roger.
@aqua1993 i think you're looking at the term "piece of ass" much too literally. It's meant to say that the individual in general is sexually appealing/satisfying, not just focusing on the posterior.
@aqua1993 I think I said it once already, but I'm gonna say it again: should Roger have chosen his words any differently, they would have become condescending considering his character and the nature of the relationship between him and Joan. I don't understand why you think it's necessary for Joan to hear that she's an intelligent, independent woman when they both know it anyway - to choose to compliment her sensuality shows that even knowing they're doing wrong they're not afraid of each other.
I know I should be offended by what Roger says, but I think I would find it quite flattering, really.

I say that line, they are pulling my remains out of a shallow grave in New Jersey.

Only Roger Sterling could pull that line off.

@EngelbertEdelholz Yes, but my point is that Roger, while i agree is recognizing that he deeply cares for Joan, isn't acknowledging her other assets.
