I believe the Santees and many other tribes are from the Mound Builders. The MB are the ones who killed Hernandaz Desoto. Desoto left behind small pox which pretty much wiped out the MB. Their only survivel was to dispurse into the four directions never to return.

Yes, the culture is simlar, except there were no written books. The knowledge was passed down through storytelling and the memories stored in their genes/DNA. The main difference is the majority of Native Americans believed in reincarnation at the time of Columbus' arrival. The circle or nature's cycle was the center of this belief. A buffalo, eagle, or other animals/birds were their brothers in the spiritual sense. The only afterlife was to be born again as either another human or animal.
