Haha what the F is this guy talking about, "good player". Safin's one of the most talented men to ever hold a tennis racket, how many guys of his size can you name who've had as successful of a career as his? None. And all of this despite having a tonne of injuries during his best years.
@ibanezatleti comparing Krajicek to Safin is preposterous. The guy reached one slam final. Ivanisevic was a very good player but his achievements don't match up to Safins either and both spent an equal amount of time with injuries. Safin was a baseliner, a 194cm baseliner. How was he supposed to do anything on fast grass at Wimbledon, he couldn't move well enough, neither did he care if he done well there. His opinion was that of Rios'. He done well later because the grass had slowed down.
@SoooBlue you said how many guys of his size were as successful as him, goran is a Wimbledon chamion and a three- time runner-up . We can't blame the courts for being slowed , but we Can blame Safin for not being consistent that time . Also Safin was known as a fast court player , he had good results at the indoors courts . He just got outplayed almost every time he lost @ Wimbledon exept in 2005 when he was injured .
@SoooBlue @SoooBlue What about Goran and krajicek who were pretty much bigger than Safin . Not to forget that both of them hold a Wimbledon title , which was hard as hill for Safin to do . Safin with all respect to him ,he couldn't do a shit in his prime at Wimbledon . The funny thing is that he hoped for a QFat his his peak then he reached the semis at the end of his career.
How can u say that Roger was dethroned? He just started to shine back then. Finally he gets 16 slams and still counting. Yeah, if now Safin can beat Federer, we can say that he dethroned the champ. How many GSs did Safin Win? 0! So use better language nect time
@michaeljackson5able The title is technically correct. Federer was the defending champion, safin beat him an dthus dethroned him from the AO title...it is irrelevant whether Federer won all of these titles afterwards...the title is referring to this specific AO championship.
He won 2 Slams not only he beat Federer here (and Hewitt in the final) but he also smacked Sampras in the US Open final back in 2000. Safin at his best could beat anybody.
@sxchighflyer 1. Federer, 2. Roddick, 3. Hewitt, 4. Safin. Ferrero was seeded 31st that year, but I can understand why you would think that, the guy was there or thereabouts 2000-2004, until injury and illness brought him down.
I always loved to see the "best player of the history" as many said lost a match on his knees. God Lord, he won all that he won, but he will die knowing that he´s Rafa´s son. Also, he do not have a gold medal and a Davis Cup. Whatta shame.
Safin was so awesome when he actually decided to care and try, and keep a cool head. It seemed like alot of the time, he was only playing for a means to an end, i.e. money. When he played the Heineken Open in Auckland, he was extremely hungover in the final. When he gave his speech, he pointed to his box and gave a shoutout to a bunch of groupie girls that he'd met at clubs the night before. lol
@poopseks That's some of the biggest tripe I've ever heard. Safin was "awesome" when he wasn't dogged with injury, ignorant people like you obviously have no idea. Safin never played for money, why would he play for an appearance fee when he's raking in the cash from endorsements, interviews etc? Safin has never played Auckland,so god knows what you're talking about there. You seem to be referring to the AO02 final in MELBOURNE. He was far from hungover, he nearly lost to Haas due to poor fitness
at 3:58 ish when Safin scrambles to Federer's drop shot volley and lobs it over Roger, it was actually match point Federer. I always thought that was the coolest point I've ever seen, it was such a clutch lob
@patjoz fed nadal at aus open wasnt a very good match. Federer served at 40%.... not top draw at all, exciting yet, I would put fed nadal Rome masters final ahead of it (5hours) , 2007 wimbledon final, gasquet vs gonzalez at Australian open 2009, verdasco vs nadal 2009 Aus open, djokovic vs nadal 2009 madrid semi (clay) . Definitely agree with this one being up in the top 3 though!
In top form, Safin is better than Federer but he threw it all away and said it was enough. To me, Safin told the world I can be the best when I want to and he proved that he was right with this tournament especially but then Safin said "I told you so" and just quit caring because he settled for what he had.
two of the most gifted players against eachother gives the best tennis possible. shame that safin didnt have the mental strenght that fed has but hey why blame him? he prolly doesnt give a shit and enjoyed life. when he go out he spent on average 2000$ a night.. haha and believe me he fucks whatever he wants.
Safin hit the ball so hard Federer couldn't get to the ball enough to play his superior game. The only way Federer could ever get beaten in those days.
two men at the height of their game. Federer at 23 and Safin at 24 were in the shape of their life, Federer being a defending champion at all grand slams save roland garros that year, and Safin simply having some stroke of genius at the time. I salute their strength of character for treating their audience on 5 thrilling sets of amazing tennis.

@sleong Actually you can't just say that he would've pwned Lleyton Hewitt considering that Lleyton was seeded higher than Marat in the AO and the fact that one match doesn't mean everything.
Wow, "I put some slow motion on some points". Pathetic. Same thing for the music. Just leave the real sounds. It's tennis not a pyjama party where you want us to hear your lame music
safin hit the ball out when federer had matchpoint but there was no call, so federer was confused and just played the ball back and safin hit a winner.
camera showed that safin's ball was out. .. really bad that there was nothing like a hawkeye in 2005 ..
but things like that happen and safin played so extremely good. amazing match !
I'm not sure if this is correct- there was only one match point that federer had against marat. in that point, federer hit a drop volley (sort of) and marat hit a volley lob which roger then hit into the net with his "tweener" attempt. that was as close as federer came to winning the match. You are correct that marat hit a backhand down the line that was called in but was actually out- however that happens a lot to both players throughout a match.
I think this was the best match ever imo. I remember watching it.
Haha i remember Hewitt talking like he had a chance before the final, when in reality he didn't. Safin just beat Federer at his peak and Hewitt didn't have a chance from the get go.
2 tennis geniuses. One put in the effort of practicing and becoming the greatest ever, the other decided to live life and settle with being just a "good" player.
@PatriotBrady So a world number 1 and multiple slam champion despite being dogged with injury only results to being a good player? So therefore there has been no more than 24 'good' players.
Federer's just recently been annointed the GOAT. It's now official and completely legit. And where is Safin now? A shadow of a shadow of his former self.
Federer only had 4 losses in that year alright, but he didn't play in every single tournament. He played in 5 out of 9 atp masters series, he didn't play in Basel, and in some other tournaments.
People make it seem like he played all the tournaments and only lost 4 gamtches, but it wasn't like that. Amazing season though.
yes but dont forget that federer won pretty much everything he competed in. he played like 90 matches that year, the most of everyone i believe. dont know if he only played 5 out of 9 master series though
The match-point save starting at 3:50 is just awesome... what a run to the ball, catches it only a couple inches from a double bounce to execute a perfect lob; had he done anything else, like trying a pass, it probably would have been over; that one shot extended the match for over another hour for his win.
This match was awesome..i remember watching this live..that under the leg shot on match point..I wished that went in. But credit to Safin..he had to play his best and not self destruct mentally to win over Roger...plus he smashed Hewitt in the final.
If federer didnt go for that under the leg shot and just hit a regular forehand he would of won the entire thing. Credit to safin tho he played amazingly
Another personal favorite of mine in the last decade was the 2001 Ivanisevic vs Rafter Wimbledon final. The atmosphere was like no other in that match. Simply incredible! The Rome 2006 Fed vs Nad and AUS Open 2009 Nad vs Ver were epics as well. All of the matches being 5-setters of course. Too many best of 3 setters to recall.
The greatest match ever played imo. I watched the entire match live and also own it on DVD. Its one of those few matches were both players were playing their absolute best tennis. Not like FED vs NAD Wimbledon 08 were Nadal basically was the only one playing well throughout the match.
If this match hadn`t happened, for sure Federer would have 14 grand slam titles nowadays.
It would have been his 2nd straight Australian Open tite, and he would have gone on to win the next two, thus, making it four consecutive Australian Open titles! Which would have been a modern era record (just with his fictional third consecutive victory, which would have taken place in 2006). He would also be tied with Andre Agassi for most Australian Open titles in the modern era.
Yes this is one of the greatest matches and in terms of tennis ability, Safin is indeed the greatest. If he only could have avoided injuries and improved his mental game, he would have had a ton more grand slams. But no one can ever dispute his talent when you see this match.
Just wish that Marat had been at his best throughout his career. If that had been the case, Federer would have had much fewer Grand Slams. The Federer-Safin rivalry was far more interesting than the Federer-Nadal rivalry.
Was Safin mentally Federer? How many come back, how many impossible situations he turned around... Safin was indeed a little lazier than the average ATP Pro, but he lost countless matches were he became angry at himself. Safin was like the young Federer with a little more experience of the big days.
He remeber seeing him bleeding after smashing his racket - not to the ground, but on his forehead! Those matches Federer won, Safin lost - he couldn't stand playing normal.
I'd perhaps give Safin one or two more, but he couldn't stand the normal days, those where you had to work and try countless times before getting something out of your racket. Federer still plays when he trails two sets behind, even if was outrageously lead; Safin gave up the matches he could have truned all the way around.
Mental thoughness made Federer play over the "over the top level" for 3 years and he still plays top notch tennis - Safin wasn't made as a champion mentally.
Safin was capable of at least 6 slams. Dude i know your a huge Federer fan, but even you have to admit what Safin did here was special; he beat Federer playing his best. I mean, this is the best match that Federer has played in a slam which he came out the loser. I feel for Safin - he was never destined to be a great player - poor focus, angry, injury prone, enjoyed life etc.
That's why Safin's the most talented player I've ever seen. He's not the best, as mentally he's weak, but good lord, if he just commits himself, he can, and did, go toe-to-toe with Federer playing well at his prime, and beat him. He is the only man I have ever seen play Federer in his prime (2004-06), on a non-clay court, when Federer played well, and won. Long live this match, the greatest match ever, even better than Wimbledon final '08.
Federer is gracious in defeat .............. but only when it is defeat to a select few. He is always gracious to Nadal, and always gracious towards Safin, win or lose, as he really respects these two, views them as players of at least equal skill an ability (physically, if not mentally).
Federer should indeed be gracious only to few. Others have yet to earn acknowledgement from federer as a player cause they don't deserve it yet. Not even murray and djoko are at the level of federer and nadal.
Can't believe my eyes !!! Federer is gracious in defeat, sure, and Safin is always very calm, Roddick can't serve and Nadal never scratches his brown eye !
that is just ridiculous music you put on here. It throws anybody off to be hearing this squeaky- puberty boy- punk emo-"nobody love me" stuff. It has nothing to do with tennis.
well I disagree, I think it was a good song choice, so to each his own opinion let99gr. That's why there are different genres of music, because not everyone likes the same thing. Take your ignorance elsewhere.
This was one of the best AO tournaments. I remember staying up watching some crackers. Hewitt-Nalbandian, Safin-Fed, Hewitt-Roddick. '04 was good too with Safin going through those 5 set matches to get to the final.
It's terrible that the last 5 seter in the semis was in '06. Last year was a joke with the last 5 set match being in the 3rd round.
I hope to see some awesome matches over the next few days.
Hopefully we'll see a 5er with del Potro and Fed tonight.
lol, look at Safin's reaction to beating federer in a major final. He just walks up to the net and kinda hunches over over it, waiting for fed to come shake his hand. It just shows his style. Most plays would be jumping up and down, screaming, but Safin... hmm.
Actually he didn't really come out of "nowhere" at the Australian Open 2005. He was ranked number 4 in the world at the time of this video. Andy Roddick was 2, Hewitt was 3, and of course we know who number 1 was.
best match ever

Great video, great choice with the music. Although you didn't need to show Roger's winners in slow motion.

The best moment of Safin's career was right here in this match.
sleong 2 years ago 28
Federer was at his best that year, but Safin was simply better!!!
azuki1982 2 years ago 4
@sleong and the most important shot of his career was a lob, ironic for the big slugger

Federer's just recently been annointed the GOAT. It's now official and completely legit. And where is Safin now? A shadow of a shadow of his former self.

incredible safin
m3v0t 2 years ago
Federer only had 4 losses in that year alright, but he didn't play in every single tournament. He played in 5 out of 9 atp masters series, he didn't play in Basel, and in some other tournaments.
People make it seem like he played all the tournaments and only lost 4 gamtches, but it wasn't like that. Amazing season though.
Grieverer 2 years ago
yes but dont forget that federer won pretty much everything he competed in. he played like 90 matches that year, the most of everyone i believe. dont know if he only played 5 out of 9 master series though
rolf85 2 years ago
Well... I believe that if Safin would be so stable in his power as Fed, my heart would break into two halves.
I so like them both that I'll be always so mad.
Great vid, dude. And great music, thanks
NewLeaX1 2 years ago
Oh I remember this great match.
Normally I am a hardcore Fed's fan though I am Russian.
But this time I was only Safin's.
They both played so great that I'll never forget this.
NewLeaX1 2 years ago 2
The match-point save starting at 3:50 is just awesome... what a run to the ball, catches it only a couple inches from a double bounce to execute a perfect lob; had he done anything else, like trying a pass, it probably would have been over; that one shot extended the match for over another hour for his win.
tjn0110 2 years ago
This match was awesome..i remember watching this live..that under the leg shot on match point..I wished that went in. But credit to Safin..he had to play his best and not self destruct mentally to win over Roger...plus he smashed Hewitt in the final.
robinho1979 2 years ago 2
If federer didnt go for that under the leg shot and just hit a regular forehand he would of won the entire thing. Credit to safin tho he played amazingly

Another personal favorite of mine in the last decade was the 2001 Ivanisevic vs Rafter Wimbledon final. The atmosphere was like no other in that match. Simply incredible! The Rome 2006 Fed vs Nad and AUS Open 2009 Nad vs Ver were epics as well. All of the matches being 5-setters of course. Too many best of 3 setters to recall.
EnixRPG 2 years ago
The greatest match ever played imo. I watched the entire match live and also own it on DVD. Its one of those few matches were both players were playing their absolute best tennis. Not like FED vs NAD Wimbledon 08 were Nadal basically was the only one playing well throughout the match.
EnixRPG 2 years ago 4
You are absolutely spot on there. Definitely the best match. I also own it on DVD.

Wish there were more matches as good as this one. Last match that was this good was the Nadal vs. Federer faceoff.
DarkDisaster45 2 years ago
If this match hadn`t happened, for sure Federer would have 14 grand slam titles nowadays.
It would have been his 2nd straight Australian Open tite, and he would have gone on to win the next two, thus, making it four consecutive Australian Open titles! Which would have been a modern era record (just with his fictional third consecutive victory, which would have taken place in 2006). He would also be tied with Andre Agassi for most Australian Open titles in the modern era.
Pity he didn`t win.

urranuss 3 years ago
Yes this is one of the greatest matches and in terms of tennis ability, Safin is indeed the greatest. If he only could have avoided injuries and improved his mental game, he would have had a ton more grand slams. But no one can ever dispute his talent when you see this match.
StevieNicksfann 3 years ago
yes. Injuries and he looses his cool very easily. But i think as far as potential he had no limits. Go safin!
tomassocannavaro 3 years ago
Just wish that Marat had been at his best throughout his career. If that had been the case, Federer would have had much fewer Grand Slams. The Federer-Safin rivalry was far more interesting than the Federer-Nadal rivalry.
mrbobevans 1 year ago 2
@mrbobevans
GueorguiJoukov 1 year ago
@GueorguiJoukov That wasn't Safin smashing his forehead, that was Youzhny. C'mon dude.
davd1986 1 year ago
@mrbobevans
GueorguiJoukov 1 year ago
Safin was capable of at least 6 slams. Dude i know your a huge Federer fan, but even you have to admit what Safin did here was special; he beat Federer playing his best. I mean, this is the best match that Federer has played in a slam which he came out the loser. I feel for Safin - he was never destined to be a great player - poor focus, angry, injury prone, enjoyed life etc.

lnyleang 3 years ago 3
Now you have to add Nadal v. Verdasco, Australian Open 2009...probably #1...I wish it was a final instead of a semi.
JohnnyKenaya 3 years ago 3
That's why Safin's the most talented player I've ever seen. He's not the best, as mentally he's weak, but good lord, if he just commits himself, he can, and did, go toe-to-toe with Federer playing well at his prime, and beat him. He is the only man I have ever seen play Federer in his prime (2004-06), on a non-clay court, when Federer played well, and won. Long live this match, the greatest match ever, even better than Wimbledon final '08.
dmbull22 3 years ago 6
Very Very true I have the same opinion. I love the Fed though look how gracious he was in defeat.
tull06 3 years ago 3
Federer is gracious in defeat .............. but only when it is defeat to a select few. He is always gracious to Nadal, and always gracious towards Safin, win or lose, as he really respects these two, views them as players of at least equal skill an ability (physically, if not mentally).
dmbull22 3 years ago 5
Federer should indeed be gracious only to few. Others have yet to earn acknowledgement from federer as a player cause they don't deserve it yet. Not even murray and djoko are at the level of federer and nadal.
Nerderline 3 years ago
Can't believe my eyes !!! Federer is gracious in defeat, sure, and Safin is always very calm, Roddick can't serve and Nadal never scratches his brown eye !
minastronasse 3 years ago
that is just ridiculous music you put on here. It throws anybody off to be hearing this squeaky- puberty boy- punk emo-"nobody love me" stuff. It has nothing to do with tennis.
let99gr 3 years ago
well I disagree, I think it was a good song choice, so to each his own opinion let99gr. That's why there are different genres of music, because not everyone likes the same thing. Take your ignorance elsewhere.
smx007 3 years ago 3
